When Cricut Print Then Cut fails, first determine whether the machine cannot scan the registration marks or whether it scans successfully but cuts in the wrong place. For a scanning failure, correct lighting, print scale, mark visibility, material, mat placement, and sensor-light conditions. For a consistent offset after a successful scan, run Print Then Cut calibration in Design Space. Calibration cannot repair a resized print or a sheet that moved on the mat.
Work through the checks below in order. The sequence starts with changes that take seconds and ends with model-specific calibration and Cricut Member Care.
Identify the type of failure
The symptom tells you which part of the process needs attention. Print Then Cut has two separate relationships to maintain: the sensor must locate the printed marks, and the blade must use those marks to calculate the cut position.
The machine says it cannot read the sensor marks
This is a scanning problem. Start with direct light, print integrity, printer scaling, material reflectivity, and mat placement. Cricut says direct sunlight, overhead reading lamps, and other light aimed at the machine can interfere with the Print Then Cut sensor light. Turn off the directed light or move the machine to indirect ambient light, then retry. See Cricut’s sensor-mark troubleshooting guidance.

The marks scan, but every cut is shifted
This is usually an alignment relationship rather than a mark-visibility problem. Run the Print Then Cut calibration workflow in Design Space. Calibration changes how the machine maps the scanned marks to the printed image; it does not resize a page, restore a cropped mark, or compensate for a sheet that moved on the mat.
The first project is wrong, or the error changes from sheet to sheet
Check the physical setup before calibrating. A page printed with fit-to-page, shrink-to-fit, enlargement, or another scaling option has marks at the wrong coordinates. A sheet that is not flush and flat on the mat can also produce a different error on every run. Calibration is intended for a repeatable offset with an intact, correctly printed sheet.
Use this troubleshooting sequence
- Stop and identify the message. If Design Space reports that it cannot read the marks, follow the scanning checks below. If scanning finishes and the cut is consistently displaced, continue to calibration after verifying the print and mat.
- Remove directed light. Block sunlight falling on the sensor area, switch off a reading lamp aimed at the machine, or reposition the machine. Indirect room light is acceptable in Cricut’s newer troubleshooting guidance; the important change is to remove a bright, focused source from the sensor path.
- Inspect every printed mark. All black registration marks must be present, sharp, and uncovered. Do not use a page with a mark clipped by the printer, hidden under tape, sticker material, laminate, or another object. If a mark is missing, reprint rather than trying to draw or repair it.
- Reprint through Design Space. A Print Then Cut project can be saved in Design Space, but Cricut warns that saving it as a PDF and printing outside the Design Space flow produces incorrectly sized cut sensor marks. Use the Print command generated by Design Space for the project.
- Verify printer output settings. Print in portrait orientation, one page per sheet, at the original size. Disable fit-to-page, shrink-to-fit, enlargement, centering, edge-to-edge or edge-printing modes, and narrow margins. Printer labels differ, so use the system print dialog or your printer’s documentation to find the equivalent controls.
- Check the material. Use a supported, non-reflective or matte sheet. Metallic, glitter, glossy, very dark, or visually busy material can reduce the contrast needed by the sensor. Compatibility depends on the machine model, so use the model guidance in the material section below.
- Reload the mat carefully. Put the sheet at the top-left of the adhesive area, aligned to the printed grid and in the orientation shown for the connected machine. Press it down smoothly without wrinkles. Load the mat evenly under the machine guides; a dirty, damaged, or unevenly loading mat can let the sheet move.
- Retry once under the corrected conditions. If the machine now reads the marks but the cut remains consistently offset, calibrate. If the sensor light never activates during calibration, stop troubleshooting and contact Cricut Member Care.
Fix printer scaling and margins
Registration marks are coordinates, not merely visual guides. Any printer option that changes the page dimensions changes the distance between the marks and the artwork, so a page can look normal while every cut is displaced.

