If Google TV voice search stopped responding, first confirm that you are holding the remote’s Assistant/Mic button while speaking. Then check the batteries and LED, reboot the streaming device, use a phone as a temporary remote if needed, and only then reset and re-pair the remote. The exact reset sequence depends on whether you have a Google TV Streamer Voice Remote or a Chromecast with Google TV Voice Remote.
This guide covers those two remote families. Other televisions that use the Google TV interface may have different hardware and reset instructions.
How voice search is supposed to work
On both supported remote families, voice input starts at the Assistant/Mic button. Press and hold that button, speak your search or command, and release it when finished. You do not need to say “Hey Google” before speaking through the remote. Google gives examples such as “What should I watch?” and “Find funny movies.” The button is a push-to-talk control, not an always-listening microphone.

Identify the remote before changing anything
Reset instructions are not interchangeable. Use the generation that matches your hardware:

The newer Streamer remote has a different button layout and reset combination from the Chromecast remote. If you are unsure which model you have, compare the buttons and follow the procedure shown for your device rather than trying both reset methods.
Use this least-disruptive troubleshooting order
Work from reversible checks toward actions that erase settings. This order separates a depleted battery or lost Bluetooth connection from a microphone-specific problem.

1. Check the batteries and watch the LED
Replace or reseat the batteries
Remove the remote’s batteries and install the supplied originals or two fresh 1.5-volt AAA batteries. Insert them with the polarity marks aligned. Google’s troubleshooting flow also advises removing the batteries for five minutes and trying again if the remote does not respond normally.
When batteries are inserted correctly, the LED should flash twice quickly. No flashes can mean the batteries are exhausted, installed backwards, or not making contact. A battery change is a power check, not a guaranteed microphone repair: if navigation works but voice still fails, continue through the software and pairing steps.
Interpret the light without assuming it proves speech recognition
LED behavior identifies a remote state, but it does not prove that Google Assistant understood your words. On the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, a solid LED means “The microphone is on.” On the Chromecast Voice Remote, a solid LED can mean that the microphone is on or that a firmware update is being applied; during a firmware update, the microphone is not open.

Google’s complete state table distinguishes battery installation, pairing, and microphone activity. It lists two quick flashes after battery installation, a slow pulse when ready to pair, a fast pulse during a Streamer-remote pairing attempt, and two quick blinks after successful Streamer pairing. Do not transfer every pattern from one remote generation to the other. Refer to Google’s LED-state guide for the model you own.

2. Reboot the Google TV device
A reboot clears temporary software and Bluetooth states without erasing your apps or account data. Google places this near the beginning of its “Voice Remote doesn’t work at all” procedure for both Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer.
- Turn the streaming device off through its normal power control, or disconnect its power if the on-screen controls are inaccessible.
- Wait briefly for the device to shut down completely.
- Reconnect power or start it again and wait for the home screen to load.
- Hold the Assistant/Mic button and test a short command such as “Find funny movies.”
If the remote cannot navigate at all, use the phone-remote method in the next section to reach the device controls. If navigation works but only voice input fails, a reboot is still worth trying before erasing the remote.
3. Use your phone as a temporary remote
A phone can provide navigation while the physical remote is unreliable. This is especially useful when you must open the pairing menu or forget an old Bluetooth entry before re-pairing.
- Set up the phone as a virtual remote for the Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer, following Google’s on-screen or phone setup prompts.
- Use the virtual directional controls to open Settings > Remotes & Accessories.
- Select the listed Voice Remote.
- Choose Forget and confirm if you are deliberately removing the existing pairing.
- Return to the accessories screen and choose Pair remote or accessory when you are ready to connect the physical remote again.
The phone is a navigation workaround, not a replacement microphone for the physical remote. If the device does not appear in the phone-remote setup, first verify that the phone and streaming device meet Google’s connection prompts and are on the same local network as requested by the setup screen.

