If HelixSR crashes, shows a black screen, or runs badly on a Steam Deck or another AMD handheld, first stop treating it as a system-wide graphics driver. HelixSR is installed per game, works through a DirectX 12 integration route, and can be switched or removed with the official setup while restoring the files it replaced. The safest recovery is therefore to close the game, identify the route you installed, and use that setup’s Update, Switch, or Remove action before deleting any DLL by hand.
This guide separates documented compatibility from assumptions. HelixSR’s maintainer declares support for AMD RDNA 1 and newer on Windows and Linux/Proton, but says development and testing were done on an AMD BC-250 running Linux with Mesa RADV. Other GPUs and Windows have not been tested by the maintainer, so a fix that works on one handheld is not proof of universal compatibility.
What HelixSR is—and why compatibility comes first
HelixSR is an unofficial, per-game Direct3D 12 upscaler. It runs NVIDIA’s DLSS Model E network as ordinary Direct3D 12 compute shaders on AMD graphics hardware. It does not require NVIDIA Tensor cores, an NVIDIA driver, CUDA, or ROCm. The mod is intended to provide super-resolution through a game’s supported rendering path; it is not a replacement for the handheld’s graphics driver and it does not install a system-wide upscaling layer.

The maintainer reports testing on an AMD BC-250 with Linux and Mesa RADV, while other GPUs and Windows remain untested by the maintainer. Steam Deck hardware and other AMD handhelds may therefore behave differently even when they meet the RDNA requirement.

HelixSR also requires DirectX 12. A game running through DirectX 11, Vulkan, or another graphics API is outside the documented compatibility scope unless its selected integration route presents a supported DirectX 12 path. Confirm the game’s graphics API before changing files.
Finally, HelixSR supplies super-resolution only. It does not generate frames itself. A game’s own frame-generation feature, or frame generation provided through OptiScaler, can operate alongside the upscaler, but calling HelixSR a frame-generation mod leads to the wrong diagnosis when frame pacing or latency is the problem.
Check these conditions before changing anything
- API: The game must be using DirectX 12 for the documented HelixSR routes.
- Per-game installation: HelixSR affects the selected game, not every title on the handheld.
- Selected upscaler: Record whether the game is configured for FSR 3.1, DLSS, XeSS, or FSR 2. That choice determines which integration route can work.
- Operating system: Linux/Proton and Windows are both named in the project’s compatibility statement, but only Linux on an AMD BC-250 is identified as maintainer-tested.
- Online play: Do not use the experimental loader in an online game or a game with anti-cheat. Changing what the game sees can be treated as tampering and can put an account at risk of a ban.
If one of these conditions is false, troubleshooting individual settings will not make the installation supported. Use the game’s normal upscaler or remove HelixSR instead.
Use the supported installation route
The setup offers two standard approaches and one explicitly experimental approach. Choose the route that matches the game’s existing upscaler and avoid stacking DLL-based mods without checking for conflicts.

The direct loader is not a general-purpose fallback. If you are on Windows, using anti-cheat, or already have a local dxgi.dll from another mod, choose a supported non-loader route or run the game without HelixSR.

