If Joy-Con motion controls drift or stop responding in Nintendo Switch Sports, first make sure the game is using a supported mode and controller. Then update the console and Joy-Con, reset the controller, check for obstructions, and calibrate motion controls. If calibration fails or the Joy-Con also fails in other motion-enabled software, Nintendo recommends service.

1. Check that your game setup supports motion controls

Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends playing in TV Mode on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2. Controller support also varies by sport, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. If you are using Joy-Con 2, check Nintendo’s sport-specific compatibility details in the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.

A mode or controller mismatch can look like a motion problem, so confirm these basics before calibrating.

2. Update and reset the Joy-Con

  1. Update the console using the latest system update available in System Settings.
  2. Update the controller from System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers.
  3. For a Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, detach it from the console. Press the Joy-Con’s SYNC button once, then press another button to turn it on again.

Nintendo includes system and controller updates, followed by a controller reset, in its Joy-Con motion-control troubleshooting steps.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Joy-Con (L/R) - Neon Red/Neon Blue
  • Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
  • The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
  • Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
  • Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.

3. Check for anything covering the controller

Remove any protective cover temporarily and check that nothing is covering the right Joy-Con’s IR motion camera. Some software uses this camera, so an obstruction can interfere with the function. This is separate from motion-sensor calibration: removing a cover is a check for blocked hardware, not a repair for a damaged sensor.

4. Calibrate the motion controls

  1. Remove the Joy-Con strap and any other accessories.
  2. On the console, open System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Motion Controls.
  3. Hold − or + on the Joy-Con you want to calibrate.
  4. Place the Joy-Con on a flat, stable surface with the control stick facing upward, and wait for calibration to finish.

These are Nintendo’s documented calibration instructions for Nintendo Switch. Keep the controller still on the surface while it calibrates. Calibration can address an inaccurate sensor reference; it cannot be relied on to fix physical damage. See Nintendo’s controller calibration instructions.

5. Test whether the problem is Switch Sports or the controller

Try the Joy-Con in other software that supports motion controls. If motion works there, return to the game setup: check that the sport supports your controller and play mode, and install any available game update. If motion controls fail in other supported software too, or the calibration process fails, Nintendo’s guidance is to have the affected Joy-Con serviced. Use Nintendo’s motion-control troubleshooting page to reach support for your region; service eligibility, cost, and process can vary by location.

6. If the issue happens only with the Soccer Leg Strap

Check that the Joy-Con is attached to the Leg Strap correctly. Joy-Con 2 is not compatible with the Leg Strap, so a Leg-Strap-only problem with that controller is a compatibility issue rather than evidence that calibration is needed. The Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ covers controller and accessory compatibility.

7. Consider wireless interference if connection warnings recur

If you repeatedly see “Your Joy-Con’s connection is unstable,” wireless interference is one possible cause. Nintendo also points to interference as a possibility when characters move incorrectly during controller shaking. These symptoms do not prove interference, so work through the setup, update, and controller checks above before treating it as the diagnosis. See Nintendo’s Switch Sports connection guidance.
