If a Chrome page and its video both look inverted or harsh, check Chrome’s High Contrast extension and Windows color settings first. If only the video image looks too dark, washed out, or oversaturated, investigate HDR, display settings, and Chrome’s GPU acceleration instead. The scope of the problem is the fastest clue to the right fix.
First, determine whether the problem affects the page or only the video
Open a regular text-heavy webpage and compare its text, buttons, and images with the video. If the whole page has inverted or unusually strong colors, start with Chrome’s accessibility settings. If the surrounding page looks normal and only the moving picture is wrong, skip to the HDR and GPU checks.
- Whole page affected: likely a Chrome contrast scheme or an operating-system color setting.
- Video frame only: more likely an HDR, display, GPU, or driver-path issue than a webpage contrast filter.
- Colors change in fullscreen: check HDR support and playback conditions for the display being used.
Turn off or change Chrome’s High Contrast settings
Google’s Chrome Help instructions for the High Contrast extension explain that it can adjust or remove webpage colors and use different schemes for individual sites. Use the extension’s toolbar controls to select a scheme under “Color scheme for [site]” or disable the extension if you no longer want it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome Chrome pages are not affected by the extension, including the Chrome Web Store, New Tab, and Chrome Settings pages. That means a normal-looking New Tab page does not rule out an extension effect on other websites. On recent Chrome versions for Windows, Chrome’s color settings may automatically follow Windows color settings, so also check the system setting if changing the extension does not resolve page-wide color changes.

Check whether Windows HDR is enabled and supported
HDR changes the way a display presents highlights, shadows, and color range. Microsoft describes Windows HDR as making the screen more vivid, but HDR video requires a compatible display and a supported playback path; turning HDR on is not a universal fix for dark or washed-out video.
- Open Settings > System > Display in Windows 11.
- Select the display that is actually showing the video.
- Open HDR and check whether HDR video streaming is supported and enabled.
Microsoft’s Windows HDR settings guidance notes that HDR availability depends on the display and supported hardware and software. If you use more than one display, check the settings for the screen playing the video rather than assuming all connected screens support HDR in the same way.

Calibrate HDR video for washed-out highlights or dark shadows
If your supported built-in display offers Display calibration for HDR video, use the symptom-specific adjustment in Microsoft’s HDR video calibration instructions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If bright scenes look washed out, move the calibration slider to the right.
- If dark scenes lack detail, move the slider to the left.
Restore the default calibration if the change makes other content look worse. Calibration is intended for supported displays; it is not a general contrast control for every monitor.

Test Chrome’s hardware acceleration
Chrome uses the device’s GPU for graphics-intensive tasks such as video playback, according to Chrome Enterprise and Education Help. If only the video looks wrong, toggling hardware acceleration can help determine whether the issue is in the GPU, driver, or HDR rendering path. It is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.
- In Chrome, open Settings.
- Search Settings for hardware acceleration and open the available graphics setting.
- Change the hardware-acceleration setting, then restart Chrome when prompted.
- Replay the same video and compare its colors and playback performance.
Keep the setting that gives you acceptable video and graphics performance. Because GPU acceleration can affect how graphics-intensive work is processed, a change may improve color behavior while affecting performance, or make no visible difference. If the image changes with the toggle, that points toward the GPU/display path rather than a page-wide contrast scheme.

Recheck playback conditions after changing HDR or display settings
Microsoft notes that HDR video streaming can depend on display capability, fullscreen playback on some displays, battery and energy-saver settings, and whether playback was restarted after a settings change. After changing HDR or calibration settings, restart the video and check it in the playback mode where the problem occurs. On a laptop, compare behavior with battery or energy-saving restrictions in mind.
