If voicemail seems to be merging after an iOS 17 update, first identify where the messages are appearing. Voicemails showing up on multiple iPhones may involve Apple ID and iCloud syncing; messages being captured on the iPhone instead of your carrier’s mailbox may involve Live Voicemail. Apple has not confirmed a universal iOS 17 bug that merges separate voicemail boxes, so use the steps below to distinguish the symptoms before changing settings.
Identify which voicemail problem you have
Visual Voicemail is the list of messages in the Phone app. Live Voicemail transcribes a caller’s message in real time on the iPhone and lets you answer while the caller is leaving it. These features depend on carrier and regional availability. See Apple’s voicemail guidance.

| What you notice | Likely troubleshooting path |
|---|---|
| The same voicemail messages appear on more than one iPhone. | Check whether the iPhones share an Apple ID and whether Phone & FaceTime is syncing in iCloud. |
| A caller’s message appears on the iPhone, but not in the carrier’s voicemail system. | Temporarily turn off Live Voicemail and test the carrier mailbox. |
| The issue affects a business or managed carrier number. | Check Live Voicemail behavior and ask the carrier to verify the line’s voicemail provisioning and call handling. |
The timing after an update does not by itself establish that iOS caused the symptom. Apple’s documentation explains voicemail syncing and Live Voicemail, but does not say that iOS 17 universally merges separate voicemail boxes. The Mac Observer likewise reported no official explanation for the cross-device merging reports; treat syncing as a troubleshooting lead, not a confirmed diagnosis: The Mac Observer’s report.

If messages appear on multiple iPhones
Check the Apple ID and iCloud setting
- On each affected iPhone, open Settings and check the name at the top to see which Apple ID is signed in.
- On a device using the shared Apple ID, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud.
- Tap See All next to Saved to iCloud, then check Phone & FaceTime. Apple’s current guide documents this path for voicemail syncing; labels can vary by iOS version. See Apple’s support guide.
If the devices share an Apple ID and Phone & FaceTime syncing is on, that may explain why voicemail data is available across them. Apple confirms syncing is supported, but does not identify it as the universal cause of messages appearing merged.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Test with Phone & FaceTime syncing off
The Mac Observer describes turning off Phone syncing in iCloud on each affected iPhone as a possible workaround for cross-device merging. If you try it, use the Phone & FaceTime control in the iCloud settings on the affected devices, then see whether new messages remain separate. This is a secondary-source workaround, not an Apple-confirmed fix; the report describes it as temporary, and says the behavior may return.
Turning off this sync means voicemail will no longer stay shared across those devices. If shared access is useful to you, weigh that loss against the workaround before changing the setting.

If messages are going to the iPhone instead of the carrier mailbox
Temporarily turn off Live Voicemail
- On current iOS guidance, open Settings > Apps > Phone.
- Tap Live Voicemail and turn it off.
- Ask someone to leave a test message, then check whether it appears in the carrier’s voicemail system.
Apple says that when the iPhone is off or outside the carrier’s range, calls go to carrier voicemail if that service is available. Live Voicemail and carrier voicemail can behave differently depending on the carrier and region; consult Apple’s feature guidance.

Check for carrier-specific call handling
Some managed services have specific interactions with Live Voicemail. Verizon, for example, documented that an iPhone using a Verizon One Talk number could answer and store a voicemail on the iPhone rather than deposit it on Verizon’s platform when Live Voicemail was enabled. Verizon recommended turning Live Voicemail off for affected One Talk configurations. This is a service-specific recommendation, not a fix to apply to every carrier or plan: Verizon’s One Talk notice.

If the problem continues
Contact your carrier and ask it to verify voicemail provisioning and the line’s call handling. Tell support whether messages are duplicated across devices, missing from the carrier mailbox, or both; also mention whether the line uses a managed service such as One Talk. Carrier and regional availability affect which voicemail features work on a line.
Avoid deleting messages, resetting the voicemail box, changing SIMs, or signing out of your Apple ID as first-line fixes for this symptom. The sources cited here do not establish those actions as safe remedies. Signing out or changing account settings can also affect services beyond voicemail.
