A mushy or sticky button may be caused by residue around the button, debris inside the device, or a worn contact—but a button that feels normal and simply does not register can point to a different problem. Start by powering the device off, checking its manufacturer’s cleaning and repair instructions, and trying only a suitable external clean. Open it only when the maker supports user repair and you have the correct model-specific guide and tools.
First, work out what kind of button problem you have
Notice whether the button is physically hard to press, slow to spring back, or sticky to the touch—or whether it moves normally but the device misses the input. Note which buttons are affected and whether the problem followed a spill. These clues can help narrow the cause, but they are not a definitive test: dirt, sticky liquid, worn contacts, or a fault elsewhere in the electronics can produce overlapping symptoms.
- Sticks or feels sluggish: residue or debris may be interfering with the button’s movement.
- Moves normally but misses presses: the contact may be contaminated or worn, or the fault may be elsewhere in the device.
- Several buttons fail after a spill: avoid repeated pressing or adding cleaning liquid; follow the maker’s instructions for that device.
Prepare safely before cleaning
Power the device off and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. For Xbox Series X cleaning and repair, Microsoft says to power off and disconnect the console before cleaning, and not to put liquid directly on it. Its instructions also warn that failing to follow repair directions or using incompatible parts or improper tools can cause serious injury, death, or property damage. Those warnings and procedures are specific to the Xbox repair context; they do not establish a universal method for other devices. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X safety and repair instructions include further device-specific guidance.

Solvents and even cleaning methods that are suitable for one mechanism can damage another device’s plastic, rubber, coating, or labels. If the manufacturer does not support opening the device, or you lack the right tools, skill, or model-specific instructions, stop at an external clean or seek repair help rather than improvising.
Try an external clean before opening the device
With the device powered off, remove loose surface debris using a method the manufacturer permits. Keep moisture away from openings and do not flood the area around a button. There is no single externally applied cleaner or technique established as safe for every device, coating, or seal, so check the product’s own instructions before using a damp cloth or any liquid.
For sticky plastic, a solvent can make some materials worse. iFixit recommends testing any proposed treatment on a small, unobtrusive area first and cautions that some solvents may damage plastic. iFixit’s guidance on sticky plastics explains why material compatibility matters.
Choose a cleaning approach that matches the mechanism
Remote controls, rubber-pad controllers, and mechanical keyboards do not use the same button construction. Follow a model-specific repair guide; do not transfer cleaning instructions or solvent concentrations from one type of device to another.

Membrane remote control
If the remote is designed to be opened and you have the correct guide, iFixit’s TV remote procedure describes removing the membrane and gently cleaning sticky residue from its top surface with water. For dust, it describes compressed air or a small vacuum. For contaminated contacts, it uses a cotton swab lightly moistened with rubbing alcohol. Do not rub away the membrane’s conductive paint, and do not clean contacts for keys that already work. See the iFixit TV remote button repair guide for its specific steps.
The guide’s alcohol advice is for selected contacts in that procedure, not a universal solvent recommendation. If cleaning does not restore a key, inspect the conductive contact only if the model’s repair procedure allows access.
Controller with removable rubber pads
In its controller-button guide, iFixit separates the rubber pads from the plastic buttons, cleans the plastic with a soft material, and wipes the rubber pads with a damp soft material. It says to let parts dry completely before reassembly and to align the buttons with their corresponding circuits. Those instructions describe the controller in that guide; another controller may differ. Consult the iFixit controller-button cleaning guide or the instructions for your exact model.

Mechanical keyboard
A mechanical keyboard uses a different mechanism from a membrane remote or controller pad. HP’s guide describes removing keycaps, using compressed air, cleaning, letting components dry fully, and testing the keyboard. Its solvent recommendations apply to its mechanical-keyboard context and should not be assumed safe for other devices. Read HP’s mechanical-keyboard cleaning guidance and check your keyboard maker’s instructions before removing keycaps or applying any cleaner.

There is no concentration that can be prescribed for all button types. Microsoft specifies 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) in its Xbox repair context; HP discusses higher-concentration alcohol for mechanical keyboards; iFixit’s remote guide says rubbing alcohol for selected contacts without establishing a universal concentration. These recommendations are not interchangeable. Follow the maker’s guidance for your exact device, and avoid applying liquid directly to electronics.

Reassemble and test, then decide whether cleaning was enough
- Let every cleaned part dry completely before putting the device back together.
- Use the device-specific guide to return pads, buttons, membranes, and other parts to their correct positions.
- Power the device on and test each affected button, along with nearby buttons that were not cleaned.
- If a remote key still fails, inspect for conductive paint that is worn or missing, but only where the mechanism is accessible and the repair guide supports it. iFixit describes conductive paint, replacement conductive dots, or foil as possible repairs for a worn membrane contact; these are conditional repairs, not a general fix for every button.
- If the contact appears intact or the button still fails after appropriate cleaning, the problem may involve the circuit board or another electronics fault beyond a cleaning procedure. Stop rather than repeatedly cleaning or improvising a repair.
