If Call of Duty will not download, update, install, or load on a Nintendo Switch 2, start with the console-level fixes: make sure the system is online, close the game completely, select User Settings > Update Download Progress, restart the console if necessary, and verify that the current storage requirement is available. Nintendo says downloads can pause while software is being played, and storage requirements vary by game. Only after those checks should you move to Activision Support for a title-specific failure.

The exact Call of Duty edition, patch, region, and eShop listing determine the required space. Do not rely on an old file-size figure or assume every Call of Duty release uses identical storage. The current requirement is shown on the physical package or in Nintendo eShop, including whether a microSD Express card is required.

Identify the failure before changing anything

Different symptoms point to different checks. A download that pauses because the game is open is not the same problem as an install blocked by insufficient storage. Use this table to choose the shortest safe path.

What you see Most relevant condition First action What a successful result looks like
The download stays at zero or stops after you launch Call of Duty Nintendo notes that downloads can pause for some software that is currently being played. Save your progress, close Call of Duty with X from HOME, then use User Settings > Update Download Progress. The progress indicator resumes without the game running.
An update is present but does not advance The update is still Switch 2 download data and can be affected by running software, a disconnected network, or a stalled queue. Use the same close, refresh, restart, and connection-test sequence described below. The update begins advancing or the console reports a specific condition that can be escalated.
The console reports that there is not enough space The installed edition and current update need more free storage than is available. Check the live eShop or package requirement, then remove unused software or other content. The requirement is met and the install or update can be queued again.
The console has internet and space, but Call of Duty still will not install or load A title-specific installation, update, downloadable-content, or loading problem may remain. Use Activision Support with Nintendo Switch 2 selected as the platform and the closest problem category. The support site presents troubleshooting or account-specific options for the selected title.

Fix a Call of Duty download that will not start or is stuck

Work through these steps in order. They are designed to remove the most common console-side causes without deleting save data or repeatedly reinstalling the game.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
  1. Confirm the Switch 2 is online. Check that the console is connected to an active internet connection before retrying the download. If other devices are also offline, resolve that connection problem first. If only the Switch 2 is affected, continue with the console’s connection checks.
  2. Save your game and close Call of Duty. From the HOME Menu, highlight the Call of Duty icon and press X to close the software. Nintendo explains that downloads will pause for some games and software that are currently being played, so leaving Call of Duty open can make a healthy download appear frozen.
  3. Refresh the queued download. Open the user page from HOME, choose User Settings, and select Update Download Progress. This tells the console to check the pending software data again after the game has been closed.
  4. Leave the software closed while progress is checked. Do not launch Call of Duty or another title that could pause the transfer while you are determining whether the queue has resumed. A change in the progress indicator confirms that the original pause condition has been removed.
  5. Restart the console if it remains stalled. Restart the Switch 2, wait for it to reconnect to the internet, and then check the pending download again. A restart is a recovery step for a queue that did not refresh cleanly; it does not change the storage requirement or remove saved progress.
  6. Test the connection when the download is merely slow. A slow transfer is different from a queue that never starts. Run the Switch 2 internet connection test and address whatever network condition it reports. After the connection is stable, return to the pending download with Call of Duty still closed.

Do not interpret a brief lack of visible movement as proof that the installation has failed. First distinguish a paused queue, a slow connection, and a storage block. If the console displays a specific error after this sequence, record the wording and use it when you select a support category; do not assume that one error-code remedy applies to every Call of Duty edition.

When a Call of Duty update will not progress

An update is still Nintendo Switch 2 software data, even when the base game is already installed. The controls that govern a stalled download therefore apply to an update as well: the game must not be running, the queued data should be refreshed, and the console may need to reconnect after a restart.

  1. Save and close Call of Duty from HOME by highlighting it and pressing X.
  2. Open the user page, choose User Settings, and select Update Download Progress.
  3. If no progress appears, restart the Switch 2 and allow it to reconnect before checking the update again.
  4. If the update is advancing very slowly rather than remaining unchanged, run the console’s internet connection test.

The size and contents of an update can change between editions and releases. The support material available here does not establish a universal fix for any particular error code, so an error-specific instruction should come from Activision’s article for that code or from its support flow for the selected title. Avoid deleting save data as a first response: the Nintendo storage guidance supports removing unused software or other content, not treating save-data deletion as a required update step.

Resolve an insufficient-storage message

Check the requirement for the exact release

Nintendo states that “Storage requirements vary by game.” Check the current Call of Duty listing in Nintendo eShop or the storage information printed on the physical package. The listing is the appropriate authority for the edition, region, and version you are trying to install, and it can indicate whether a microSD Express card is needed.

Do not carry forward a number from an older article, a different platform, or a previous patch. The base download, later updates, and downloadable content can change the amount of space needed. Nintendo’s cited support guidance does not publish one permanent Call of Duty install size, so a capacity-neutral answer is more accurate than a single number.

