If your Garmin golf watch shows the wrong distance, first make sure you are comparing it with the same target: the watch normally measures to the center of the green, not the pin. Then check yards versus meters, satellite reception, and whether the error happens across the course or only on particular holes. Garmin considers a discrepancy of 5 yards or less acceptable for consumer GPS.

1. Check that you are comparing the same target

Garmin golf watches report distance to the center of the green by default. A course marker or a shot measured to the day’s pin may use a different reference point, so the numbers can differ even when the watch is working correctly. Garmin says the center-to-pin difference can be 20 to 30 yards on some shots; that is Garmin support guidance, not an independent measurement.

Compare the watch with a marker that also measures to the green center. If you are using a pin position, check whether you manually moved the pin on the watch and whether the marker is actually to the pin. Garmin says a discrepancy of 5 yards or less is acceptable for consumer GPS.

2. Check the distance units

Garmin identifies an incorrect meters-or-yards setting as its most common cause of consistently wrong golf distances. If every reading seems systematically off, check this before changing anything else.

  1. Start the Golf activity and wait for GPS to be acquired.
  2. Open Settings or Golf Settings in the activity.
  3. Select Golf Distance or Distance Units, depending on the model.
  4. Choose Yards or Meters to match the units you expect.

Menu names and locations vary by Approach model, so use the owner’s manual if those options do not appear.

3. Improve the satellite fix

A watch needs a clear view of the sky to acquire GPS. Start the round or wait for GPS outdoors, away from buildings, a roof or cover, and dense foliage. If the watch is slow to acquire satellites or distances remain unreliable, Garmin recommends updating software and syncing the device to refresh predictive-orbit files. Restarting the watch is another step to try if it still cannot acquire satellites.

4. Update watch software and course maps

Garmin says all Approach devices can update software and maps through Garmin Express using the device’s USB charging cable. Depending on the model, software updates may also be available through Garmin Golf, and CourseView maps may be updated over Wi-Fi using Map Manager. The supported route differs by device; follow the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming every option is available.

Garmin’s update guidance describes CourseView coverage of more than 43,000 golf courses worldwide. That is a coverage figure, not a guarantee that every course or every device has identical map availability or capacity.

Garmin Approach® S50, Golf GPS Smartwatch, 43mm, Black
  • Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist

Update information can be model-specific. For example, Garmin’s Approach S50 support page lists software version 9.15 dated August 2026, with fixes for a possible issue in which hazards and layups showed large distances and custom targets saved far from the hole appeared on the device. That release note applies to the S50 only; check your model’s support page for its current version and notes.

5. Isolate course-data or pin-placement errors

If the watch is accurate on most holes but wrong on one course or a few specific holes, the issue may be course data, a changed layout, or pin placement rather than general GPS reception. Check that you are measuring to the same point, then report a suspected course-map problem to Garmin using its Golf Course Report Form. Garmin notes that course remodeling and database updates can explain localized inaccuracies.

6. Reset only as a last resort

Garmin’s satellite troubleshooting guidance treats a reset as a last resort after simpler steps fail. A factory reset restores default settings and deletes user data. Sync the watch first, then follow the reset instructions in the owner’s manual for your exact model.
