Most Switch 2 installation failures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 come down to one of four conditions: insufficient free space, an out-of-date console, a paused download, or corrupted data on the console or its microSD Express card. Start by checking storage, update the system, resume the download from User Settings, and then isolate the installation in system memory if error 2002-1002 continues.
Nintendo’s Australian eShop listing gives the software a 79.1 GB requirement and warns that mandatory updates can need additional space. The procedures below use Nintendo and Activision’s published Switch 2 guidance, including what to do when a download stalls, how to test a microSD Express card, and how to recover from a crash after installation.
How much storage Modern Warfare 4 needs on Switch 2
The Nintendo eShop Australia listing for Modern Warfare 4, retrieved in 2026, states 79.1 GB for the software. That is the listed requirement for the title, not a promise that 79.1 GB of total free space will always be enough. Nintendo also warns on the listing that mandatory updates may require more room.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Leave headroom beyond the displayed requirement before beginning a download or update. A console that has exactly the listed amount available can still fail when it needs temporary working space or when the launch or a later mandatory update is applied. The listing also notes that availability, online services and required update space can change by region and over time. Check the listing for your own Nintendo Account region if its figure differs.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
For the official listing and its current regional notices, see Nintendo eShop Australia.
Preorders can download before launch, but still need an update
Activision says a Nintendo eShop preorder can download before launch when the Switch 2 is online. That pre-install is not the complete launch process: a small launch update is required before playing. Keep the console connected and retain free space after the pre-install so the update can finish.
Activision’s installation guidance is available at Modern Warfare 4 installation support.

Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards for removable software storage. Nintendo’s support material says a microSD Express card can save screenshots and software data, including downloaded software, software updates and downloadable content. Nintendo does not describe ordinary, non-Express microSD cards as compatible with Switch 2, so a conventional card should not be treated as an acceptable substitute.
Use the card only after confirming that its packaging and specifications identify it as microSD Express. If a card is not recognized, produces corrupted-data errors or causes the download to fail, power the console off completely before removing or reinserting it.
Nintendo’s storage guidance is at Nintendo Support: insufficient space and microSD Express.
Internal storage versus microSD Express
Nintendo documents compatibility and the ability to store downloaded software, updates and DLC, but the cited official material does not publish a performance comparison between system memory and particular card models. Therefore, use reliability and available capacity—not an assumed speed advantage—as the deciding factors.

