Start by opening mail.yahoo.com in a desktop browser and sending a test message to the same Yahoo address. This separates an account or delivery problem from an app, browser, or mail-client problem:
| What happens | What it means |
|---|---|
| The test message arrives | Yahoo is receiving mail. The problem is probably the Yahoo app, iPhone Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird, or the browser you normally use. |
| The test message does not arrive | Check folders, filters, blocked addresses, mailbox storage, account activity, and the account’s status. |
| Only one person cannot reach you | Verify your full Yahoo address and ask the sender to check for a bounce or failed-delivery notice. |
| Yahoo shows an error | Follow the instructions in that error before changing account settings. |
1. Check Spam, Trash, folders, and search
Missing messages are often being delivered but moved somewhere other than the Inbox. In Yahoo Mail on the web, check these locations manually:
- Spam
- Trash
- Any custom folders
- Archive and other mailbox views
Yahoo does not include messages in Spam or Trash in normal search results, so searching for the sender is not enough. Open Spam and Trash themselves. If a genuine message is in Spam, open it and select Not Spam.

Also check whether the Inbox is sorted in a way that hides recent messages, and search using the sender’s complete address or a distinctive subject phrase.

2. Remove a filter that is moving incoming mail
A Yahoo filter can send mail directly to a folder or Trash without leaving a copy in the Inbox. On desktop New Yahoo Mail:
- Click the More options icon in the left pane.
- Select Settings.
- Open Filters.
- Select a filter that could match the missing message.
- Edit it and click Save, or click the delete icon to remove it.
Review filters from top to bottom. Yahoo processes them in that order, so an earlier matching filter can determine where a message goes. Yahoo permits up to 500 filters, making a quick review worthwhile on older accounts.
Filters do not process old mail retroactively. If you have just corrected one, it affects new messages; it will not automatically return earlier messages to the Inbox.
Spam filtering happens before your personal filters. Also, an IMAP mail app synchronizes folder changes, so a message moved or deleted on another device may disappear from the Inbox everywhere.
3. Check blocked addresses and domains
A blocked sender or domain may prevent expected messages from appearing. In New Yahoo Mail for desktop:
- Click the More options icon.
- Choose Settings.
- Select Security and Privacy.
- Review Blocked addresses.
- Hover over a sender and click the delete icon to unblock it.
Yahoo’s current help documentation says the blocked-address list can contain up to 1,000 addresses. Look for both the individual sender’s address and a blocked domain such as example.com.
4. Check your Reply-to address
A wrong Reply-to address can make replies go to a different mailbox even though your Yahoo address is shown as the recipient or sender. Check it here:

- Open Settings from the More options icon.
- Click Mailboxes.
- Select the relevant mailbox.
- Review the Reply-to address setting.
- Choose the correct address and click Save.
If you add a new reply-to address, Yahoo sends a verification message. The address must be verified before it can be used.
5. Make sure the Yahoo mailbox is not full
A full mailbox cannot receive new messages. Messages sent while the mailbox is full are not stored and cannot be recovered after you free space.
Delete messages with large attachments, then empty Trash. Removing messages without emptying Trash may not reduce the space being used. Check Spam as well if it contains large files.
Storage allowances depend on your Yahoo plan and region. Yahoo’s current U.S. storage documentation lists 20 GB for a standard free Yahoo Mail account. Paid options include larger plans, including 100 GB and 1 TB, while Yahoo Mail Plus includes 200 GB. Do not rely on the old claim that every Yahoo account has 1 TB free.
6. Check whether the mailbox became inactive
Yahoo considers a mailbox inactive after 12 months or more without use. An inactive mailbox stops receiving new messages, and Yahoo says its contents, folders, contacts, and settings are permanently deleted.
Sign in directly at Yahoo Mail to reactivate the account. This may restore the account’s ability to receive mail, but it cannot restore the old mailbox contents or settings. If password-recovery messages are not arriving for an old address, sign in to that Yahoo account first if possible; recovery mail may fail while the mailbox is inactive.
7. Investigate forwarding and suspicious account changes
Automatic forwarding does not normally stop Yahoo from receiving mail, but it can make messages appear to be missing if you are checking another mailbox or if a compromised account has been configured unexpectedly.

Review forwarding on desktop New Yahoo Mail:
- Open Settings.
- Click Mailboxes.
- Under Mailbox list, select the primary mailbox.
- Review Auto-forwarding.
Yahoo currently states that automatic forwarding requires Yahoo Mail Plus and may not be available in every locale.

