First separate two problems: a misplaced or jumping blue dot means Maps is having trouble estimating your phone’s location, while rerouting by itself can simply mean Google Maps found a different route because traffic changed. Check the dot and any GPS Signal Lost message before changing settings.
For a location problem, verify permission and device location accuracy, disable battery-saving mode, enable Wi‑Fi or mobile data, turn off Airplane mode, move where the phone has a clearer view of the sky, calibrate the compass when only the direction beam is wrong, and restart the phone if the position remains inaccurate. The menu names differ between Android and iPhone or iPad.
Identify the symptom before trying a fix

What the blue dot and accuracy circle mean
Google Maps uses the blue dot to represent the device’s estimated current location. A light-blue circle around it represents uncertainty: your phone may be anywhere within that circle. A small circle means the estimate is more precise; a large circle means Maps has less confidence. Tall buildings, covered parking structures, tunnels, and other obstructions can enlarge the uncertainty.

If the dot is gray or absent, Maps cannot find the current location. In that state it can display the last place the phone reported, which may look like a wrong position even though it is simply stale data. A direction problem is separate: when the dot is correctly placed but the beam is broad or points elsewhere, calibrate the compass rather than treating it as a lost GPS fix.

A short diagnostic sequence
- Tap the location button in Maps. Read any low-accuracy notice; it can provide a suggested correction or a calibration option.
- Confirm that the phone’s Location service is on and that Maps has an appropriate permission, including precise access where the operating system offers that choice.
- Disable Battery Saver on Android or Low Power Mode on iPhone and iPad. Make sure Wi‑Fi or mobile data is available and Airplane mode is off.
- Move outside or to a less obstructed position. A clear view of the sky is especially important when navigation reports that GPS has been lost.
- Calibrate only when the direction beam is the symptom. If the position itself stays wrong, continue with the platform-specific checks below.
- Restart the phone or tablet if the location remains inaccurate after those checks.
Fix an inaccurate location on Android
1. Read Maps’ low-accuracy prompt
Open Google Maps and tap the location button. If Maps reports low accuracy, follow its suggested fix. Depending on the device, the prompt can also offer compass calibration. This is the quickest way to see whether the app has detected a setting that needs attention.
2. Turn on device Location and Location Accuracy
On Android 12 and later, open Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy and turn Location Accuracy on. On Android 11 and earlier, the path is generally Settings > Location > Advanced > Location Accuracy. Manufacturers can rename or relocate these controls, so use the Settings search field for “Location Accuracy” if the path does not match.
Location Accuracy is a device-level service. On devices with Google Play services it can combine GPS, nearby Wi‑Fi access points, cellular towers, and available sensor data such as the accelerometer, barometer, and gyroscope. Turning it off can make a precise Maps position harder to obtain; it is not the same control as an individual app’s permission.

Open the app-permission page for Google Maps in Android Settings and allow location access. If the phone presents a Use precise location choice, enable it for Maps. Device-level Location Accuracy and per-app precise-location permission work together: enabling one does not automatically enable the other.
4. Remove common power and connection limits
Turn off Battery Saver while diagnosing a jumping or stale dot. Enable Wi‑Fi or mobile data, even when you are not using the connection to browse, because Maps can use nearby networks and network assistance to improve the estimate. Turn off Airplane mode. These checks matter when the dot stops updating or remains at a previous location.

5. Improve reception and calibrate the beam when needed
Move away from tall buildings, underground areas, and enclosed garages. If the dot is in the correct place but the blue beam is wide or points in the wrong direction, hold the phone and move it through a figure-eight motion a few times. This recalibrates the compass; it does not create a GPS signal where none is available.
6. Restart and test again
Restart the phone after changing the settings, then open Maps in an open area and check whether the circle has narrowed and the dot follows you. Some devices may offer camera-based calibration with Google Lens. Google notes that this option depends on Street View availability, so it will not appear everywhere.