If the same download fails in both locations, storage media is less likely to be the only cause. If system memory works but the card fails, concentrate on the card, its seating, formatting or replacement.
Do these checks before retrying
- Confirm that the console has more than the eShop’s listed requirement available, rather than only the exact number.
- Make sure the console is connected to the internet; a preorder download and the launch update both depend on connectivity.
- Close any software currently running, because Nintendo’s stalled-download procedure begins with no active software.
- Check whether the installed removable card is microSD Express.
- Note whether the failure happens during the initial download, an update, a redownload after corruption, or while launching the game. That distinction determines the next step.
- Record the exact error code and whether the progress bar stops at the same point each time. This makes it easier to tell a repeatable storage failure from a temporarily paused transfer.
- Do not remove a card while the console is on. Power down first, even if the download appears to have stopped.
Step-by-step fix for a download that will not start or is stuck
1. Make room and choose a storage location
First, compare the console’s free capacity with the 79.1 GB eShop requirement and leave additional room for mandatory updates. Remove unused software or use a supported microSD Express card for downloaded software. If the card is already installed and the error appears only when saving to it, plan to test system memory later in the process rather than repeatedly retrying the same failing destination.
Check free space after deleting anything. A partially downloaded package or update can continue to occupy storage, so the number shown before cleanup may not match the number shown afterward. If you have enough room only for the base listing and not for update headroom, clear additional space before starting.
2. Update the Switch 2 system
Activision lists a console update as an installation prerequisite. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings, choose System, and select System Update. Allow the update to complete, then return to the download. A game update cannot reliably correct a console that is still running an older system version.
Recommended Free Tools
Do this before deleting the game. Updating first avoids repeating a large download on a system that still needs its own software update.
3. Resume the download through User Settings
- Confirm the internet connection and close all running software.
- From the HOME Menu, open the user page.
- Choose User Settings.
- Select Update Download Progress.
- Let the console reconnect and continue the download without launching software that might pause it.
Nintendo documents this route for a download or update that appears stalled. If the progress remains unchanged after the console has reconnected, restart the Switch 2 and repeat the same check. The relevant Nintendo procedure is Nintendo Support: download progress is stuck.
A stalled bar does not automatically mean the installation is corrupted. First perform the connection, software-closure and progress-update steps. Escalate to deletion and redownload when the console reports corrupted data or when Nintendo’s error-code sequence calls for it.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
4. Recheck space after a failed attempt
A failed or interrupted attempt can leave data that still occupies storage. Check the available capacity again before starting another download. If the remaining space is too close to the requirement, remove unused software or select a microSD Express card with adequate free capacity. Do not assume that deleting one small item will provide enough room for the game and its mandatory update.
How to fix Nintendo error 2002-1002
Error 2002-1002 is associated with corrupted data or a problem reading the storage location during download or installation. Nintendo’s troubleshooting sequence is deliberately progressive: update the system, check the data, delete and redownload the affected software, then test the card and system memory separately.
Run Nintendo’s recovery sequence
- Install any pending system update. Open System Settings > System > System Update and finish the update before attempting another download.
- Check for corrupted data. Use the Switch 2’s data-check function for the affected software. If corrupted data is reported, continue to the deletion step rather than repeatedly launching the damaged installation.
- Delete the problematic software and redownload it. Remove the affected installation using the console’s software-management controls, then download it again from the Nintendo eShop. Make sure the console remains online and has sufficient free space.
- Reseat the microSD Express card if one is installed. Power the Switch 2 off completely before removing or reinserting the card. Do not pull the card while the system is operating.
- Format the card if Nintendo’s recovery process calls for it. Formatting erases data on the card, so preserve any screenshots or other files you need before confirming the format. Redownload the software after the format finishes.
- Try another supported microSD Express card. A second card helps distinguish a card-specific failure from a console or network problem.
- Test system memory. Remove the card while the console is powered off and attempt the download directly to internal storage. If the installation succeeds there but not on the card, the card or its data is the likely focus for further troubleshooting.
Nintendo says that persistent failure with multiple supported cards and with system memory may require repair. Its complete error-code instructions are at Nintendo Support: error code 2002-1002.
What each test tells you
| Result | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Redownload works after deleting corrupted data | The previous software data was damaged | Complete the download and launch the game normally |
| System memory works, card fails | The issue is isolated to the card, its data or its seating | Reseat, format or replace the card with another supported microSD Express card |
| Several supported cards fail, system memory works | More than one card or card setup is unsuitable | Use system memory or continue with a known-supported card; avoid the failing card |
| System memory and multiple supported cards fail | The fault is not isolated to one removable card | Follow Nintendo’s repair-escalation guidance |
Fixing the launch update
The launch update is separate from the preorder or base download. If the base software is present but the update will not complete, apply the same prerequisites in order: maintain an internet connection, close running software, verify additional free space, update the console, and use User Settings > Update Download Progress to resume it.
Do not treat a completed pre-install as proof that the console has enough capacity for the launch update. Nintendo’s eShop warning about additional mandatory-update space applies to this situation. If the update repeatedly fails on a microSD Express card, use the error 2002-1002 sequence and test system memory rather than deleting and reinstalling to the same failing destination indefinitely.
Download versus update: why the distinction matters
A preorder may already have placed most of the game on the console before release, yet the title can still require a launch update. A stalled update therefore does not necessarily mean the original download failed. Check the software’s current storage use and the remaining free capacity, then resume the update through User Settings. If Nintendo reports corrupted data, follow the corruption sequence instead of treating it as an ordinary pause.
What to do when Modern Warfare 4 crashes or freezes
A successful installation does not rule out a startup problem. Activision’s Switch 2 instruction is to power the system down completely, then restart it and launch the game again. Sleep Mode is not the same as a full restart.

