Windows 11 still includes the built-in Guest account, but it is disabled by default. Enabling it with net user guest /active:yes activates the account; it does not guarantee that a Guest tile will appear on the sign-in screen.
That distinction matters. If Guest is missing, first verify whether the account is disabled. If it is enabled but still absent from the login screen, use the supported policy or account-management checks below rather than assuming the account was deleted.
What the Windows 11 Guest account actually is
The built-in Guest account is a predefined local account named Guest. It has limited rights, belongs to the built-in Guests group, and has a blank password by default. Microsoft leaves it disabled because it can provide anonymous access and may allow previous users to leave accessible services or resources behind.

1. Enable Guest from an elevated Command Prompt
This is the quickest supported way to activate the built-in account.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this exact command:
net user guest /active:yes
You should receive a message indicating that the command completed successfully. Restart Windows or sign out, then check the sign-in screen.
To verify the account status, run:
net user guest
Look for Account active. If it says Yes, the account is enabled even if no Guest tile is visible.
2. Enable the account with Local Security Policy
Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions provide a policy setting for the built-in Guest account. Windows 11 Home does not provide this policy editor by default.
- Press
Win + R, typesecpol.msc, and pressEnter. - Open Local Policies.
- Select Security Options.
- Find Accounts: Guest account status.
- Double-click it, select Enabled, and click Apply.
- Sign out or restart Windows.
The underlying policy uses 0 for disabled and 1 for enabled. On a managed computer, an organization policy can later overwrite your local setting.
3. Use Group Policy on supported editions
On Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education, you can also configure the setting in Local Group Policy:

Win + R, entergpedit.msc, and pressEnter. - Go to:
Computer Configuration

> Security Settings
> Local Policies
> Security Options
- Open Accounts: Guest account status.
- Select Enabled, then click OK.
- Restart Windows or run
gpupdate /forcein an elevated Command Prompt.
Windows 11 Home does not include gpedit.msc by default. Third-party scripts that add the editor are not equivalent to a supported Pro or Enterprise policy configuration. On Home, use the elevated net user command instead.
4. Check whether the missing tile is only a sign-in-screen issue
Activating the account and displaying it as a sign-in tile are separate things. Windows may list Guest as an enabled local account while not enumerating it on the lock or sign-in screen. This has been reported even after a restart.
Check the account directly:
net user guest
If Account active is Yes, Windows knows about the account. A missing tile does not by itself prove that Guest is disabled.
To try another account, use the normal account switcher:
- Open Start.
- Select your account picture or the Accounts icon.
- Choose Switch user.
- At the sign-in screen, select Guest if it is listed.
Switch user is not available on every device configuration. Some systems show Other user instead, allowing you to enter credentials manually.

Local-account visibility can differ on domain-joined and organization-managed computers. Sign-in policies may prioritize domain accounts, hide local users, or prevent changes to local security settings. A policy applied by Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory, mobile-device management, or other management software can also reverse a local change.

If this is a work or school computer, ask the administrator before changing Guest. Do not use registry tweaks to bypass an organization’s sign-in policy.
6. Do not confuse Guest with a normal local account
Windows 11 Settings does not have an Add Guest button. Its account-creation workflow creates a separate local user, not the built-in Guest account:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Under Add other user, select Add account.
- Choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
- Select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Give the account a name that is not
GuestorLocal, then finish the wizard.
This is usually the better option when you need a separate sign-in for a visitor. You can remove the account later from Settings > Accounts > Other users. It is not the built-in Guest account and will not inherit Guest’s built-in identity.
Similarly, adding an ordinary user to the Guests group does not convert that user into the built-in Guest account. The built-in account and the group membership are different things.
7. Understand the blank-password limitation
The built-in Guest account has a blank password by default. Windows includes the policy Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only, which is enabled by default. That restriction limits passwordless local accounts to sign-in at the physical console; it prevents remote logon with a blank password.
Do not disable this restriction simply to make Guest work over a network. A blank-password account is a poor choice for remote access. If someone needs network access, create a properly secured account with an appropriate password and permissions instead.

8. Avoid treating the registry workaround as a guaranteed fix
Some online instructions recommend adding a username value under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogonSpecialAccountsUserList
This registry location is sometimes suggested for account-enumeration problems, but it is not a universal or officially guaranteed solution for making the built-in Guest tile appear. Reported Windows 11 cases include systems where the key did not exist and the account remained absent after the proposed registry changes.
Back up the registry before making any registry change, and do not use this technique as a substitute for enabling Guest or checking an organization’s sign-in policy.
9. Disable Guest when you are finished
Microsoft recommends leaving the built-in Guest account disabled unless it is necessary. To turn it off again, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
net user guest /active:no
Or, on supported Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions, return to Security Options > Accounts: Guest account status and select Disabled.

Which solution should you use?
| Situation | Best approach |
|---|---|
| You specifically need the built-in Guest identity | Enable it with net user guest /active:yes, then verify its status. |
| Guest is enabled but no tile appears | Use net user guest to confirm the state; the tile is not guaranteed to be enumerated. |
| You need a safer visitor account | Create a separate local account through Settings > Accounts > Other users. |
| You have Windows 11 Home | Use the elevated net user command; gpedit.msc and lusrmgr.msc are not available by default. |
| The computer belongs to an organization | Check with the administrator because domain and management policies can alter account enumeration. |
FAQ
Did Windows 11 remove the built-in Guest account?
No. Windows 11 still documents the built-in Guest account, but it is disabled by default and its tile is not guaranteed to appear on the sign-in screen after activation.

Why does Guest show as active but not appear at login?
Account activation and sign-in-screen enumeration are separate. Windows can recognize an enabled local account without displaying a dedicated tile. Device configuration, domain membership, and organization policies can also affect which accounts are shown.
Can I add Guest from Windows 11 Settings?
No. Settings offers a general local-account workflow under Accounts > Other users > Add account. That creates a separate local user; it does not enable the built-in Guest account.
Is a new local account the same as Guest?
No. A Settings-created local account has a different identity and permissions. It is generally the safer choice for a disposable visitor login, but it is not the predefined Guest account.

Does Windows 11 Home support gpedit.msc or lusrmgr.msc?
Neither Local Group Policy Editor nor the Local Users and Groups snap-in is available by default on Windows 11 Home. Use an elevated net user command instead of relying on unsupported third-party additions.
How do I disable Guest again?
Open Command Prompt with Run as administrator and run net user guest /active:no. On supported business editions, you can also disable Accounts: Guest account status in Security Options.
The Bottom Line
Run net user guest /active:yes from an elevated Command Prompt and verify the result with net user guest. If the account is active but no tile appears, that is a Windows 11 sign-in-screen enumeration issue—not proof that the account failed to enable. For most visitors, create a separate local account through Settings > Accounts > Other users, and disable the built-in Guest account when it is no longer needed.
