“Google Maps not showing in Android Auto” can mean three different problems: the Maps icon is missing from the car launcher, Maps opens but cannot locate you or provide turn-by-turn directions, or Android Auto itself is not connecting to the vehicle screen. Put the car in Park before troubleshooting. Then follow the branch that matches what you see: re-enable Maps if its icon is absent, restore location access if navigation fails, or check compatibility, cables and the head unit if Android Auto will not connect.

Identify the failure before changing settings

Use this quick triage table. The first check matters because a missing launcher icon is an app-visibility problem, while a blank map or missing directions is usually a location, navigation, software, or connection problem.

What you see First checks Where to escalate
Google Maps is absent from the Android Auto launcher Open Maps on the phone, reconnect Android Auto, and check whether the app was disabled by battery settings. Phone maker if battery/app labels differ; Google support if Maps remains absent.
Maps opens, but cannot locate the car or start navigation Turn on phone Location and grant Maps location permission, including precise location when offered. Google Maps or Android Auto support after permissions are correct.
Android Auto itself does not appear or connect Verify phone, car, receiver and connection compatibility; enable Android Auto; restart the head unit; test the cable if wired. Vehicle maker or aftermarket receiver maker, including firmware support.
Turn-by-turn arrows or spoken guidance are missing while Maps otherwise works Compare the symptom with Google’s current known-issues listing before making hardware changes. Follow Google’s issue-specific guidance; a cable or permission change may not apply.

Start safely and confirm the basic setup

Park the vehicle, leave the infotainment system powered on, and allow the setup prompts time to appear before interacting with the display. Google’s setup guidance assumes the vehicle is in Park; typing a destination on the car screen also requires Park. Do not troubleshoot, pair a phone, or enter an address while driving.

Android Auto is built into supported Android phones as the technology that connects the phone to a compatible car display. In most cases you do not need to find or install a separate Android Auto app. The phone, vehicle or aftermarket receiver, and connection method must all be supported. Start with Google’s Android Auto setup and compatibility requirements, then check the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact model and trim.

Fix a missing Google Maps icon in the Android Auto launcher

If Android Auto connects and other apps appear but Maps is not listed, treat this as an app-launcher issue rather than a cable or GPS issue.

1. Open Maps on the phone

  1. While parked, unlock the phone and open Google Maps normally.
  2. Leave Maps open briefly, then reconnect Android Auto or close and reopen the Android Auto launcher on the car display.
  3. Look for Maps again in the launcher.

Google notes that an app can be temporarily disabled and therefore disappear from the launcher. Opening the app can re-enable it. The official instructions are in Find an app that is not on the app launcher.

2. Check automatic app-sleep settings

Some phones, particularly Samsung models, can automatically disable unused apps or place them to sleep. In Settings, search for Auto disable unused apps, Put unused apps to sleep, or a similarly named battery/app-management control. Remove Maps from that list, enable it again if it is marked disabled, and then reopen Maps.

Android menu names vary by manufacturer, Android version and regional software. If you cannot find the control, use the Settings search field or the phone maker’s support instructions rather than guessing at a universal path. Do not assume that buying a cable or clearing unrelated storage will restore an icon that the phone has disabled.

3. Reconnect after re-enabling Maps

  1. Close Maps and disconnect Android Auto.
  2. Start Android Auto again with the car still in Park.
  3. Open the car-screen app launcher and check whether the Maps icon is present.

If Maps remains absent while the phone can open it normally, record the phone model, Android version, Maps version and vehicle or receiver model before contacting support. Those details help determine whether the launcher, phone software or vehicle projection is at fault.

Restore location and navigation when Maps opens

If you can launch Maps but it cannot find your position, calculate a live route, or provide turn-by-turn guidance, check location services and permission before changing connection hardware.

1. Turn on phone Location

  1. On the phone, open Settings and turn on Location.
  2. Open the location-permission area—often Settings > Location > App permissions—and select Google Maps.
  3. Allow location access while using the app, or the more permissive option offered by your Android version when navigation requires it.
  4. If the phone offers a Use precise location switch for Maps, turn it on for the most accurate position.

The exact labels and path differ among Android releases. Google’s Manage location permissions for apps explains the available choices.

2. Understand what a permission denial changes

Google Maps can still show a route preview or a written directions list after location access is denied, but real-time features such as turn-by-turn navigation are disabled. That difference explains why a route may appear on the phone while the car display does not show live guidance. Google documents the behavior in How navigation data makes Maps better for everyone (Android).

3. Test Maps on the phone while parked

With Location enabled and permission granted, open Maps on the phone and verify that the blue position marker settles near the vehicle. Start a short test route while parked, then reconnect Android Auto. If the phone itself cannot obtain a position, the car projection is not the primary cause; continue with Android or device-maker support for the location problem.

When Android Auto itself will not connect

A missing Android Auto screen, a repeated connection prompt, or a car launcher with no projected apps points to compatibility or projection setup rather than a Google Maps-only fault.

Confirm the phone and wireless requirements

Google’s current requirements list Android 11 or higher and an active data plan for wired Android Auto. Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, plus a compatible car or stereo. The exact vehicle support is model-specific, so verify it with the manufacturer. Requirements can change as Android and vehicle firmware are updated; use Google’s Get started with Android Auto page for the current list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the phone is running a supported Android release.
  • Confirm mobile data is available when navigation needs online map data.
  • For wireless projection, confirm both the phone and receiver support wireless Android Auto and 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • For wired projection, confirm the car’s USB port is a data/projection port, not a charge-only port.
  • Check the vehicle or receiver maker’s compatibility and firmware notes.