Normal crash recovery
- Exit the game if the HOME Menu still responds.
- Power down the Switch 2 completely, not merely into Sleep Mode.
- Wait for shutdown to finish, turn the console on again, and launch the game.
If the console is frozen
When the system does not respond, hold the POWER button to force a shutdown. Wait at least 30 seconds, turn the console on again and try the game. A forced shutdown should be reserved for an unresponsive console; use a normal power-down whenever the menus work.
Share crash information with Activision
Activision provides an error-reporting option through Settings > System > Share Error Information. Enable it, then restart the console so the report can be sent. This gives Activision diagnostic information about the crash without changing the storage troubleshooting steps. The crash and freeze instructions are at Activision Support: crashes or game freezes in Modern Warfare 4.

- There is not enough free space: create more room or select a microSD Express card, then retry.
- The console is not current: complete System Settings > System > System Update first.
- The progress bar is stalled: close software, confirm connectivity, use the user page’s User Settings > Update Download Progress, and restart if necessary.
- Error 2002-1002 or corrupted data appears: check the data, delete and redownload, then reseat, format or replace the card as appropriate.
- The card fails but system memory works: stop using the failing card for this installation and use a supported replacement or internal storage.
- Both system memory and multiple supported cards fail: consult Nintendo’s repair guidance.
- The installed game crashes: perform a complete power-down and restart; if it continues, enable error-information sharing and submit the resulting report.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying the wrong card: an ordinary microSD card is not identified by Nintendo as compatible. Look specifically for microSD Express.
- Removing a card while powered on: shut the Switch 2 down first to avoid worsening a data or read problem.
- Counting only the base requirement: 79.1 GB does not include the extra room Nintendo says mandatory updates may need.
- Using Sleep Mode as a restart: Activision’s crash instruction requires a complete power-down.
- Repeating the same failed destination: if a card fails and system memory is available, test internal storage instead of retrying the card endlessly.
- Formatting without a backup: formatting erases the card’s data. Preserve anything needed before confirming.
- Deleting before updating the console: install the pending system update first, then retry the game installation.
Important limits of the published guidance
Nintendo and Activision publish the procedures above, but they do not provide official failure-rate statistics, download-speed benchmarks or a performance ranking for individual microSD Express models in the cited material. Avoid choosing a card based on an unsupported speed claim. The meaningful checks are compatibility, free capacity, whether the card is seated correctly, and whether the same installation succeeds in system memory.
The eShop listing is regional and time-sensitive. Its 79.1 GB figure is specifically the Nintendo eShop Australia listing identified in 2026, while the warning about additional update space is the reason to keep headroom regardless of region. If your regional listing, system software or online-service availability differs, follow the notices shown for your account and console.

Why is my Modern Warfare 4 update stuck?
Confirm connectivity, close all software, open the user page, choose User Settings, and select Update Download Progress. Restart the console if progress does not resume, then recheck available space.
What does Nintendo error 2002-1002 mean?
It indicates a possible corrupted-data or storage-reading problem. Update the system, check for corrupted data, delete and redownload the software, then reseat, format or replace the microSD Express card and test system memory as Nintendo directs.
Can a preorder finish downloading before launch?
Yes. Activision says an eShop preorder can download before launch while the console is online, but a small launch update is still required before playing.
Should I use internal storage or microSD Express?
Either can hold the game when it has enough capacity. Use compatibility, free space and reliability as the deciding factors; the cited Nintendo guidance does not rank specific cards by performance.
What should I do if the installed game crashes?
Power the Switch 2 down completely and restart it; Sleep Mode is not equivalent. If the console is frozen, hold POWER, wait at least 30 seconds, restart, and enable Settings > System > Share Error Information if crashes continue.
The Bottom Line
For most Switch 2 problems, start with the basics: keep more than 79.1 GB free, reserve extra room for mandatory updates, use only microSD Express, update the console, and resume stalled transfers through User Settings > Update Download Progress. For error 2002-1002, check and delete corrupted data, redownload, then compare a supported card with system memory. If both storage locations fail, follow Nintendo’s repair guidance; if the game crashes, perform a complete restart and share error information with Activision.
