If Call of Duty voice chat is not working, start with the game’s Voice Chat and Game Chat Voice audience settings, then clear player or lobby mutes. Next check your platform account’s communication permissions, because those controls can override in-game settings. If the problem affects other online features, check Activision and platform service status, then investigate NAT or your headset. The menu names below use Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 as the documented example; other Call of Duty titles, seasons and platforms may place the controls differently.
The safest approach is to change one control, test with one known teammate, and record what changed. That separates an incoming-audio problem from an outgoing-microphone problem and prevents an unnecessary router change or headset purchase.
Identify which voice-chat failure you have
The symptom usually points to the right branch. Test in a live party or match after each change rather than changing several settings at once. Ask one teammate to stay available as your test partner so you can tell whether the result is consistent.
Recommended Free Tools
| Symptom | Most useful first check | What the check targets |
|---|---|---|
| Teammates cannot hear you | Voice Chat enabled, microphone selected by the platform, and Game Chat Voice audience | Your outgoing voice path and who is allowed to receive it |
| You cannot hear anyone | Voice Chat, Voice Chat Volume, audience, and player or lobby mutes | Incoming volume, channel eligibility and mute state |
| Only one player cannot hear or be heard | That player’s individual mute state | A local lobby or scoreboard mute |
| The whole lobby has audio trouble while multiplayer also disconnects | Activision and platform service status, then NAT | Service availability and peer connectivity |
| Menus are unavailable or show a communication restriction | Account-level voice-chat status and Activision support | An enforcement or account communication block |
| Everyone can hear others except you, across games | Platform microphone input and a known-working headset | Physical connection, input selection or a failed microphone |
Also note the scope. If party chat on the platform works but in-game chat does not, concentrate on the game audience, mutes and account permissions. If the microphone fails in every game, the platform input or hardware branch is more useful. If only one friend is affected, do not start by changing your whole home network.

1. Check Black Ops 6 voice settings first
Activision’s Communication Features in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 guide documents the relevant controls under the game’s audio settings. From the main menu, open Settings, choose Audio, and open the Voice Chat section. Your title may use a slightly different path or label, but look for the same functions. Take a quick screenshot or note of the current values before changing them so you can reverse a test.
Confirm Voice Chat is enabled
Make sure Voice Chat is on. If it is disabled, the game will not send or play game-chat audio even when the headset itself works. Toggle it once, leave the menu, and test; repeatedly switching it without a test does not identify the cause.
Raise Voice Chat Volume
Check Voice Chat Volume before troubleshooting the microphone. A very low value can look like a connection failure because teammates are speaking but their audio is effectively inaudible. Raise it to a clearly audible level for the test, then adjust it down to a comfortable level afterward. This control concerns voice-chat playback, so it will not repair a microphone that produces no input.

Choose the correct Game Chat Voice audience
Game Chat Voice determines who can communicate with you. Black Ops 6 documents these choices:
- All Lobby: allows communication with the broader lobby where the match supports it.
- Party Only: limits game chat to players in your party.
- Friends Only: limits communication to friends.
- Friends & Chat Channels: limits communication to friends and the chat channels you use.
Select an audience that includes the people you are trying to reach. A player who is in your party may still be excluded if the setting is restricted to another audience. Team-based matches generally limit hearing and speaking to teammates, with exceptions, so do not use a team-only result as proof that every lobby member should be audible. Test with a teammate who should be eligible under the selected audience, rather than with a random opponent.
Check Proximity Chat separately
Proximity Chat is a separate documented control. It affects nearby players where the mode supports that feature; it does not replace the normal game-chat audience selection. If you are testing with a teammate, use the regular Game Chat Voice setting and test in a mode where teammate communication is expected. A proximity-chat test can be misleading when the match mode does not provide that channel or when the other player is not within the relevant range.
Confirm the test is actually using game chat
Use a match or lobby where game chat is expected, not only a platform party. Platform party audio and Call of Duty game audio are separate paths. If your teammate hears you in a platform party but not in the match, keep the headset connected and work through the game audience and mute checks instead of replacing it immediately.

A mute can affect both directions. Activision’s Black Ops 6 guide says that muting a player also prevents that player from hearing you. That means a teammate who cannot hear you may have been muted on your side, not merely have a microphone problem.