Safe recovery procedure
Follow this order for crashes, black screens, and a sudden performance drop. It preserves a known-good baseline and avoids turning a reversible installation into a manual file hunt.
- Close the game completely. Exit to the desktop and make sure the game process is no longer running before changing HelixSR. Do not update, switch, or uninstall DLLs while the game is open.
- Open HelixSR’s setup for the affected game. Identify whether the current installation is the FSR 3.1 drop-in, the OptiScaler route, or the direct DLSS loader. If you cannot identify it, use the setup’s remove flow rather than deleting files at random.
- Run Update first. The maintainer documents the setup’s update/switch/remove flow as the repair path. Updating can replace a damaged or stale HelixSR installation without losing the original game files preserved by setup.
- Switch away from the experimental loader when possible. For a game that supports FSR 3.1, select the FSR drop-in. For a game exposing DLSS, XeSS, or FSR 2 through OptiScaler, use the OptiScaler route. Do not combine the direct loader with OptiScaler, ReShade, or another
dxgi.dllmod. - Remove HelixSR if the game still fails. The official uninstaller can remove HelixSR from selected games and restore the files it replaced. The setup preserves originals either as the original files or in a HelixSR backup folder. Let that process complete before launching the game again.
- Launch the unmodified game once. This establishes whether the crash or black screen is caused by the mod at all. If the game still fails with HelixSR removed, investigate the game, Proton version, or handheld operating system separately.
- Reinstall only one route. After a clean launch, reinstall the route that matches the game’s API and upscaler. Change one variable at a time so a later failure can be attributed to a specific integration.
Do not advise yourself to delete every DLL in the game folder. A game may need files that happen to share a name with a mod component, and deleting the wrong file can make the official restore path less reliable.
Fixing startup crashes
When the game crashes immediately
An immediate crash usually points to an integration mismatch, a conflicting loader, or a stale file after a game update rather than to a universal handheld defect. Confirm DirectX 12 and the game’s selected upscaler, then repeat the safe recovery procedure. If the direct loader is installed, replace it with the FSR drop-in or OptiScaler route where the game supports one.
Check the executable’s folder for competing local DLL mods. The experimental loader cannot coexist with OptiScaler, ReShade, or another mod that places dxgi.dll beside the executable. Remove the conflict through that mod’s documented uninstallation process or use HelixSR’s official remove action before installing a different route.
When a previously working game crashes after an update
Game updates can change DLLs, exported functions, or the way an upscaler is initialized. The HelixSR README specifically warns that the experimental direct-loader path may stop working after game updates. Close the game, run HelixSR’s Update action, and test again. If the update still breaks the loader, switch to a standard route or remove HelixSR until a compatible integration is available.

When an online or anti-cheat game is involved
Do not troubleshoot by repeatedly launching the direct loader in an anti-cheat title. The loader changes what the game sees, and anti-cheat systems may interpret that as tampering. The documented risk includes an account ban. Remove HelixSR and use the game’s supported, unmodified rendering options for online play.
Fixing a black screen
Verify the rendering path before adjusting image settings
A black screen immediately after enabling the mod is a strong reason to recheck the API and route, not to raise or lower the render scale. HelixSR’s documented scope is DirectX 12. Confirm the game is actually launching in DirectX 12 and that its in-game upscaler matches the route installed. A FSR 3.1 replacement used in a title that is currently calling a different upscaler can fail before the first frame appears.
Remove conflicting overlays and DLL hooks
Temporarily disable unrelated overlays and local graphics DLL mods, especially any component that supplies dxgi.dll. The direct-loader route is explicitly incompatible with OptiScaler, ReShade, and another mod using that filename. Test with only one integration layer active; re-enable other software one item at a time after the game displays normally.
Restore the original files instead of guessing
Use HelixSR’s Remove action so the setup can restore the original game files from its backup. This is safer than deleting the visible HelixSR DLL because the setup knows which file was replaced and where its backup is stored. Launch the clean game once, then decide whether a different supported route is appropriate.
Separate a mod black screen from a platform black screen
If the game remains black after HelixSR has been removed, the symptom is not established as HelixSR-specific. On a Steam Deck, apply Valve’s general isolation steps—install available system updates, restart, and exit or disable third-party desktop applications—then retest the unmodified game. Persistent instability in a non-Steam application should be taken to that application’s support channel, as Valve’s guidance treats it as an application issue rather than a guaranteed Deck-wide fix.