- Change your Yahoo password immediately.
- Review and remove unfamiliar filters.
- Check blocked addresses, forwarding, and Reply-to settings.
- Re-authenticate or remove unfamiliar third-party mail apps.
- Enable Yahoo’s available account-security features, including two-step verification where appropriate.
8. Recover recently deleted or misplaced mail
If messages were deleted or lost recently, submit Yahoo’s restore request. Yahoo can attempt to recover messages lost or deleted within the previous seven days, although recovery is not guaranteed.
Yahoo’s restore limitations include:
- Restore requests cannot be canceled.
- Messages in Spam and Drafts are not restored.
- Messages from Trash, Sent, Archive, and custom folders are restored to the Inbox.
- Some marketing-list messages may not be recoverable.
Use this after checking the folders and filters rather than as a first step.
9. Fix the Yahoo Mail app
If the test message appears at mail.yahoo.com but not in the Yahoo Mail app, Yahoo is receiving the email. Repair the app instead:

- Update Yahoo Mail from the App Store or Google Play.
- Sign out of the Yahoo Mail app.
- Sign in again.
- Uninstall and reinstall the app if messages still do not appear.
To remove and add an account in the Yahoo Mail app, tap Profile → Manage Accounts → Edit, tap Remove beside the account, and confirm. Then use Profile → Manage Accounts → Add Account.
Re-adding the account is particularly useful when server information or an authentication token is incorrect and the app does not provide a way to edit it.

10. Fix Yahoo Mail synchronization on iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Mail app uses Fetch rather than Push for Yahoo Mail. That means new mail may not appear immediately, and Fetch must be enabled.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts.
- Tap Fetch New Data.
- Choose a fetch interval.
- Make sure Fetch is selected under Yahoo.
On older iOS versions, the path may instead be Settings → Mail → Accounts.
To remove and re-add the account on current iOS, go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts, select Yahoo, tap Delete Account, and confirm Delete from my iPhone. Add it again with Add Account → Yahoo.
11. Repair Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or another mail client
First verify that mail works in the browser. If it does, remove and re-add Yahoo using the client’s built-in Yahoo provider option. This lets the client use Yahoo’s secure sign-in process.
If the client cannot use that sign-in method, create a Yahoo-generated app password rather than entering your normal Yahoo password. This is especially important when two-step verification is enabled. Errors such as Authentication failed or Server password has changed commonly indicate an outdated sign-in method.
For manual IMAP configuration, use these current settings:

Understand POP and IMAP differences
- IMAP: folder changes and deletions synchronize with Yahoo. Deleting a message in the client can move it to Yahoo Trash.
- POP: the client downloads mail, usually from the Inbox only. A setting such as “delete mail from server” can remove the Yahoo copy after download.
- Filters and POP: if Yahoo moves incoming mail out of the Inbox, a POP client may not download it.
12. Fix browser-only Yahoo Mail problems
If the Inbox is blank, slow, or its controls do not work, update your browser and test Yahoo Mail in a private window or another supported browser. Temporarily disable ad-blocking extensions or allowlist Yahoo Mail. Ad blockers can modify page code and interfere with Mail functionality.

If Yahoo works in a private window but not your normal browser, clear Yahoo cookies and site data, then disable extensions one at a time to find the conflict.
13. When the sender is the problem
If your Yahoo webmail works, the mailbox has space, and the message is not in Spam, Trash, or a filtered folder, ask the sender to:
- Verify every character of your Yahoo address, including the domain.
- Check for a bounce or failed-delivery message.
- Contact their email provider if the message failed before reaching Yahoo.
If messages from several unrelated senders fail while a webmail test also fails, the issue is more likely account-side or a Yahoo delivery problem than a sender typo.

FAQ
Why is Yahoo Mail not receiving emails on my phone?
Check Yahoo Mail at mail.yahoo.com first. If messages appear there, update the app, sign out and back in, or remove and re-add the Yahoo account. For iPhone Mail, check Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts → Fetch New Data and make sure Yahoo is set to Fetch.
Can a full Yahoo mailbox stop receiving mail?
Yes. A full mailbox cannot receive new messages. Delete large messages and attachments, then empty Trash. Messages sent while the mailbox was full are not stored and cannot be recovered.
Why can’t I find a Yahoo email with search?
Yahoo excludes Spam and Trash from normal search results. Open those folders manually, and also check custom folders, Archive, and filters.
Does Yahoo Mail still offer 1 TB of free storage?
Not as a universal free allowance. Yahoo’s current U.S. documentation lists 20 GB for a standard account and describes 1 TB as a paid storage option. Available plans can vary by region.

Re-add the account using Outlook’s Yahoo provider option. If manual or older sign-in is required, use a Yahoo-generated app password and the current IMAP and SMTP settings rather than your regular Yahoo password.
Can Yahoo recover deleted emails?
Yahoo can attempt to restore messages lost or deleted within the previous seven days. Recovery is not guaranteed, and restored messages are generally returned to the Inbox.
The Bottom Line
The fastest diagnosis is the browser test: send a message to your Yahoo address through mail.yahoo.com. If it arrives, repair the app or mail client. If it does not, check Spam and Trash manually, filters, blocked addresses, Reply-to and forwarding settings, storage, account inactivity, and possible unauthorized access. Only after those checks should you investigate the sender or request message recovery.
