Start by identifying which Discover feed is wrong: the Google app, Google.com on a phone, a device’s swipe-right home panel, or Chrome for Android’s New Tab page. Then check the matching activity and personalization settings, followed and hidden interests, language and location, and refresh controls. Google does not guarantee that any single change will produce a particular feed immediately, and its menu names are currently being updated.
First, identify the Discover feed you are using
“Google Discover” is not one identical screen. It can appear in several places, and each surface has different controls:

Google describes Discover as updates for interests such as a sports team or news site without requiring a search. Its official Discover customization guide covers the Google app and Google.com experience. Chrome’s New Tab suggestions are documented separately in Chrome Help.

Fix relevance in the Google app or Google.com
1. Review activity and recommendation settings
Google’s current instructions direct you to the Google app’s account and Search settings. Open the Google app, tap your profile picture, choose Settings, then look for Search Services History. Next open Search personalization and check Personalized recommendations. These controls determine whether saved account activity can be used to tailor recommendations.

Google is changing its Search services settings, so the exact labels may not match your screen. Older or localized help pages may call the controls Web & App Activity and Personal results. If you cannot find the newer names, open your Google Account’s privacy and data controls and the current Google app settings rather than assuming that a missing label indicates a broken feed. The documented starting point is Google’s Discover customization help.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Google Account whose activity and interests you expect Discover to use.
- Check whether Search Services History or its equivalent is paused. A paused history gives Google less activity to use for recommendations.
- Verify that Personalized recommendations (or the current equivalent) is enabled if you want activity-based suggestions.
- Remember that changing a setting is a check, not a guarantee of a particular article mix or an immediate result; Google does not publish a fixed propagation time.
2. Correct followed interests
In the Google app, open your profile menu and Settings, then find Personalization or Interests. Review the Following list. Unfollow topics that no longer describe what you want to read. If you search for a subject in Google, Google may offer a Follow control so that Discover can provide updates for it.
Followed interests are only one input. Discover also considers account activity, device and other Google-product information, and location signals, so following one topic will not turn the entire feed into a single-topic list.
3. Undo accidental “Not interested” choices
When a card disappears after you use its three-dot or More menu, it may have been marked as a topic you do not want or as a source you no longer wish to see. Return to the Google app’s Personalization or Interests area and open the Not interested or Hidden section. Restore topics and publishers that you still want.
On an individual card, use the More menu to mark a topic as not interesting or stop showing content from that source. Google notes that some of these controls are not available in every country or language. If the option is absent, use the interests-management screen instead of repeatedly dismissing cards.
4. Check language filters
Discover can hide stories written in a language you previously excluded. In the Discover settings, review hidden languages and restore any that you want to read. Language controls vary by interface and region, so look for wording such as Languages, Manage interests or Hidden rather than relying on one universal path.
A language mismatch can make a feed look irrelevant even when the topics are correct. Check this before repeatedly marking individual stories as unwanted, because repeated dismissals can suppress a subject you actually care about.

5. Check location context
Google says some Discover updates use your home location. If that location is unavailable, Google may estimate location from other signals, including an IP address. Review the location context available to your Google Account and device, and check any location permission or account setting that you intentionally changed.
Location is not the only explanation for geographically wrong stories. Google also lists activity, device information and information from other Google products as inputs. Correcting location may improve local coverage, but it will not override every interest or language setting.
6. Make sure Discover is not switched off
If the entire feed disappeared, verify the master switch before changing personalization. In the Google app, open your profile menu, choose Settings, then General and the Discover switch where it appears. Google documents the switch in Turn off Discover; the same page explains how to turn it back on.
For Google.com on a phone, supported regions may show a separate Show Discover on home page setting. This is distinct from the Google app switch. If you use a mobile browser, check the Google.com setting rather than changing only the app.

Google lists Data Saver as a setting that can make Discover refresh less often. In the Google app, open your profile menu, choose Settings, then find the Data Saver option under the app’s current settings categories. If it is enabled, expect less frequent updates; disabling it may allow more regular refreshes, subject to your device’s data plan and system restrictions. Google’s settings reference is Change your Google app settings.
Fix Chrome for Android’s separate suggested-articles feed
Chrome’s New Tab page can show a Discover-like list that is separate from the Google app feed. Google says that, when you are signed in and depending on your settings, suggested articles can be based on recent Web & App Activity and interactions such as tapping an article or scrolling past it. That means Chrome behavior may differ even when the Google app looks well personalized.
- Open Chrome on Android and create a New Tab page.
- Scroll to the suggested-articles section.
- Pull down on the New Tab page to refresh the list.
- Use an article’s More menu to indicate that a topic or source is unwanted, or to manage interest controls when those options are shown.
- If suggestions remain unrelated, check the signed-in Chrome account and the account’s recent Web & App Activity. Chrome’s documented controls are in Customize your New Tab page in Chrome.
Do not use Chrome’s refresh behavior as a test of the Google app’s feed. They are different surfaces with different interaction signals and controls.

Separate stale content from wrong personalization
When the feed is merely stale
- Pull down to refresh Chrome’s Android New Tab page.
- Check whether Data Saver is limiting Google app refreshes.
- Confirm that Discover itself has not been disabled.
- Check your connection and device-level data restrictions if every card is old, not just one subject.
When the feed is consistently off-topic
- Review Search Services History or the current Web & App Activity equivalent.
- Verify Personalized recommendations or its current label.
- Inspect Following, Not interested and Hidden lists.
- Check language and location context.
When only one publisher or topic is missing
Look first in the hidden or Not interested lists. A source-level block can remove every card from that publisher while leaving the rest of Discover unchanged. Restore it there, then follow the topic again if Google offers a Follow control.