Diagnosing poor performance without guessing
There is no verified cross-handheld frame-rate result or crash-rate statistic for HelixSR. Independent coverage published on October 10, 2026, showed footage involving a Steam Deck OLED and an ROG Ally X but did not provide a clear, controlled comparison between FSR 3.1 and DLSS 3.7. Treat that footage as an example of use, not a benchmark that predicts your device.
Establish a clean baseline
- Remove or disable HelixSR and launch the game with its normal upscaler.
- Record the same scene, resolution, refresh rate, and frame-generation state.
- Close unnecessary background tasks and third-party overlays.
- Reinstall one HelixSR route, then repeat the same scene without changing several graphics options at once.
This comparison tells you whether the performance change follows HelixSR or another variable. HelixSR’s compute-shader implementation may have a cost on a particular GPU, but the available evidence does not establish a universal penalty or a guaranteed gain over the game’s native upscaler.
Check platform-level causes
Valve’s general performance guidance identifies unnecessary background tasks, refresh-rate settings, outdated drivers, and game video options as possible causes of low performance. On Steam Deck, install available system updates and restart before testing. Disable or exit third-party desktop applications and overlays. Verify the display refresh rate and the game’s frame limit, then alter one setting at a time.
On Windows handhelds, install the manufacturer’s current graphics driver and restart before comparing results. The HelixSR maintainer has not tested Windows, so a Windows result should be treated as an individual compatibility case rather than evidence that every Windows handheld is supported.

HelixSR does not generate frames. If a game or OptiScaler supplies FSR frame generation, measure it separately from the upscaler. A change in latency, frame pacing, or displayed frame count may come from frame generation, the game’s cap, or the display refresh rate rather than from HelixSR’s super-resolution pass.

Steam Deck isolation steps
For a Steam Deck that is unstable even after HelixSR is removed, use this short platform check:
- Install all available SteamOS and game updates.
- Restart the Deck rather than only returning to Gaming Mode.
- Exit or disable third-party desktop applications and overlays.
- Retest the unmodified game, then retest HelixSR with a single supported route.
- If a non-Steam application remains unstable, contact that application’s support as Valve recommends for persistent application-specific problems.
These steps isolate general system instability; they are not confirmed HelixSR-specific fixes. Keep the distinction when documenting the result.
Collect the right logs before asking for help
When the problem persists, include the exact game, operating system, GPU or handheld model, DirectX 12 confirmation, and the installation route. The HelixSR README requests helixsr.log for problems with the mod. For the experimental loader, include both helixsr_loader.log and helixsr.log.

Describe the first failing event—launch crash, black screen after the first logo, or reduced performance in a repeatable scene—and state whether the clean game launches after removal. Mention any OptiScaler, ReShade, overlay, or other local DLL mod present in the game directory. That information is more useful than a general statement that HelixSR is “not working.”
What not to do
- Do not assume that an AMD RDNA handheld has been tested simply because it falls within the project’s declared compatibility range.
- Do not install the direct DLSS loader on Windows on the strength of Linux/Proton reports.
- Do not use the experimental loader in online or anti-cheat games.
- Do not stack the loader with OptiScaler, ReShade, or another
dxgi.dllmod. - Do not delete DLLs randomly before using the setup’s backup-aware Remove action.
- Do not quote footage from a Deck OLED or ROG Ally X as a controlled performance benchmark.
- Do not buy a new handheld, dock, microSD card, or other accessory as a presumed fix for these software symptoms. The available evidence establishes no hardware purchase that resolves HelixSR crashes, black screens, or low frame rate.
When to leave HelixSR removed
Keep the game on its native upscaler when it uses a non-DirectX 12 API, when no supported route matches its upscaler, when the game is protected by anti-cheat, or when the clean game is stable and the HelixSR route adds no measured benefit in your repeatable test. HelixSR is useful only when the game, API, operating system, and integration method line up; removing it is a valid final configuration, not a failed repair.
The most defensible troubleshooting result is therefore specific: identify the game’s API and upscaler, use one documented route, preserve the original files, measure against a clean baseline, and report the relevant logs when the issue remains. No current evidence supports a universal fix or a reproducible frame-rate promise across Steam Deck and other AMD handhelds.