Unmute from the pre-game lobby
In the pre-game lobby, inspect the player list and remove any mute applied to the teammate you are testing with. If the game offers a lobby-wide mute control, make sure it is not active. A lobby-wide setting can make several people appear silent even when no individual icon looks unusual.
Unmute from the match scoreboard
Open the in-match scoreboard and inspect the voice controls for the relevant player. Clear the individual mute, then test again. Also check whether a lobby-wide mute was enabled separately; clearing one player’s icon does not necessarily clear the lobby control. Menus can differ by title and platform, so use the visible player-list or scoreboard voice control rather than assuming a particular button.
Ask the other player to check their own mute state as well. Voice chat is two-sided: either person’s local mute can make the conversation appear broken. Have both players speak after the change, because hearing one direction does not prove that the return path is working.
3. Check platform communication and privacy controls
Activision warns that some communication options are managed in the platform account’s settings and may override the in-game settings. The official wording is: “Please note, however, that some of these options may also be managed within your platform account’s settings, which may override your in-game settings.” This is why an apparently correct Call of Duty dropdown is not conclusive.
Open the current communication, privacy, parental-control or online-safety settings for the account and platform you use. Confirm that voice communication with other players is permitted, that the account is not restricted from multiplayer chat, and that the microphone is allowed for the game or launcher. Because console and PC menu paths change, use the platform’s current help documentation rather than following an outdated path from another Call of Duty season. Do not assume that a setting with the same name has the same scope on every platform.
Check the account that is actually signed in to Call of Duty. A family or managed account can have different communication rules from the device owner’s account. If more than one account is used on the console or PC, test with the affected account and note whether another account behaves differently; that comparison points toward an account policy rather than a headset fault.
After changing an account permission, fully close and relaunch Call of Duty so it receives the updated policy. Then test with one known teammate. If the platform blocks communication at account level, changing an in-game dropdown will not override it. If the setting is already allowed, do not keep toggling it; move to account-status and service checks.

If controls are locked, repeatedly reset, or a notice says communication is restricted, treat the problem as an account issue instead of a headset issue. Activision’s Support Options page includes the option “My Voice Chat has been muted.” Use that route for the relevant game and account.

Keep the exact wording of any notice, the platform you play on and when the restriction appeared. Include whether the restriction affects only Call of Duty or also the platform’s other games. Those details help distinguish an Activision communication action from a platform privacy setting. Do not create a second account or repeatedly change router settings while an account restriction is active; those actions do not remove a support-level communication mute.
A support request is appropriate when the voice controls are unavailable, an account warning persists after platform permissions are correct, or the support page’s wording matches your symptom. It is not a substitute for clearing a simple scoreboard mute, so complete the reversible checks first.
5. Check whether the services are having a wider problem
When voice trouble appears together with login failures, matchmaking errors, disconnects or missing online features, check Activision Online Services and the network-status page for your platform. Activision’s status guidance says that if its own platform status is online while connection trouble continues, players should check the platform network as well.

Do not assume an outage from an old social-media post or a previous incident. Check both services around the time you are testing, and note whether the problem affects several friends. If both services report normal operation, return to the local settings and account checks rather than waiting for an unconfirmed outage.
An outage can explain a whole-lobby or multi-feature failure, but it does not explain why one player is muted in the scoreboard or why a platform microphone meter never moves. Match the breadth of the status problem to the breadth of your symptom before treating it as the cause.
6. Use NAT as a secondary connectivity check
NAT describes how your network permits peer connections. Activision’s Port Forward and NAT FAQ explains that Moderate/Type 2 and Strict/Type 3 NAT can limit which other consoles or PCs connect to you.
Check NAT when voice problems occur alongside party-join failures, matchmaking errors or frequent disconnects. NAT is not a guaranteed voice-chat fix: the documentation supports it as a peer-connectivity branch, not as proof that changing NAT alone repairs a microphone or chat-channel setting. A NAT label by itself does not tell you that the headset, account or audience is wrong.
- If multiplayer works normally and only your microphone is silent, finish the voice, mute, platform and hardware checks before changing the router.
- If you cannot join friends or repeatedly lose the session, record the displayed NAT category and follow the platform or Activision networking guidance for that category.
- Avoid making router changes solely because a teammate cannot hear you; router configuration is less reversible than a mute or audience setting.
- If a router change is necessary for a broader connection problem, document the original configuration so you can undo the test. Do not treat a successful connection change as proof that every future voice failure is a NAT issue.
7. Isolate the headset or microphone only when symptoms point to hardware
Hardware is the final practical branch, not the first purchase to make. First verify that the headset is physically connected, not muted by an inline switch, and selected as the active input by the console or PC. Check whether the platform’s microphone meter responds when you speak. A meter that responds indicates that the platform is receiving input, even if the game still needs an audience or permission correction.

Use a known-working device
Test with a compatible headset and microphone that already works on another device, or borrow one temporarily. If the replacement works immediately, the original headset, cable, adapter or microphone input is the likely fault. If neither device works, return to platform permissions, account status and game settings. Test the original device again after reconnecting it so a loose connection is not mistaken for permanent failure.
When a replacement is justified
A gaming headset with microphone is a reasonable replacement only when your current hardware is missing, incompatible or demonstrably faulty. Check compatibility with your exact console, controller, USB connection or PC audio port before buying. A product purchase has a real cost, while changing an audience, clearing a mute or checking account permissions is free and reversible. No particular model is required to perform the software checks above, and no headset can remove an account restriction or service outage.
Choose the right troubleshooting path
| Path | Use it when | Cost and reversibility | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Software and account checks | Only voice chat is affected, or one player is silent | Free and generally reversible | One game account, lobby or device |
| Service and network checks | Voice trouble accompanies login, matchmaking or disconnect errors | Free; status checks are non-invasive, router changes are less reversible | Potentially the whole service, network or lobby |
| Hardware isolation | Your microphone fails across games or the platform meter shows no input | Free if you can borrow a device; replacement has a cost | Your headset, cable, adapter or input port |
Use the first path before the others because it is free, fast and least disruptive. Move to the next path only when the symptom still matches it. This ordering also prevents a common waste: buying a headset when the real cause is a party-only audience, a lobby-wide mute or a platform communication block.

