When Fortnite crashes, stutters, or suddenly feels slow, first check whether Epic reports a service problem, then identify whether you are seeing a network issue or a PC/console performance problem. For network symptoms, compare in-match ping and packet loss with a connection test; for crashes and visual freezes, follow the troubleshooting path for your platform instead of changing network settings at random.
1. Check Fortnite’s service status and the exact error
Before changing your setup, check Epic Games Server Status and the Fortnite Community Issues/Status channels referenced in Epic’s console troubleshooting guide. A service-wide incident will not be fixed by reinstalling your local game.
If Fortnite displays an error code or message, search that exact wording in Epic Games Help. An error-specific fix may be more relevant than general crash steps.

2. Tell network lag apart from frame-rate drops or crashes
Ping is round-trip network latency measured in milliseconds. A high or changing ping can make actions feel delayed, but stuttering, freezes, black screens, and crashes can instead point to game files, graphics settings, drivers, or the device itself. A match may use a different server from another match, and congestion or ISP routing can change latency.

Turn on Fortnite’s network display
- Open Settings in Fortnite, then select the Game UI tab.
- Find Net Debug Stats, turn it on, and apply the change.
- In a match, check ping and packet loss while the problem is happening. Epic’s display uses a solid white line for no packet loss and red marks for lost packets.
Do not judge the connection by average ping alone. Epic says consistently more than about 1% packet loss can cause in-game problems; this is its troubleshooting rule of thumb, not an independently established universal threshold. Jitter is also relevant: a large gap between minimum and maximum latency indicates a less consistent connection.
Compare with an endpoint test, but understand its limits
Epic’s lag and connectivity guide provides ping tests for its subregion endpoints. Its Windows example is ping ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com -n 50; on macOS, the example is ping -c 50 ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com. Replace the Virginia endpoint with one appropriate to your region. The sample sends 50 packets. Look at the average, packet loss, and spread between minimum and maximum results.

- Tri-band 2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz; latest WiFi 6E supports 8-streams on tri-band simultaneously, up to 6.6Gbps speed
- AI QoS; satisfies all users' needs by automatically prioritizing data packets
- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
This is a diagnostic comparison, not a perfect simulation of a match: the endpoint test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP, and some networks prioritize ICMP differently. A clean result at the endpoint does not prove that gameplay traffic is unaffected.

Try the network changes that match your setup, then retest during a match. If the issue mostly occurs when other people are using the connection, run the test under that same household load: idle tests can conceal congestion, and uploads can be especially disruptive on connections with limited upload capacity.

- New-Gen WiFi Standard – WiFi 6(802.11ax) standard supporting MU-MIMO and OFDMA technology for better efficiency and throughput.Antenna : External antenna x 4. Processor : Dual-core (4 VPE). Power Supply : AC Input : 110V~240V(50~60Hz), DC Output : 12 V with max. 1.5A current.
- Ultra-fast WiFi Speed – RT-AX1800S supports 1024-QAM for dramatically faster wireless connections
- Increase Capacity and Efficiency – Supporting not only MU-MIMO but also OFDMA technique to efficiently allocate channels, communicate with multiple devices simultaneously
- 5 Gigabit ports – One Gigabit WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports, 10X faster than 100–Base T Ethernet.
- Commercial-grade Security Anywhere – Protect your home network with AiProtection Classic, powered by Trend Micro. And when away from home, ASUS Instant Guard gives you a one-click secure VPN.
- Restart the modem and router.
- Use wired Ethernet if your device and router can be connected; it can avoid Wi-Fi signal and interference issues, though it cannot fix an ISP routing problem or Epic service issue.
- Pause large downloads, uploads, and video streams during play, or identify which activity causes the problem.
- If using Wi-Fi, improve the router’s placement and test both bands where available. Epic describes 2.4 GHz as longer-range but potentially more crowded, while 5 GHz can be faster but has shorter range.
- Check for router firmware updates. If your router supports QoS, Smart Queue, or a gaming mode, you can test whether enabling it helps; availability and results depend on the router and network.
Choose a Fortnite subregion deliberately
Fortnite’s Subregion Preference can make matchmaking favor a preferred subregion more often. Epic cautions that this may increase queue times and reduce match quality. Because a region can include multiple datacenters and matches may use different servers, do not treat one match’s ping as a permanent baseline.
When to contact your ISP or Epic
If latency remains high, give your ISP the endpoint you tested, the result, and your in-game ping. Explain that the endpoint check uses ICMP but Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. Epic Games Support notes that a sudden ping increase is usually caused by how an ISP routes traffic; that is a general troubleshooting observation, not a diagnosis of every individual connection. If the issue continues after you contact the ISP, contact Epic Games Support and specify the Fortnite experience involved, such as Ranked or Reload.

4. Fix Fortnite crashes and performance problems on PC
Epic’s PC technical-issues guide lays out a staged approach. Start with the error-specific help and basic checks; do not jump straight to reinstalling.
- Search for the exact error message or code in Epic Games Help.
- Check that the PC meets Fortnite’s minimum requirements.
- Verify Fortnite’s game files in the Epic Games Launcher.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache.
- Update the graphics driver.
- If the problem remains, continue through Epic’s listed steps: launch as administrator, consider reinstalling the launcher or game, try a different drive, check background applications, and check for drive errors. Contact Epic Support if these steps do not resolve it.
For freezes, black screens, or visual problems
Epic’s graphics troubleshooting guide suggests checking requirements, setting the quality preset to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%, then updating graphics drivers. If the problem improves, raise quality settings gradually so you can identify which change brings it back. In competitive modes, Fortnite restricts play to a 16:9 aspect ratio, so side bars in those modes are expected behavior rather than a fault.

5. Troubleshoot Fortnite on a console
Epic’s console troubleshooting guide covers Fortnite updates, platform updates, clearing the platform cache, reinstalling Fortnite, and power cycling the console using the linked instructions for the relevant platform. Try the less disruptive checks first and reinstall only if earlier steps do not help. Epic notes that its console troubleshooting is limited because consoles are closed platforms; unresolved platform-specific issues may need PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo support.
