To fix ghosting on an LED TV, first identify what you see: moving trails, a doubled picture, or a faint image that remains after content changes. Those symptoms can have different causes, so start by comparing picture settings and sources before buying a cable or arranging a repair.
Identify which kind of ghosting you have
- Motion trails: Faint smears or trails follow moving objects, especially in fast scenes. Motion processing or the TV’s blur characteristics may be involved. TCL describes motion ghosting as faint trails behind moving objects.
- Double image: The picture appears duplicated, continuously or on a particular channel or input. The signal, source device, or connection may be responsible. LG’s double-image guidance recommends checking the picture and signal.
- Lingering mark: A logo, game graphic, or other shape remains faintly visible after you change content. This may be temporary image retention; a mark that persists much longer can indicate burn-in or another display problem. LG distinguishes image retention from longer-lasting burn-in.
Fix trails behind moving objects
Use the same fast-moving scene as you test settings, changing one thing at a time. Menu labels and available features vary by TV model; check the manual if the names below do not appear.
- Try a different picture mode. Compare the result in the mode intended for the content, such as Movie or Standard, rather than assuming one mode suits every use.
- Open the picture or motion settings and look for controls such as Blur Reduction, Judder Reduction, Motion Clarity, LED Motion, or motion processing. The exact names depend on the model.
- For fast sports, TCL suggests increasing Blur Reduction or enabling Motion Clarity or LED Motion if available. LED Motion may improve clarity but slightly dim the picture. If movement looks unnaturally smooth, reduce or disable motion processing instead. See TCL’s model-sensitive motion guidance.
- For a console or PC, test Game Mode on the input you use for gaming. It prioritizes responsiveness and can change motion processing. For movies or sports on that same input, compare Movie or Standard with Game Mode off if you want more motion processing.
Some TVs store picture settings separately for each HDMI input, so check the settings while viewing the input that shows the problem.

Compare the same content, where possible, in a built-in TV app and on the external box, console, PC, or set-top box. Also try a different app, channel, or source. If the built-in apps look normal but one external device does not, focus on that device’s output and connection before changing the TV’s panel-related settings.

- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends and try another HDMI port.
- Check that the device’s output resolution and refresh rate are supported by both the TV and source.
- If the issue is limited to that HDMI connection and the cable’s capability is in question, use a High Speed or Ultra High Speed HDMI cable appropriate for the equipment. TCL recommends these cable categories for 4K and higher frame rates, depending on the devices. A cable replacement is not an established fix for trails caused by the TV’s panel or image processing. Diagnose a double image
If the picture is doubled, use the TV’s built-in picture diagnostic if your model offers one. On supported LG TVs, run Picture Test from the Support settings. A normal test image points toward the broadcast signal or service; an abnormal test image is a reason to contact LG support. The menu path varies by webOS generation, so follow the instructions for your model rather than relying on a single universal path. LG provides model-generation-specific Picture Test guidance.
If the test looks normal, check whether the problem occurs on only one channel, app, or connected device. A symptom limited to one source is more consistent with that source or its signal than with a TV-wide picture fault.

Handle a lingering image safely
Switch to varied content and avoid leaving static graphics—such as logos or game HUDs—on screen for extended periods. Panasonic notes that image retention can occasionally occur on LCD/LED displays and identifies static content and high brightness or contrast among possible contributing factors. If the mark persists after varied content, consult the TV maker or an authorized repair service. Panasonic’s guidance explains image retention on LCD/LED displays.

Reset settings or contact support
If you have changed many picture controls and cannot tell which affected the image, reset the picture settings and adjust them gradually. You can also power-cycle the TV and check for an available software update, as TCL recommends in its troubleshooting guidance.
Contact the TV manufacturer or an authorized repair service if a built-in picture test shows the defect, a double image remains across sources, or a lingering mark persists after normal content changes and any maintenance explicitly recommended for your model. Do not assume a cable or motion setting can correct a panel-level fault.