| Printer or document setting | Required choice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Orientation | Portrait | Keeps the page geometry expected by the Print Then Cut layout. |
| Pages | One page per sheet | Prevents a multi-page or tiled output from changing mark positions. |
| Scale | Original size or 100%; no fit-to-page, shrink-to-fit, or enlargement | Preserves the distances Design Space calculated. |
| Margins | Do not use narrow margins; avoid edge printing | Prevents marks from being clipped or repositioned near the paper edge. |
| Alignment option | Do not use printer centering | Printer centering can move the complete mark-and-artwork layout. |
| Ink condition | Use a cartridge or tank with enough ink for solid black marks | Faint or broken marks are harder for the sensor to detect. |
| Calibration sheet quality | Black ink, high print quality, white non-textured copy paper | These are Cricut’s calibration-specific requirements. |
For a calibration sheet, Cricut gives ideal top and left margins of 0.5 to 1.5 inches. Those measurements apply to the calibration print, not as permission to resize an ordinary project. If your printer cannot reproduce the sheet within its printable area, use a printer setting that keeps the page at its intended size rather than one that automatically shrinks it.
Do not assume that a PDF exported from Design Space is interchangeable with the in-app print flow. Cricut’s Print Then Cut instructions specifically warn that printing a saved PDF outside Design Space results in incorrectly sized sensor marks.
Use a material the sensor can read
Print Then Cut works best when the marks have a strong, matte contrast against the sheet. Reflective coatings can bounce light into the sensor, while dark colors and high-contrast patterns can make the black marks harder to distinguish. Cricut’s compatible-materials guide is model-dependent.

| Machine group | Material guidance | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Explore Air 2 and earlier Explore models covered by Cricut’s older guidance | Non-reflective white material | Start with a plain white matte sheet; do not assume glossy printable vinyl will scan. |
| Venture, Joy Xtra, Joy 2, Explore 3 and later specified Explore models, and Maker machines | Non-reflective white, lightly colored, and simple patterned materials are listed as broader options | Keep the pattern simple and maintain clear contrast around every registration mark. |
| Any model | Metallic, glitter, glossy, very dark, or busy high-contrast finishes can interfere | Switch to a matte, lighter, less reflective test sheet before changing calibration values. |
A material being sold as printable does not guarantee Print Then Cut compatibility. Test the exact finish on the exact machine. If a plain matte sheet scans correctly but a particular vinyl or sticker stock does not, the finish is the likely limitation rather than the calibration setting.
Place the sheet and mat correctly
For Explore, Maker, and Joy Xtra workflows, place the printed sheet at the top-left of the mat’s adhesive area, align its edges with the grid, and smooth it flat. Follow the orientation shown on the Design Space screen for the connected machine; Venture directions differ in Cricut’s calibration guide. Do not rotate the sheet merely to make it fit a familiar orientation.
- Use a mat that is clean enough to hold the sheet and has no damaged area under the print.
- Press the paper down from the center toward the edges so bubbles and wrinkles do not lift a mark during loading.
- Keep the leading edge square under the guides and let the machine load the mat evenly.
- Do not trim away the registration-mark border or cover any part of it with tape, laminate, or a sticker.
For an A4 calibration sheet, Cricut says to place the long edge horizontally and point the arrow in the upper-left sensor mark toward the top of the mat. If your machine’s calibration screen shows a different orientation, follow that current model-specific display.