Enable Android Auto in the car

  1. Open the infotainment system’s phone, projection or connectivity settings while parked.
  2. Make sure Android Auto is enabled and that the correct USB or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi connection is selected.
  3. Restart the infotainment system. Some head units require the vehicle to be switched off and locked briefly before a complete restart.
  4. Reconnect the phone and accept every permission or pairing prompt on both screens.

Labels differ substantially between vehicles and receivers. If Android Auto is enabled but the display still never offers projection, the receiver maker is the appropriate next support contact.

Forget old car pairings when connections are confused

If connection trouble follows the phone into a second vehicle, clear Android Auto’s stored car list and pair again:

  1. On the phone, open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto.
  2. Open Previously connected cars.
  3. Use the menu and choose Forget all cars.
  4. Reconnect to the intended vehicle and complete setup as if it were new.

Android versions may place these controls under a slightly different heading. Use Settings search for Android Auto if the path does not match.

Test the USB cable only for wired-connection symptoms

A cable is relevant when Android Auto will not connect over USB, disconnects repeatedly, or stopped working after previously working. It is not a general remedy for a Maps icon that is missing while wireless Android Auto and other apps work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the cable configuration Google recommends

  • Choose a high-quality USB data cable shorter than 3 feet (1 meter).
  • Do not use a USB hub, extension cable, adapter chain or loose connector.
  • Try the cable supplied with the phone when its connector fits the vehicle port.
  • A third-party cable can work if it supports data and meets USB Implementers Forum standards; Google suggests checking that certification is current within the past two years.
  • Match the phone connector to the car’s USB port and confirm that the port supports data, not charging only.

These recommendations come from Google’s My Android Auto app isn’t working. If Android Auto worked before and now fails only when wired, replacing a suspect cable is a reasonable targeted test. It does not establish that a cable can repair an app-only Maps display bug.

Isolate the cable, port and phone

  1. Disconnect hubs and extensions.
  2. Try a known-good short data cable.
  3. Try another compatible USB port in the vehicle if one is available.
  4. Inspect both connectors for dirt, bent contacts or looseness, without forcing the plug.
  5. If possible, test the phone in another compatible car or test another supported phone in the same car.

These comparisons identify whether the failure follows the cable, the phone, or the vehicle port. Do not buy multiple cables before confirming that the symptom is actually a wired projection failure.

Open navigation and enter a destination correctly

Sometimes “Maps is not showing” means the reader expects navigation to appear automatically after Android Auto connects. Google’s navigation procedure requires opening the navigation app from the car-screen launcher, then choosing a destination.

  1. On the Android Auto car screen, open the app launcher.
  2. Select Google Maps.
  3. Choose a saved place, recent destination, search result or on-screen map location.
  4. For typed input, keep the vehicle in Park and use the car-screen keyboard when it is offered.
  5. Start navigation and confirm that the route line, maneuver prompts and voice guidance are enabled.

See Google’s Get turn-by-turn navigation instructions for the current car-screen flow. If Maps launches and displays the map but turn prompts alone are absent, treat that as a navigation-display symptom rather than a missing-launcher-app problem.

Check Google’s current known issues before assuming a universal fix

Google’s Android Auto known-issues page, labeled updated September 10, 2026, listed “Google Maps turn-by-turn directions not showing” among recently addressed items with a date of June 12, 2026. Review the current entry at Android Auto Known Issues when your symptom matches that wording.

The listing confirms that Google has tracked a specific turn-by-turn display problem, but it does not show that every report of a missing Maps screen has the same cause. The available listing does not establish a universal workaround, affected version range, or guarantee that updating one app will resolve every case. Follow any instructions Google adds to the issue itself rather than applying a cable replacement or permission reset blindly.

Escalate with useful evidence

After the matching branch is complete, contact the right support channel instead of repeating unrelated resets.

Quick Recap

Contact the phone or Google support team when

  • Maps stays absent from the launcher after opening it and checking app-sleep controls.
  • Location is enabled and Maps has the required permission, but the phone cannot obtain a position or live navigation still fails.
  • The problem occurs across compatible vehicles and connection methods.
  • Your symptom matches a Google known-issue entry and no issue-specific workaround is published.

Contact the vehicle or receiver maker when

  • Android Auto is not listed in the vehicle’s projection settings.
  • The car’s USB port charges but never establishes data projection.
  • The issue began after an infotainment update or affects every supported phone in that vehicle.
  • An aftermarket receiver needs firmware or has model-specific pairing instructions.

Include these details

  • Phone model, Android version and Google Maps version.
  • Vehicle year, model and trim, or the exact aftermarket receiver model.
  • Wired or wireless connection, cable type and USB port used.
  • Whether other Android Auto apps appear and whether Maps works on the phone.
  • The exact symptom: missing icon, blank map, no position, no route, no arrows, no voice prompts, or no Android Auto connection.
  • What changed immediately before the failure, such as a phone, Maps, Android or infotainment update.

A concise decision checklist

  1. Park the car and leave the infotainment system on.
  2. Classify the failure as missing Maps icon, navigation/location failure, turn-by-turn display failure, or total Android Auto connection failure.
  3. For a missing icon, open Maps and check whether the phone disabled it through unused-app settings.
  4. For navigation failure, enable Location, grant Maps permission and enable precise location when available.
  5. For total connection failure, verify Android and vehicle compatibility, enable projection and restart the head unit.
  6. For wired-only failure, use a short, high-quality data cable without hubs or extensions and test the vehicle port.
  7. Forget previous cars and pair again when the phone has stale vehicle entries.
  8. Compare a matching turn-by-turn symptom with Google’s current known-issues listing before escalating.
