If File Explorer is crashing, freezing, or failing to open in Windows 11, start by checking for Windows updates and restarting the PC. If the problem continues, Microsoft documents repairing Windows system files with DISM followed by System File Checker (SFC). If the issue began after an update, consider Microsoft’s update-removal guidance; reserve broader recovery options for later and back up important files first.
Microsoft’s File Explorer-specific support page directly addresses Explorer that “won’t open or start.” It recommends checking for updates and restarting, and says resetting the PC might help if Explorer still will not start. Those recommendations are useful starting points, but they do not amount to ten independently verified fixes for every crash or freeze.

1. Check for Windows updates
Microsoft’s guidance for File Explorer that will not open or start begins with Windows Update. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install any available updates. Follow any restart prompt. Updates may address Windows problems, but Microsoft does not promise that an update will fix every Explorer crash or freeze.
2. Restart the PC
Restart Windows after checking for updates, even if the system has not explicitly asked you to restart. Microsoft notes that restarting can ensure pending updates are installed. This is a basic, low-disruption check; if Explorer continues to fail, move on rather than repeatedly restarting.

3. Repair Windows system files with DISM and SFC
If the symptoms persist, Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance provides a built-in repair sequence for missing or corrupted Windows system files. Open Command Prompt as administrator. Run the DISM command first, wait for it to finish, then run SFC:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
Keep the Command Prompt window open until each command completes. In particular, do not close it while SFC is verifying files. Microsoft says DISM normally uses Windows Update as its source for repair files, and instructs users to run DISM before System File Checker. This process targets Windows system-file problems; it is not a guaranteed fix for every cause of File Explorer instability.
4. If the issue followed a Windows update, consider uninstalling that update
Think about when the crashes or freezes began. If they started after a Windows update, Microsoft’s recovery guidance says uninstalling that update might fix the issue. Use the Windows recovery instructions that apply to your version and situation: available choices can differ by Windows version and scenario. Do not remove an update solely because it is recent if the timing does not fit the problem.

5. Back up important files before recovery
Before using a recovery option that may affect your data, make a backup of important files. Microsoft recommends backing up because some recovery choices can cause data loss. Suitable storage you already have is fine; a USB drive is one possible way to copy files, not a File Explorer repair product or a required purchase.

6. Choose the least disruptive suitable recovery option
Microsoft advises trying the least disruptive recovery option first. The choices below are not interchangeable: the right one depends on whether a recent update appears responsible, what Windows version you have, and how much disruption is acceptable.
| Option | When it may fit | Effect and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a recent Windows update | The problem began after an update. | Microsoft says removing the update might help. Exact availability depends on Windows version and scenario; consult Microsoft’s recovery guidance. The cited guidance does not state a universal effect on personal files, apps, or settings. |
| Reinstall the current Windows version | A Windows repair/reinstall option is available and simpler measures have not resolved the issue. | Microsoft lists an option to reinstall the current version without affecting files, apps, or settings for Windows 11 version 22H2 or later. Availability is version-dependent. |
| Reset the PC | Explorer still will not start after the earlier steps, and a less disruptive suitable option has not solved the problem. | Microsoft’s File Explorer page says a PC reset might help. Reset choices can have different effects; back up important files and review the applicable recovery instructions before proceeding. |
Microsoft’s File Explorer page discusses startup failure, while its recovery guidance covers broader Windows recovery scenarios. A crash or freeze is not necessarily the same problem as Explorer failing to start, so none of these recovery choices should be treated as a guaranteed Explorer-specific cure.
When these steps do not resolve the problem
The cited Microsoft guidance supports updates, restarting, system-file repair, and scenario-appropriate recovery, but does not establish ten separate fixes for Explorer crashes and freezes. If the issue remains, use Microsoft Support’s instructions for your specific symptom and Windows version rather than repeating the same actions under different names or escalating straight to a reset.
