Google Play Books does not have one universal sync switch. First identify what is failing: the book is missing from the library, your reading position is stale, an uploaded PDF or EPUB is unavailable, or notes and highlights are absent. Then check the Google Account and connection on every device, refresh Play Books, and manually sync the account on Android. More disruptive actions—clearing app storage, reinstalling, or clearing Google Play services data—belong at the end because they remove local downloads or saved device information.
The steps below apply to books purchased or rented through Google Play and to PDFs or EPUBs uploaded to Play Books. Menu names can vary slightly by Android manufacturer and version.
Identify exactly what is not syncing
Different symptoms have different causes. Use this table before changing settings.

Do not assume that a failure on one phone proves a service-wide outage. Reproducing the problem in the web reader or on a second device is a useful way to separate an account problem from a local app problem.

Check the account and internet connection first
Confirm the owning Google Account
On each phone, tablet, or computer, open Play Books and inspect the profile avatar or account selector. Select the same Google Account that bought or rented the title, or that was used to upload the document. A personal and work account can be signed in on the same device, and Play content remains associated with the account that owns it rather than with the hardware.
For a family member’s device, do not infer ownership from the device’s primary account. A title purchased under another account will not automatically appear in this account’s library. Switch to the owning account, then close and reopen Play Books.
Verify a live connection
Open a web page or another network-dependent app while connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data. Turn off airplane mode and, if necessary, try the other connection type. A book downloaded for offline reading remains usable without a connection, but Play Books cannot retrieve a new library entry, reading position, or annotation state while the device is offline.
If the device uses a restricted, metered, school, or workplace network, test briefly on a different trusted network. Do not delete an offline download merely because it is not updating; first restore connectivity and refresh the app.
Refresh Play Books and manually sync Android
Google’s documented Android sequence starts with low-risk actions. Perform it in order and check the affected title after each step.

- Update Play Books. Open Google Play Store, search for Google Play Books, and install an available update. An older app build can fail to process current account data.
- Refresh the Home screen. Open Play Books, go to Home, and pull down below the search bar until the refresh indicator appears. Wait for it to finish, then search the library again.
- Close and reopen the app. Leave Play Books, remove it from the recent-apps view, and launch it again. This clears a stuck screen without deleting books.
- Manually sync the Google Account. In Android Settings, go to About > Google Account > Account sync. Choose the relevant account if Android asks, then select More > Sync now. On some phones the Account sync page is under Passwords and accounts or Accounts; use the equivalent account-sync control.
- Check Play Books again. Open the library, select the title, and allow time for its cover, download status, and last position to update.
Manual sync refreshes data for Google apps on the selected account, including apps whose automatic sync setting is off. It is broader than a Play Books-only refresh, so use the account that actually owns the book.
Restart if the refresh did not work
Restart the phone or tablet after the app update and account sync. Then repeat one library check. A restart can release a stalled local process, but it does not correct a wrong account or a publisher download limit.
When a purchased or rented book is missing
Check the purchase or rental account
Open the account menu in Play Books and switch through any signed-in accounts until the title appears. If you cannot find it, review the purchase or rental confirmation in the account that paid for it. A rental may also disappear when its rental period ends; changing devices does not extend that period.
Understand publisher download limits
Google says most purchased books allow simultaneous downloads on typically three to five devices, but the exact limit is set by the publisher. Textbooks commonly allow only one device. The limit concerns downloaded copies, not necessarily ownership of the book in your library.
If you have reached the limit, open Play Books on a device you no longer use, find the title, and remove its downloaded copy. Removing a download frees local-device access; it is different from deleting the title from your library or account. After removing the old copy, return to the current device and download the book again. If the publisher permits only one textbook download, remove the old copy before attempting the new one.

Check storage and download state
A title can be visible but fail to download when the device is nearly full. Check Android Settings > Storage and make space before retrying. Keep Play Books open on a stable connection until the download indicator completes. Do not repeatedly tap download while the first request is still pending.
Uploaded PDFs and EPUBs across devices
Google Play Help states that PDF and EPUB files uploaded to Play Books can be read on any device where you sign in to the owning account. This is cloud library access, not an automatic copy of a file stored only in a phone’s Downloads folder.
Upload from a computer
- Open the Play Books library in a browser while signed in to the owning Google Account.
- Choose Upload files and select the PDF or EPUB.
- Wait for the upload to finish before closing the browser or testing another device.
- On the phone or tablet, open Play Books on the same account and refresh Home.
Upload from Android
For PDFs, Play Books may require PDF uploading to be enabled in its settings. Once enabled, use the Android Files app’s share or open-with action and choose Play Books. EPUB files can also be uploaded from Files or Gmail. If the document never appears, verify that the upload completed and that the receiving device is using the same account; a file still sitting in local storage has not been added to the Play Books library.
Test the web library
If an uploaded title appears in the browser library but not in the Android app, the account upload is intact and the local app needs refreshing or repair. If it is absent in both places, revisit the account and upload steps rather than clearing app data.
Reading position and offline behavior
Reading-position synchronization requires the reader to exchange state with Google. After reading offline, leave the book open briefly on a connection so the latest position can upload. On the second device, connect it, refresh Play Books, and reopen the title from the library instead of an old shortcut or downloaded file.

