First check what the notification says. A Google Maps notice that stays on screen may be tied to active navigation, while a traffic alert or location-sharing update may be a recurring notification you can manage in Maps or Android settings. The right fix depends on its type: ending an active task, disabling one notification category, and changing a permission are different actions with different consequences.

Work from the least disruptive option to the broadest. Read the notice, check whether its task is still active, and change only the matching setting. That helps distinguish a notification that is reporting something Maps is still doing from an unwanted alert or one that appears stuck.

Identify the notification before changing settings

Read the full notification text and note whether Maps is currently navigating or sharing your location. If you can, check the notification’s title and any visible buttons or category label. Do not start by disabling every Maps notification or removing location permissions: either change could affect features you still want to use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
What you see First thing to check Likely control
A notice associated with a route or ongoing navigation Whether the trip is still active in Maps End or complete the navigation task
A traffic alert, including one shown when Maps is not open The wording of the alert and whether it is the “Traffic updates when not using Maps” feature The matching Maps notification category and, if relevant, that feature’s settings
A notice about someone’s shared location Whether Google Location Sharing is active and whether you need the location to keep refreshing The location-sharing notification control, with the refresh consequence in mind
Another Maps prompt or recurring alert The notification’s category, if shown The corresponding category in Maps or Android settings

These are starting points, not a diagnosis based on appearance alone. Notification text and available categories can vary, and a notice that looks stuck may still be reporting an active task.

It also helps to separate two different problems: a notification that cannot be dismissed at all, and one that disappears but comes back later. If it resists a swipe, check whether it is tied to navigation or another ongoing task. If it returns, identify the alert category and change the matching control. A single broad change is not the right answer for both cases.

Before changing anything, ask what you want to preserve. If you still need directions, location sharing, or traffic updates, avoid switching off the feature’s underlying permission or all Maps notifications. If you only want to stop one kind of prompt, look for the category-level control first.

If the notification is for active navigation

Android Help explains that some notifications can be cleared only after their associated task is done. It gives a media-player notification as an example. That rule makes an active navigation task a useful first thing to check when a Maps notice resists dismissal, but it does not establish that every persistent Maps notification is caused by navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Maps and check whether it is still showing an active route or navigation session.
  2. If you have reached your destination, end or complete navigation in Maps using the controls shown for that session.
  3. Check whether the notification clears after the task ends. If it remains, read its text again and follow the steps for the matching alert type below.

If you still need turn-by-turn directions, the notification may be serving that active session. Turning off all Maps notifications is not the same as ending navigation and may hide other notices you rely on.

Do not treat the notification alone as proof that Maps has failed. The first useful question is whether the session is still active in the app. If it is, complete or end that task and then check the notification again. If navigation is not active—or the notice remains after the task ends—move on to its wording and category rather than repeating the same dismissal gesture.

Android Help’s rule is general: some notices can be cleared only when their associated task is done. It is a reason to check the task, not a guarantee that navigation explains every Maps notification that stays visible.

Turn off one unwanted Maps notification category

When the notice is an alert you do not want, Google Maps Help directs users to manage notification categories in Maps. This lets you target a type of alert instead of silencing every Maps notification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Open Settings, then Notifications.
  4. Find the category that matches the notification and turn that category off.
  5. Return to the notification and see whether the unwanted alert stops recurring.

Category names and available options can change. Choose the category that matches the notice’s actual wording rather than switching off unrelated categories. If you cannot find a matching category in Maps, Android’s app-notification controls may provide category-level options.

This is usually the most targeted approach when the alert is unwanted but you still want other Maps notifications. For example, if the text identifies a traffic update, look for the traffic-related category rather than turning off every category. If it describes a different prompt, use that wording to guide your choice. Do not guess based only on the fact that Maps is named in the notification.

If the category control is already off but the notice remains, check whether the notification represents an active task or a separate type of alert. The Maps categories and the categories shown by Android may not use identical labels, and available choices can vary. Avoid switching off several unrelated options at once: that makes it harder to tell which control affects the alert and may silence notifications you wanted to keep.

Manage Maps notifications in Android settings

Android can control notifications for an app as a whole or, on supported devices, for individual categories. The exact menu names and path depend on the phone and Android version, so there is no single path that applies to every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open your phone’s Settings and look for the app notification controls for Google Maps. The entry may be labeled Notifications or use a similar name.
  2. Choose Google Maps and review the available notification controls or categories.
  3. Turn off only the category that matches the unwanted notice, if category controls are available. Turning off notifications for the entire app is broader and may suppress other Maps alerts.

