First check volume and audio routing, then remove anything blocking the speaker openings and test more than one app. If the sound remains crackly or quiet after a restart and the manufacturer’s recommended checks, contact the phone maker or a qualified repair provider. The exact steps vary by phone model; don’t insert objects into the grille or use compressed air.
Find out when the sound problem happens
Test music or video, notifications, calls, and speakerphone. Compare more than one app, and try headphones if available. This helps distinguish a speaker issue from a problem with a particular app, call connection, or audio route.
- Only one app: Update or troubleshoot that app before assuming the phone’s speaker is damaged.
- Only calls: Check reception and try a different location. Apple notes that network or reception problems can cause static or crackling during calls.
- All audio: Continue with the volume, routing, obstruction, and software checks below.
Check volume, mute settings, and audio routing
- Raise the relevant media or call volume while audio is playing. Make sure the phone is not muted.
- Turn Bluetooth off temporarily and disconnect any wired or USB audio accessory. Sound may be playing through a connected device instead of the phone.
- Remove the case or film temporarily if it could cover a speaker opening or vent.
- On iPhone, check Silent mode and Focus or Do Not Disturb. Apple also recommends testing the Ringtone and Alerts slider.
Menu names and controls vary by model and software version, so use the instructions for your specific phone rather than assuming a universal path.

Inspect and gently clean an accessible opening
Look for visible lint or other obstruction without pushing anything into the speaker grille. If the manufacturer’s instructions recommend cleaning, follow them for your model. Apple advises using a small, clean, dry, soft-bristled brush; Samsung UK suggests gently brushing with a dry toothbrush. Brushing may clear an external obstruction, but it will not repair a damaged speaker or resolve every cause of distortion.

Do not insert pins, toothpicks, swabs, or other objects into the openings, and do not use liquid or canned compressed air. Samsung warns that canned compressed air may damage the device.
If the phone got wet, dry it according to its guidance
Water in a speaker can temporarily affect sound. Samsung advises patting the earpiece, speaker, microphone, and USB port with a clean, soft cloth; for salt-water exposure, its guidance says to rinse with fresh water and dry thoroughly. Follow the liquid-care instructions for your exact model. Water resistance does not guarantee that audio will sound normal immediately or that liquid damage is covered by warranty.

Restart the phone and check for software causes
- Restart the phone, then test the same audio sources again.
- Install any available system updates and retest.
- If the problem started after installing an app, investigate that app. On Samsung phones, Safe mode disables downloaded apps; if the sound problem disappears in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a likely cause. Consult Samsung’s instructions for your model to enter Safe mode.
A factory reset is a later option, not a first troubleshooting step. It erases personal data and settings; back up the phone before considering one.
Check for model-specific conditions and run diagnostics
Some symptoms have explanations that apply only to particular models. Samsung says a large change in ambient air pressure can make Galaxy speakers sound quiet, crackly, or distorted while pressure equalizes. Its US guidance suggests temporarily sliding the SIM tray partway out to speed equalization. This is Samsung-specific advice: check your model’s instructions and never force the tray.

Samsung Members diagnostics can help check a Galaxy device. On iPhone, Apple says a dimmed speaker control or persistent sound trouble may require service. Use the manufacturer’s current diagnostic and support guidance for your exact phone.

Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the sound remains distorted across multiple apps and audio sources, a built-in diagnostic flags a fault, or the phone may have physical or liquid damage. A crackling or quiet-speaker symptom alone does not identify a failed part; the model and test results matter. Back up important data before service if possible, and do not open the phone or buy a replacement speaker based on the symptom alone.