4. Reset the remote using the correct procedure
Reset the remote only after batteries and a reboot have failed. Google states that a remote factory reset returns it to default factory settings and clears its data; the action cannot be undone. A remote reset is separate from resetting the streaming device.

Google TV Streamer Voice Remote
- Press and hold Mute and the center Select button at the same time.
- Continue holding until the LED becomes solid white. Google says starting the reset normally takes no more than 12 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the reset indication appears.
- Proceed to pairing. If the remote does not reconnect automatically, use the Back-and-Home procedure below.
Chromecast Voice Remote
- Remove both batteries and wait five minutes.
- Press and hold the Home button while reinserting the batteries.
- Keep holding Home while the LED remains solid.
- Release Home when the LED begins to pulse.
- Continue with the pairing steps shown on the television.

5. Pair the remote again
Pair from the Google TV Streamer setup screen
When the television displays “Start pairing,” hold Back and Home together until the remote’s light pulses. Follow the prompts until the screen confirms the connection. The Streamer remote may show a fast pulse during the attempt and two quick blinks after successful pairing.
Re-pair a Chromecast Voice Remote
Hold Back and Home for about three seconds when the pairing prompt appears. If automatic pairing does not start, operate the device with the phone virtual remote, open Settings > Remotes & Accessories, select Pair remote or accessory, and follow the television’s instructions.

6. Do not factory-reset the streaming device first
A Chromecast with Google TV factory reset is a separate, much more disruptive action. It removes device settings and requires setup again. Google places it after battery checks, rebooting, remote reset, and pairing attempts. Reserve it for a problem that persists after the remote has been reset and correctly paired, or when other device-level symptoms show that the streaming software itself is damaged.
Before considering a device reset, confirm that the physical remote can control menus after pairing and test voice search again. If navigation and other apps work normally while only voice input remains unavailable, a device reset is not established as a guaranteed microphone fix.

Diagnose the symptom instead of treating every failure as a microphone fault
Navigation works, but voice search does not
This pattern narrows the problem to microphone activation, remote software, or the voice feature itself. Hold the Assistant/Mic button firmly, watch for the appropriate LED indication, reboot the streaming device, and then follow the remote reset and pairing sequence for your model. Google’s reviewed troubleshooting procedure does not provide a definitive microphone diagnostic or promise that a particular step will restore speech recognition, so do not treat a solid LED as proof that audio reached Google Assistant.
No buttons control the Google TV interface
If directional, Home, Back, and selection buttons all fail, treat it as a power, Bluetooth, or pairing problem rather than a voice-only problem. Start with batteries and the device reboot, then use the phone virtual remote to forget and pair the accessory again. A remote reset is appropriate when the connection remains unusable after those checks.
Only the television’s power or volume buttons fail
Google notes that television power and volume control can use infrared (IR), while navigation of the streaming interface uses the remote’s Bluetooth connection. Therefore, a failure limited to TV power or volume does not establish that the remote microphone or Bluetooth navigation is broken. Test Home, Back, and directional controls separately before resetting the remote.
The LED is solid during an update
On a Chromecast Voice Remote, a solid LED can indicate firmware installation. Google says the microphone is not open during that update. Allow the update to finish, avoid repeatedly pressing the voice button, and test again after the light returns to its normal idle behavior.

When replacing the remote is reasonable
Consider a replacement only after fresh batteries, rebooting, the model-appropriate reset, and re-pairing have failed. Google says the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote can control Google TV Streamer (4K) or Chromecast with Google TV and recommends the remote included with the device for the best experience.
Before buying a Google TV Streamer Voice Remote or another replacement Google TV remote, verify the exact streaming device named in the listing. A remote that fits a similar-looking television may not support the same Bluetooth pairing process or Google Assistant button. If you only need a low-cost first check, two fresh AAA batteries are the directly supported consumable in Google’s troubleshooting flow; they should be presented as a power test, not as a guaranteed microphone repair.