Calibrate Print Then Cut in Design Space
Cricut defines calibration as the process that ensures the machine cuts precisely along the edge of printed images. Use it after the scan succeeds but the blade repeatedly misses the printed edge.
- Open the machine calibration controls. In Design Space, select the connected machine and open the calibration function. On desktop, calibration is reached through the machine settings; on iOS and Android, the controls appear under Print Then Cut settings. Labels and placement can change with the app version and machine model.
- Choose Print Then Cut. Select the Print Then Cut calibration option rather than a different blade, tool, or sensor procedure.
- Print the calibration sheet. Use black ink on white, non-textured copy paper, high print quality, portrait orientation, and the intended page size. Keep the top and left margins in the 0.5-to-1.5-inch ideal range and do not scale the print.
- Place the sheet as shown. Put it on the mat in the orientation displayed by Design Space. For A4, use the long-edge-horizontal arrangement and arrow direction described above unless the current screen instructs otherwise.
- Let the machine scan the marks and make the assessment cuts. Do not unload the mat between the scan and the questions unless Design Space explicitly asks you to do so. Examine where the first cut lands relative to the printed center square.
- Correct a large offset using the prompted line. When the first center square is substantially displaced, Design Space asks you to choose a correction line based on the observed direction. Select the line that matches the displayed instructions, then repeat the assessment cut; do not make random adjustments.
- Complete fine calibration. Continue the on-screen questions and cuts until the cut touches the printed square as directed. Finish the workflow and run a small, representative project before committing valuable material.
The exact screens, trimming instructions, and orientation can vary by machine, page size, desktop versus mobile app, and software revision. Cricut’s current calibration guide, edited September 3, 2026, should take precedence over a screenshot made for another model.
Large-offset correction lines
When the first center-square cut is clearly off, the calibration guide maps the observed direction to a line choice:

| Observed cut position | Correction line listed by Cricut |
|---|---|
| Cut is offset to the left | Line 21 |
| Cut is offset to the right | Line 1 |
| Cut is offset downward | Line A |
| Cut is offset upward | Line U |
These line references are for the large-offset stage of Cricut’s workflow. Use the current on-screen assessment to confirm the direction, repeat the cut when prompted, and then proceed to fine calibration. They are not a substitute for fixing a resized page, a missing mark, or a loose sheet.
What to do when the sensor light does not turn on
The sensor light should activate while the machine scans during Print Then Cut projects and calibration. If it does not activate during calibration, Cricut’s sensor-light troubleshooting guidance directs you to contact Cricut Member Care. Do not keep changing correction lines when the sensor is not illuminating; the machine is not completing the optical scan that calibration requires.
Before contacting support, note the machine model, Design Space platform, project paper or material, and whether the light appears at any point. Also record whether the machine reports an unreadable mark or stops during calibration. This information distinguishes a sensor-light fault from a normal mark-contrast or placement problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the next action by symptom
| What you observe | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| No scan; direct lamp or sunlight is present | Remove the directed light and retry with indirect ambient light. |
| No scan; one mark is clipped, covered, or faint | Reprint through Design Space with solid black marks and no scaling. |
| No scan on glossy, metallic, glitter, dark, or busy material | Test a supported matte, non-reflective, lighter material for the exact machine. |
| No scan; page is rotated or not at the top-left of the mat | Reload in the orientation and position shown for the connected model. |
| Scan succeeds; cut is consistently displaced | Run Print Then Cut calibration, beginning with the large-offset prompt if applicable. |
| Calibration scan begins but the sensor light never illuminates | Contact Cricut Member Care rather than continuing to adjust lines. |
| Error changes unpredictably between sheets | Inspect page scaling, mat adhesion, wrinkles, and loading alignment before calibrating. |
Prevent the problem on future projects
- Keep a known-good matte white sheet for a quick sensor test and calibration.
- Print directly from the current Design Space project instead of exporting and printing a PDF elsewhere.
- Check the print preview and the physical page for all four sides of the registration-mark border before loading.
- Use the same printer, page size, and unscaled print settings that produced a calibrated result.
- Store mats flat and replace one that is dirty, damaged, or no longer holds a sheet evenly.
- When changing from paper to printable vinyl or stickers, verify the finish against the compatibility guidance for your exact model.
- Recalibrate only after the physical setup is correct; calibration is a correction for a repeatable cut-to-print offset, not a general fix for bad input.
Cricut’s help pages have different edit dates and model coverage. The sensor-mark troubleshooting page was edited November 15, 2024, the compatible-materials page October 8, 2024, the sensor-light page October 16, 2024, and the current calibration page September 3, 2026. If Design Space presents instructions that differ from a generic description, use the prompt for your connected machine and page size.