On supported phones, you can also touch and hold the notification and open its settings to reach the relevant controls. If the long-press option or category list is unavailable, use the phone’s Settings search or the Maps in-app Notifications menu instead. Android Help notes that notification settings vary by device.

Use the Android-level control when you need to manage the app’s notifications from the phone, or when you cannot locate the matching choice inside Maps. If Android shows individual categories, compare the category wording with the notification itself and change only the one that fits. If it offers only a single app-wide switch, understand that it affects more than the one alert you are trying to stop.

A long press is a shortcut on supported devices, not a required step. If nothing happens when you touch and hold the notice, or the phone does not offer category options, do not assume you have missed a universal menu. Try Settings search for Google Maps or use the in-app Notifications page. Labels and paths vary by phone, so the precise sequence may differ.

After changing a setting, observe whether the same alert returns. If it does, recheck the exact notification text and the category you changed. The symptom can look identical even when the notice is coming from a different category or an active task.

If the notification text points to these traffic updates, check the feature’s own notification setting in Maps before changing permissions. If you want to keep the feature working, confirm the required permissions rather than revoking them to clear an alert. If you do not want the traffic notification, turn off its matching notification category where available. The documented permissions are relevant to this particular feature; they are not a universal fix for every Maps notice that will not go away.

There are two separate decisions here: whether you want the traffic alert, and whether you want the feature to work. If you want the feature, the relevant setting and permissions need to remain in place. If you do not want the alert, use the matching notification control rather than changing permissions without checking what else the change affects.

Availability is regional: Google says the feature is offered only in certain countries and regions. If you cannot find it, that does not by itself show that the app is malfunctioning. The exact wording of the notification is still the best clue for deciding whether this specific control applies.

For Google Location Sharing notifications

If the alert concerns a person’s shared location, consider whether you need that location to keep updating before switching off its notification. Google Maps Help warns: “If you turn these notifications off, your shared location doesn’t refresh and can become inaccurate.” Turning off the notice can therefore affect the usefulness of the shared location, not just whether an alert appears.

If you need the shared location to remain current, leave the relevant notification control enabled. If you do not need it, use the location-sharing notification control that matches the alert rather than removing location permission as a general troubleshooting step.

This is an important tradeoff, not just a notification preference. If you are relying on the shared location, an alert disappearing may come at the cost of an accurate, refreshed location. If you are not relying on it, you can decide whether to turn off the related notification, but do so knowing the refresh consequence Google describes.

Do not apply that consequence to every Maps notification. It is specifically relevant to Google Location Sharing notifications. Likewise, do not assume that changing location permission is a harmless way to remove an unrelated traffic or navigation notice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the notification appears stuck after the task or category is handled

Use general Android app troubleshooting only after checking the notification type and its related task or category. Google’s general Android guidance recommends restarting the phone and updating the app first, followed, if needed, by force stopping the app or clearing its cache and data. These are general troubleshooting measures—not guaranteed fixes for a particular Maps notification.

  1. Restart the phone. Then check whether the notification returns and whether its associated Maps task is active.
  2. Update Google Maps. Install an available app update, then check the notification again.
  3. Force stop Maps if the problem persists. Use the app controls in Android settings; labels and paths vary by phone. Reopen Maps and check the notification.
  4. Clear the cache only if needed. Find the storage controls for Maps in Android settings and choose the cache option if your phone offers it.
  5. Treat clearing app data as a later step. Google’s general guidance includes clearing data, but this can erase app data. Read the phone’s confirmation prompt before proceeding and use this step only if you accept that consequence.

If the notice persists, collect the exact notification text, phone model, Android version, and whether navigation or location sharing is active. Those details help distinguish a continuing task from a notification-category or app problem. Google’s general troubleshooting guidance does not promise that restarting, updating, force stopping, or clearing storage will resolve every Maps notification.

Keep the order deliberate. Restarting and updating come before force stopping or changing stored app data. Force stop and cache controls are general app troubleshooting, not notification-specific switches. Clearing app data is the most consequential option in this list because it can erase app data; read the phone’s prompt rather than assuming it is equivalent to dismissing a notification.