A complete reset-and-test sequence
- Leave the match or lobby and open the game’s audio settings.
- Enable Voice Chat, set Voice Chat Volume to an audible level, and choose a Game Chat Voice audience that includes your test partner.
- Check Proximity Chat only if the mode and test require it.
- Inspect the pre-game lobby for an individual mute and a lobby-wide mute.
- Join a match, open the scoreboard and confirm the test player is not muted there.
- Ask the test player to perform the same mute check on their side.
- Review the platform account’s communication and privacy permissions, then restart the game after any change.
- If a restriction notice appears, use Activision Support Options and select “My Voice Chat has been muted.”
- If other online functions fail, check Activision Online Services and the platform network status.
- If multiplayer connectivity is also poor, note the NAT category and investigate it as a separate networking issue.
- If only your microphone remains silent, test a known-working compatible headset or microphone and verify the platform input meter.
Write down the result after each step: who could hear whom, whether the issue was lobby-wide, and whether another account or device behaved differently. This simple log keeps you from repeating the same check and gives support a clear sequence if the problem persists.
What not to do
- Do not assume a working headset proves that the correct game-chat audience is selected.
- Do not assume a silent teammate has a broken microphone before checking both players’ mute icons.
- Do not treat a Moderate/Type 2 or Strict/Type 3 NAT result as a guaranteed voice-chat diagnosis.
- Do not follow console menu paths copied from a different season or platform; account labels change.
- Do not buy a headset to solve an account restriction, lobby mute, outage or privacy block.
- Do not change several settings at once; you will lose the evidence showing which check mattered.
- Do not use an opponent or an unsupported proximity-chat mode as the only voice test.
When to contact support
Contact Activision when the in-game controls are unavailable, a communication restriction persists after platform permissions are correct, or the support wording explicitly says voice chat has been muted. Include your platform, Call of Duty title, account identifier requested by the support form, the exact on-screen message and the checks you completed. For a confirmed platform-level privacy block, use the platform’s own account-support route; Activision cannot change a permission controlled by that platform.
If the issue is limited to a failed microphone across multiple games, contact the hardware or platform manufacturer instead of treating it as an Activision enforcement case. If several online features fail at once, include the service-status results and NAT category in your notes. The goal is to show whether the failure follows the account, the device, the lobby or the wider service.
This process separates the common reversible causes—wrong audience, mute and platform permission—from less common or broader causes such as service status, NAT restrictions and failed hardware. It also avoids changing network equipment when the evidence points to a local chat control.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can my teammates hear each other but not me?
First confirm Voice Chat is enabled, the platform has selected the correct microphone, and Game Chat Voice includes those teammates. Then clear your individual and lobby-wide mute states. If the platform microphone meter does not react, test a known-working compatible headset; if it does react, focus on audience, permissions and account status.

I can hear players, but they cannot hear me. Is my headset broken?
Not necessarily. Hearing confirms only the incoming path. Check the platform microphone input, Game Chat Voice audience, player and lobby mutes, and platform communication permissions before buying hardware. A known-working headset is a useful isolation test when the microphone fails in other games or the input meter shows no signal.
What does Game Chat Voice do in Black Ops 6?
It controls who can communicate with you. The documented choices are All Lobby, Party Only, Friends Only, and Friends & Chat Channels. Choose the audience that includes your test partner, while remembering that team-based matches generally limit communication to teammates.
Can a mute stop someone from hearing me?
Yes. Activision’s Black Ops 6 communication guide says muting a player also prevents that player from hearing you. Check the pre-game lobby and the in-match scoreboard, and ask the other player to check their own mute state too.
Could my console or PC privacy settings override Call of Duty?
Yes. Activision warns that some communication options are managed in the platform account and may override in-game settings. Review the current communication, privacy, parental-control or online-safety controls for the account actually signed in, then relaunch the game after changing a permission.
Should I change NAT to fix voice chat?
Only when voice trouble occurs with party-join failures, matchmaking errors or disconnects. Activision’s NAT guidance says Moderate/Type 2 and Strict/Type 3 NAT can limit peer connections, but it does not establish that changing NAT alone repairs voice chat. Start with the free game, mute and account checks.
What does “My Voice Chat has been muted” mean?
It indicates that an account-level communication restriction may be involved. Activision’s Support Options page provides that exact support route. Record the notice, platform and timing, and use the relevant support form rather than trying to solve the restriction with router changes or a new headset.
When should I buy a gaming headset with a microphone?
Only after checking settings, mutes, platform permissions, account status and service conditions. Borrow or test a compatible working device first. Buy a replacement when your current headset, cable, adapter or microphone input is missing, incompatible or demonstrably faulty, and verify compatibility with your exact platform.