Compare the same title in the web reader or, where available, the Play Books app on an iPhone or iPad. If the position is current elsewhere but stale on one Android device, the issue is local to that app or device. If every reader shows the old position, confirm the account and connection before attempting advanced repairs.

Check whether the file type is supported
Google’s current upload guidance says cross-device bookmarks, highlights, and notes are supported for uploaded PDFs and EPUBs. For PDF files, that annotation support applies to PDFs uploaded after January 20, 2026. A PDF uploaded on or before that date may still be readable across devices without providing the same annotation synchronization.
This date applies to the upload, not the date on which you made a highlight. Re-uploading an older PDF creates a new upload event, but keep the original file and any existing annotations available before doing so; re-uploading does not guarantee that old marks will be converted.
Distinguish Drive note saving from in-reader sync
Play Books includes a Save notes, highlights and bookmarks option that creates a book-specific notes document in Google Drive. It is a separate record from the visual annotation layer in the reader. Google’s help guidance says that after enabling the option, an older annotation may require you to create a new note, highlight, or bookmark before a document containing that book’s notes is created.

Therefore, enabling Drive saving is not a promise that every missing mark will instantly reappear in every reader view. Check the file type and PDF upload date first, then confirm the account and app state. If a supported annotation still fails on multiple devices, contact Google Play Books Help and specify the file type, PDF upload date where relevant, account type, and the exact devices or readers that disagree.

Advanced Android recovery: cache, storage, and reinstall
Use these actions only after updating, refreshing, manually syncing, restarting, and checking the account. Record which books are downloaded for offline use before proceeding.
Clear the Play Books cache
- Open Android Settings and go to Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Select Google Play Books.
- Open Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache, then launch Play Books and test the title.
Clearing cache removes temporary files, not the account’s cloud library. Android labels differ, so do not choose Clear storage accidentally if you only intend to clear temporary data.
Clear Play Books storage or reinstall
If cache clearing does not help, Google lists clearing Play Books storage or reinstalling the app as later options. Clearing storage signs you out and removes local app data. You will need to sign in again and download books for offline use again. Reinstalling has the same practical consequence for local downloads, so use a reliable connection and confirm you know the owning account before starting.
Treat Google Play services data as a last resort
Google Play services is separate from the Play Store and Play Books. Keep it updated, but do not begin an ordinary sync repair by clearing its data. Google warns that clearing Play services data can remove information saved on the device, including Google Pay credentials, and may require you to authenticate the Google Account again. Try the less disruptive Play Books steps first; use this option only when broader Google-account functions are also failing and you are prepared to restore affected credentials.
Use a second reader to isolate the fault
A controlled comparison prevents unnecessary deletion.
- On the affected device, confirm the account and connection.
- Open the same title in the Play Books web reader, if it is available for that content, or on another signed-in device.
- Check whether the library entry, reading position, and annotations each agree.
- If only one device is wrong, update, refresh, restart, and then clear that device’s Play Books cache.
- If all readers are wrong, return to ownership, upload status, publisher download limits, file type, and the January 20, 2026 PDF annotation cutoff.
When contacting Google Play Books Help, include the account category (purchased, rented, or uploaded), the file type, the affected devices and operating systems, whether the web reader shows the same state, and which element is missing. That information distinguishes a library-access problem from a position or annotation problem.
Quick decision checklist
- Wrong or missing library: select the purchasing or uploading account, check the connection, and investigate publisher download limits.
- Old reading position: reconnect, refresh Home, manually sync the account, restart, and compare with another reader.
- Missing uploaded file: confirm the upload completed, enable PDF uploading when Android requests it, and test the web library.
- Missing annotations: verify PDF or EPUB support, check whether a PDF was uploaded after January 20, 2026, and treat Drive note saving as a separate feature.
- Only after those checks fail: clear Play Books cache, then consider storage clearing or reinstalling with the understanding that offline downloads must be restored.
The safest fix is usually account correction plus a networked refresh. Destructive Android resets are justified only when the problem remains isolated to the local app after the cloud library and another reader show that the account data is present.