Understand what Discover can and cannot promise
Google says Discover uses information from your device and other Google products, data stored in your account, activity settings and location signals. It does not publish a complete individual-feed ranking formula in the cited help pages. Consequently, correcting one setting may change the mix without making a particular publisher, topic or story appear.
The official documentation also does not specify a guaranteed delay between a preference change and a visible feed change. Treat each adjustment as a controlled check: change one relevant setting, refresh the appropriate surface, and then evaluate whether the symptom changed. Avoid assuming that no immediate change means the setting failed.
Google’s Discover help currently warns that Search settings are being updated. Menu names, placement and availability can therefore differ by app version, country, language and account. A control described as Web & App Activity in older guidance may appear under Search Services History or another current label.
Other Discover settings worth checking
The Discover settings area can include controls for weather and location, video, notifications, ads and activity, in addition to interests and language. These options do not expose a secret ranking formula, but they can explain why the feed looks different from another device or account. Review only the setting related to the symptom you are seeing; changing every option at once makes it harder to tell which adjustment mattered.

For example, a feed that contains the right subjects but too many videos is a different problem from a feed showing the wrong country. Look for the video or content-preference control in the current interface rather than marking every video as irrelevant. Likewise, notification preferences affect alerts about Discover content, not necessarily which cards are eligible to appear in the feed.
Common troubleshooting pitfalls
- Fixing the wrong surface: Changing Google app interests will not necessarily change Chrome’s New Tab suggestions, and refreshing Chrome will not prove that the Google app is healthy.
- Using the wrong account: A phone can have several Google accounts. Verify the profile picture in the app and the signed-in account in Chrome before auditing activity.
- Assuming an old menu is universal: Search Services History and Personalized recommendations are current labels in Google’s surfaced help, while Web & App Activity and Personal results may appear in older or localized instructions.
- Overusing “Not interested”: Dismissing individual cards can hide a topic or publisher you actually want. Restore it from Hidden or Not interested instead of continuing to train the feed in the wrong direction.
- Expecting instant propagation: Google does not state a fixed time for a preference to affect recommendations. Refresh the matching surface, but do not treat an unchanged first screen as proof that the setting was ignored.
- Confusing availability with failure: Some controls vary by country and language. A missing option may reflect regional availability rather than a malfunction.
A controlled test for a stubborn feed
If several symptoms overlap, test them in an order that preserves a clear cause-and-effect trail. First record the surface, account and symptom. Next confirm that Discover is enabled. Then change one relevant activity or recommendation setting, refresh the same surface, and compare the next cards. If the issue is a missing publisher, inspect Hidden and Not interested before changing location or language. If the issue is old content everywhere, check Data Saver and the appropriate refresh action first.

This approach is deliberately modest: Google’s help pages document inputs and controls, not a user-visible scoring formula. A controlled test can identify a blocked topic, disabled switch or stale surface, but it cannot force a particular article into the feed.

That wording comes from Google Search Help’s Discover customization documentation. Chrome Help describes its separate suggestions this way:
“If you’re signed in to Chrome, depending on your settings, suggested articles are based on your recent Web & App activity and your interactions with the suggested articles, like when you tap on or scroll past an article.”
The distinction matters: the Google app and Chrome can use overlapping account information while still presenting separate feeds with different controls.

- Name the surface. Decide whether the problem is in the Google app, Google.com, a home-screen panel or Chrome’s Android New Tab page.
- Check that the feed is enabled. Restore the Discover switch, and for Google.com check “Show Discover on home page” where supported.
- Verify the account. Make sure the app or Chrome is signed in to the account whose interests and activity you intend to use.
- Review activity controls. Open Search Services History and Personalized recommendations, or the current Web & App Activity and Personal results equivalents.
- Audit interests. Remove outdated followed topics and restore wanted entries from Not interested or Hidden.
- Correct language and location. Restore hidden languages and check home-location and device-location context.
- Address refresh limits. Check Data Saver in the Google app; pull down to refresh Chrome’s New Tab page.
- Refresh the matching surface. Do not judge Chrome’s feed by the Google app’s cards or vice versa.
- Allow for undocumented timing. Google gives no fixed preference-propagation time or guaranteed ranking result, so evaluate the feed after the relevant surface has refreshed rather than expecting an instant, predetermined change.
When a setting is unavailable
Some controls are restricted by country or language, and Google’s interface is being revised. If a documented option is missing:

- Look under current names such as Personalization, Interests, Search Services History and Personalized recommendations.
- Use the account’s privacy and data controls for activity settings that are no longer exposed under an older menu name.
- Do not infer that the feed is malfunctioning solely because an older instruction does not match your screen.
These steps address the documented controls Google exposes. They cannot force a specific story, restore a publisher that has no eligible current content, or reveal an unpublished ranking rule.

Why did Google Discover suddenly stop showing stories I care about?

Yes. Google says Data Saver can make Discover refresh less often. Check the Google app’s current Data Saver setting, while recognizing that device and network restrictions can also affect updates.
How long does it take for Discover preference changes to work?
Google’s official help does not publish a guaranteed propagation time. Refresh the matching feed and assess the symptom after the relevant surface updates, but do not expect a fixed immediate result.
Why am I seeing stories from the wrong country or language?
Review hidden-language controls and the location context available to your account and device. Google may use your home location or estimate location from signals such as an IP address, alongside activity and device information.
What if the Discover feed disappeared completely?