If you are unsure whether a reset-like option is safe, stop before confirming it. The goal is to address the notification, not to erase app data unnecessarily. If the notice remains after the lower-impact steps, note the diagnostic details and reconsider whether it is tied to a task or a category you have not yet identified.

What not to do

  • Do not assume every persistent notice is a bug. Some notifications remain while the task they represent is still active.
  • Do not disable all Maps notifications before checking categories. Maps offers category controls, and a broad app-level change may silence alerts you want.
  • Do not revoke location permissions as a blanket fix. Google associates location and physical activity permissions with a particular traffic-update feature, not all Maps notifications.
  • Do not turn off location-sharing notifications without considering refreshes. Google warns that the shared location can stop refreshing and become inaccurate.
  • Do not treat clearing app data as a harmless toggle. It can erase app data and is a later troubleshooting option, not the first response to an unwanted alert.

Also avoid repeatedly dismissing a notice without checking what it says. A notification can be active because navigation has not ended, recurring because its category remains enabled, or tied to a location-sharing or traffic feature with specific consequences. Matching the fix to the notice is safer and more informative than making several unrelated changes at once.

When the notification still will not go away

If the basic checks do not resolve it, gather four details before trying more settings: the exact notification text, your phone model, your Android version, and whether navigation or location sharing is active. These details help separate an ongoing task from a category setting or a wider app problem. They are also more useful than describing the notice only as “stuck.”

There is no single guaranteed fix for every Google Maps notification that stays visible. The right next step depends on its content and context: end an active task, adjust the matching notification category, preserve permissions needed by a feature you want, or use general app troubleshooting if the app appears to be malfunctioning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I swipe away a Google Maps notification?

Some notifications cannot be cleared until the task they represent is done. If the notice is connected to active navigation, open Maps and check whether the route or session is still active. End or complete that task if appropriate, then check whether the notification clears. This is a useful first check, not proof that every persistent Maps notice is caused by navigation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a Google Maps notification come back after I dismiss it?

It may be a recurring alert whose notification category is still enabled, or it may relate to an active task or feature. Read the notification text, check the task, and then use the matching category in Maps or Android settings. Changing all Maps notifications is broader than necessary if you only want to stop one alert type.

Can I turn off just one type of Google Maps notification?

Yes. In Maps, tap your profile picture or initial, open Settings, then Notifications, and turn off the category that matches the alert. Android can also offer app-level or category-level controls. Labels and available categories vary, so use the notification wording to choose the relevant option.

Should I disable location permission to stop Maps notifications?

Not as a blanket fix. Google identifies location and physical activity permissions as requirements for the specific “Traffic updates when not using Maps” feature. They are not a universal remedy for every Maps notification. For location-sharing notifications, turning off the notification can stop location refreshes and make the shared location inaccurate.

What if I cannot find the notification setting on my phone?

Android’s menu names and paths vary by phone and Android version. Search Settings for Google Maps or app notifications, or touch and hold the notification to open its settings if your device supports that shortcut. You can also check Maps’ in-app Settings > Notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will turning off Google Location Sharing notifications affect the shared location?

It can. Google Maps Help warns that if you turn these notifications off, the shared location does not refresh and can become inaccurate. Keep the relevant control on if you need the shared location to stay current.

Why can’t I find “Traffic updates when not using Maps”?

Google says this feature is available only in certain countries and regions. It also depends on its specific notification setting, physical activity permission, and location permission. Check that the alert text actually refers to this feature before changing settings.

Should I clear Google Maps data to remove a stuck notification?

Treat clearing app data as a later troubleshooting step, not a notification toggle. Google’s general Android guidance also recommends restarting and updating first, then trying force stop or cache clearing if needed. Clearing data can erase app data, so read your phone’s confirmation prompt and proceed only if you accept that consequence.

What information should I have if the problem continues?

Note the exact notification text, phone model, Android version, and whether navigation or location sharing is active. Those details help distinguish an ongoing task from a category setting or an app problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Read the notification first, then match the fix to its type: end an active navigation task, turn off only the unwanted Maps category, or check the specific traffic or location-sharing controls. Android settings vary by device, and changing permissions or clearing app data can have consequences. If the notice persists after the relevant checks, record its exact wording, your phone model and Android version, and whether navigation or location sharing is active.