1. Allow Google Maps to use Location Services
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and make sure Location Services is on. Select Google Maps and choose While Using the App or Always, according to how you use navigation. If the device offers a precise-location control for Maps, leave it enabled when you need an accurate position.
2. Turn off Low Power Mode while testing
If the dot jumps, stops updating, or remains stale, turn off Low Power Mode. Also turn on Wi‑Fi or mobile data and turn off Airplane mode. Network access can help Maps combine available location signals, and an offline or restricted connection can make a weak estimate persist longer.
3. Move to a clearer signal area
Test outside or away from tall structures, underground levels, and enclosed parking. When the dot is correctly placed but the direction beam is broad or misdirected, move the iPhone or iPad in a figure eight several times to calibrate its compass.

4. Restart if the position stays wrong
Restart the device, reopen Maps, and test again in an open area. Camera-based calibration with Google Lens may be offered in Maps when the necessary Street View coverage is available; its absence is not an indication that the phone is defective.
When Google Maps says “GPS Signal Lost”
Active navigation requires a GPS/GNSS location. Seeing a blue position while browsing the map does not prove that the phone has a sufficiently reliable GPS fix for turn-by-turn guidance. Navigation can therefore lose GPS even when the map still shows a recent position.
- Check the app’s location permission and the phone’s Location service. On Android, verify Location Accuracy as well as Maps’ precise permission; on iPhone or iPad, verify Location Services and Maps’ permission.
- Disable Battery Saver or Low Power Mode and confirm that Airplane mode is off.
- Stop in a safe place and test outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Do not judge GPS performance solely inside a building, tunnel, or covered garage.
- If the phone is in a vehicle, consider the window material. Google notes that metallic-base, glare-reducing window films can block GPS signals inside a car.
- Restart the device and try again. If it cannot acquire GPS when fully charged and outside under a clear sky, Google says the phone may need repair.
Do not attempt to troubleshoot while driving. Pull over before changing settings, calibrating the compass, or restarting.
Why the location estimate can be inaccurate
Maps estimates location from several technologies rather than from GPS alone. Their behavior explains why accuracy changes between an open street, a city canyon, a building, and an underground station.

GPS is commonly weaker indoors and underground. Buildings, garages, tunnels, dense high-rise streets, and vehicle window treatments can block or reflect signals. A short move to an open area is therefore a useful diagnostic, not merely a generic suggestion.

Why Maps keeps rerouting
Google Maps uses real-time traffic information to select routes and can display alternate routes for you to choose. A route may change when traffic conditions, road speeds, closures, or the available alternatives change. Repeated rerouting alone does not establish that the GPS is wrong.
Watch the blue dot while the route changes. If it remains on the road, moves smoothly, and no GPS warning appears, investigate the route and traffic information rather than recalibrating the phone. If the dot jumps to a parallel street, freezes, appears inside a building, or disappears at the same time as rerouting, use the location troubleshooting steps for your platform. The available guidance does not establish one universal cause or a predictable frequency for rerouting on every trip.
Rerouting with a trustworthy dot
- The position stays aligned with your actual road and direction.
- There is no GPS Signal Lost notice.
- The new route corresponds to a visible alternate or traffic change.
In this case, changing permissions or compass calibration is unlikely to address the route decision.
Rerouting with an unreliable dot
- The circle becomes very large or the dot jumps between roads.
- The dot turns gray, disappears, or remains at your previous location.
- Navigation reports that GPS has been lost.
Use the permission, power, connectivity, and clear-sky checks before judging the route itself.

Calibration is appropriate for a direction symptom: the dot is positioned correctly, but the beam is wide, rotates unexpectedly, or points behind you. Move the phone in a figure eight several times and retest. Maps may also show an in-app calibration suggestion, and camera-based calibration with Lens can appear where Street View coverage supports it.

Calibration cannot repair a misplaced dot, restore satellite reception inside a tunnel, or substitute for Location permission. If the position is wrong, return to the location and signal checks instead of repeating the figure-eight motion.

Android manufacturers and operating-system versions can change menu labels. If a path does not match, search Settings for “Location,” “Location Accuracy,” or “Battery Saver.”
When to stop troubleshooting and seek repair
A weak signal in a garage or between tall buildings is an environmental limitation. Persistent failure is different: after the phone is fully charged, permissions are correct, power-saving restrictions are off, and the device is outside with a clear sky, it should normally be able to attempt a GPS fix. If it cannot acquire one under those conditions, Google’s guidance indicates that the phone may need repair.
