DISM error 0x800f0906 means Windows could not download the content needed for a repair; it does not, by itself, mean the image is beyond repair. Start with Microsoft’s standard DISM-then-SFC sequence. If that fails, check whether Windows Update or organizational policy is blocking the download, then try a suitable Windows repair source.
What DISM error 0x800f0906 means
Microsoft maps 0x800f0906 to CBS_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILURE: a failure to download content for a Feature on Demand or inbox corruption repair. In some cases, Windows displays “The source files could not be downloaded,” as described in Microsoft Learn’s “.NET Framework 3.5 deployment errors and resolution steps”. The code identifies a download problem, but not its precise cause; the configured source, network access, and policy can differ from one PC to another.
1. Run DISM’s standard online repair
On a running Windows installation, open Command Prompt as administrator. Microsoft’s consumer repair guidance uses Windows Update as the default source for this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthLet it finish; the operation may take several minutes. Note the final message or error code before trying a different source. Microsoft’s procedure is documented in “Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files”.

2. Run System File Checker after DISM
After DISM completes, run SFC in the same elevated Command Prompt:
sfc /scannowMicrosoft specifies this order: DISM first, then System File Checker. SFC scans protected Windows system files and attempts repairs using the component store.
3. Check whether Windows can reach its repair source
Because this code reports a content-download failure, confirm that the PC can access the repair source it is configured to use. If the standard command failed while using Windows Update, a connection problem or a configuration that restricts update content may be involved. The code alone cannot tell you which one.

On a work- or school-managed PC, Windows Update, WSUS, or Group Policy may control where repair and optional-feature payloads come from. Microsoft’s “.NET Framework 3.5 deployment errors and resolution steps” describes a policy that can prevent downloading the payload from Windows Update when an alternate source is missing or invalid. Ask your IT administrator to check the approved policy and source rather than bypassing organizational controls.
4. Check the image’s health before choosing another repair path
Microsoft documents these checks for the currently running Windows image:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthchecks whether corruption has been flagged as repairable.DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthscans the online image for component-store corruption.
If repair is possible, /RestoreHealth performs repair operations. These are online-image commands; an offline Windows installation uses different target syntax. Microsoft’s command reference is in “Repair a Windows image”.

5. Try a suitable alternate repair source
If Windows Update cannot supply the required files, DISM can use a suitable Windows directory from a working installation, a mounted image, a network share, or Windows installation media. Microsoft’s example for an online image is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessC:RepairSourceWindows is an example, not a path that exists on every PC. Replace it with the actual Windows directory containing the source files. For instance, if an image is mounted at D: and its Windows directory is D:Windows, the source path would be D:Windows.
/LimitAccess tells DISM not to use Windows Update. Include it when you intend to rely on the specified source; it is not a universal fix. Without it, Windows Update may remain available as a source. Microsoft documents source paths and this option in “Repair a Windows image”.

6. Make sure the source matches the target installation
A Windows ISO or install.wim is not automatically a valid source just because it contains Windows files. It must contain the content needed by the target image. Microsoft says the working source computer in its network-source example should run the same operating system version as the target.
The required edition, architecture, build, and image index can vary by repair. The Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish one compatibility recipe that works for every Windows version and repair case. If a source is rejected or the repair still fails, verify that it is suitable for the affected installation rather than assuming the path alone is the problem. For a mounted image, point to its Windows directory.
7. Understand how DISM handles multiple sources
Microsoft Learn says that when multiple source locations are specified, DISM uses files from the first location where it finds them and ignores the remaining locations. Order the locations accordingly, and do not assume DISM will combine files from several incomplete sources to satisfy a repair.

8. Read the DISM and CBS logs
If the restore operation does not complete successfully, Microsoft recommends checking these logs for details about the failed package or source:
%windir%LogsDISMdism.log%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log
The exact failure is installation-specific; these local logs can provide details that the error code alone does not. Microsoft’s download-failure troubleshooting guidance is in “Fix Windows Update corruptions and installation failures”.
9. Distinguish repairable corruption from a non-repairable image
A failed download does not establish that the image is non-repairable. Follow the health-check results and the applicable source and policy guidance. Microsoft’s image-servicing documentation says a non-repairable image in that servicing context should be discarded and started again; that is not a blanket instruction for every PC user to reinstall Windows. Do not treat the download error alone as a verdict on the whole Windows installation.
