Error 0x80070490 does not point to one universal Windows 11 Home problem. Microsoft labels it ERROR_NOT_FOUND and documents it in a specific Windows Update driver-installation scenario; a Microsoft Store or Xbox failure may have a different cause. First identify which app or update shows the code, then use the matching steps below rather than applying a registry fix blindly.
First identify where the error appears
Note the name of the app, update, or installer and the point at which the failure occurs. If Windows Update is involved, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and record the failed update or KB number. Microsoft recommends using the specific error shown in Update history to guide troubleshooting: Windows upgrade and installation error guidance.
The same code can appear in different contexts. Microsoft’s reference calls 0x80070490 ERROR_NOT_FOUND, but its code-specific explanation concerns a driver-install operation—not every app download: Microsoft’s Windows Update error reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Windows Update shows 0x80070490
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Open the Get Help app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Follow its prompts.
- If the Get Help route does not resolve the problem, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then select Run beside Windows Update. Microsoft documents this route in its Windows Update troubleshooter instructions.
- Restart the PC, return to Settings > Windows Update, and check for updates again. Make sure the internet connection is working and that you can use an administrator account if prompted. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide also recommends restarting and retrying.
Before attempting deeper system repairs, back up important personal files to a safe location. Microsoft includes file backup among its Windows Update troubleshooting precautions.

Use the registry remedy only for the documented driver case
Microsoft describes a specific situation in which 0x80070490 occurs during driver installation because driver-operation details—such as architecture information—are missing from the registry. Its guidance involves adding a missing Arch value under a particular DriverOperations location, using the relevant Identity value to identify the operation. This is an advanced, case-specific registry change; it is not a general fix for Windows Update or Store downloads.
Do not make this change unless the failure is demonstrably the matching driver-installation case and you can verify the exact key and data against Microsoft’s instructions. Preserve the relevant registry data before editing. If the error appears while installing an app, do not apply this driver-specific remedy.

If Microsoft Store shows 0x80070490
Try Microsoft’s end-user steps in order. The Store’s download and installation failures can involve account, availability, compatibility, or network conditions, and Microsoft has not established one universal Store-specific cause for this code. Its Store troubleshooting reference was last updated on 2026-02-12: Microsoft Store app download troubleshooting.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account that should own or access the app. Close Store and reopen it.
- Install available Windows updates, then restart if Windows requests it.
- In Microsoft Store, open Library and select Get updates to update Store and its apps.
- Reset the Store cache: press Windows key + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. Wait for the process to finish and Store to open. - If the problem is limited to one app, try repairing or resetting that app in Windows settings, or reinstall it from Library. Microsoft’s app troubleshooting instructions explain these options.
Check whether the app is available to your account and PC
Some apps may not be available in your region, may be restricted by family settings, or may not be compatible with the device. Check the app’s Store listing and confirm you are using the account authorized to install it. Microsoft’s guidance on finding or installing a Store app covers availability and account-related checks.

On a work or school network, a firewall or proxy may block Store downloads or access to Windows Update endpoints that Store depends on. If the issue occurs only on a managed network, ask its administrator to check the relevant network access rather than changing security settings yourself. Microsoft’s technical Store guidance discusses registration and endpoint access, but fully uninstalling Microsoft Store is unsupported.

Record the product, installer name, exact error text, and stage where installation stops, then follow that product’s official support guidance. Do not assume a Windows Update driver-registry fix applies to Setup, Xbox, or another installer. Microsoft’s Windows Setup error reference helps identify the specific reported code, but does not list 0x80070490 among the Windows 11 errors shown there. A Microsoft Q&A post dated 2023-06-28 reports the code during an app-install attempt, but it is an individual community report, not a confirmed diagnosis: Microsoft Q&A report.

What the error does—and does not—establish
- Established: Microsoft identifies 0x80070490 as
ERROR_NOT_FOUNDand documents one driver-installation case involving missing operation details. - Not established: That every Store failure or Windows 11 Home installation failure with this code is caused by registry corruption, component-store corruption, or a particular app package.
- Not a confirmed general fix: DISM and System File Checker guidance in Microsoft’s error reference addresses other specific errors, including 0x800f081f and 0x800f0831; it does not establish those tools as a remedy for 0x80070490.