Free space without touching saves

Remove software or other stored content that you are not currently using, then check the available space again before retrying the install. Keep the distinction clear:

  • Multiple Capacity Options – Available in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB options to suit your storage needs. Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Unused software: games or applications that can be removed to recover storage.
  • Other content: stored items that are not needed for the immediate installation and can be cleared according to the console’s storage-management options.
  • Save data: not identified by the cited Nintendo guidance as a necessary deletion target. Do not erase it merely because an installation is short on space.

After freeing space, recheck the live Call of Duty requirement rather than assuming that the amount you removed is sufficient. Keep additional room in mind for future updates and DLC, because the required headroom can change with the title’s release cycle.

Use a compatible microSD Express card when internal space is not enough

Nintendo identifies a microSD Express card as the supported expansion path for Switch 2. Its support guidance says, “A microSD Express card can be used to save screenshots and software data, including downloaded software, software updates, and DLC.” Cards are available in different capacities, so choose one only after checking the current Call of Duty listing and considering future updates.

A card is a storage accessory, not a guarantee that a particular download will be faster or that every installation problem will disappear. It addresses capacity when the card is compatible and has enough room; it does not replace an internet connection, the close-and-refresh procedure, or title-specific support.

How to choose storage for Call of Duty on Switch 2

When comparing cards, use criteria that remain meaningful even as game files change. The exact Call of Duty size and patch size should come from the current eShop listing, not from a card advertisement or an old comparison.

Criterion What to verify Why it matters
Switch 2 compatibility The card is explicitly a microSD Express card supported by Nintendo Switch 2. A physically similar card that is not the supported Express type may not provide the expected storage path.
Capacity Enough room for the current Call of Duty requirement plus anticipated updates and DLC. The requirement is game- and release-specific and can change; a barely sufficient card can become impractical after later patches.
Source and authenticity Licensed or reputable sourcing with clear product identification. Reliable sourcing reduces the risk of counterfeit capacity claims or an unidentifiable card.
Warranty and returns A stated warranty and a return process that applies in your region. Storage faults are easier to resolve when the seller and manufacturer provide a clear remedy.
Current price The price at the time you buy, including any regional or retailer conditions. Prices change independently of Call of Duty’s storage requirement, so a current quote is necessary for a fair comparison.

There is no responsible universal capacity recommendation without the live listing for your edition. Select a size that leaves practical room beyond the displayed requirement, especially if you expect to keep multiple updates or DLC packages installed.

If Call of Duty still will not install or load

Escalate only after the console-side conditions have been checked: the Switch 2 has internet access, Call of Duty is closed, download progress has been refreshed, the console has been restarted if needed, and the available storage meets the current requirement. This sequence separates a general console or network condition from a title-specific failure.

  1. Open Activision Support.
  2. Select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 if that is the title shown for your account, or choose the applicable current Call of Duty title.
  3. Set the platform to Nintendo Switch 2.
  4. Choose the category that matches the symptom: installation or setup, update, DLC, or My game won’t load or install.
  5. Sign in if the portal requests account access for recommended options, and include the exact console message, title, edition, and step at which the failure remains.

Choosing the closest category matters because installation, update, DLC, and loading failures can have different article paths. If the portal offers a title-specific error-code article, follow that article rather than applying a generic fix to an unrelated code.

Use this decision path for repeated failures

If you have already tried several times, stop repeating the same action and identify which condition is still unresolved.

  • The download begins immediately after closing the game: the running software was pausing the queue. Keep Call of Duty closed until the transfer completes.
  • The queue resumes only after a restart: the download state needed to be refreshed through a reboot. Recheck the network if the problem returns.
  • The queue moves but remains slow: use the Switch 2 internet connection test instead of deleting and reinstalling the game.
  • The console reports insufficient space: verify the live listing, remove unused content, or add a compatible microSD Express card. Do not substitute an old file-size estimate.
  • All console checks pass but the title still will not install or load: move to the Activision Support flow for Nintendo Switch 2 and the applicable Call of Duty edition.

This path avoids destructive troubleshooting. A stalled transfer does not, by itself, justify deleting save data or removing the entire game.

Common mistakes that make the problem look worse

  • Playing while waiting for the download: Nintendo warns that downloads can pause for some software being played. Close Call of Duty before judging the queue.
  • Using a fixed installation-size claim: requirements vary by game and can change with updates, editions, regions, and DLC. Check the package or eShop each time.
  • Buying a card without checking the Express requirement: Nintendo’s supported Switch 2 expansion guidance specifically identifies microSD Express.
  • Deleting save data as a storage shortcut: the cited storage guidance supports removing unused software or other content and does not establish save-data deletion as necessary.
  • Retrying without testing a slow connection: repeated retries do not repair an unstable network. Use the console’s connection test when progress is slow.
  • Assuming one error-code fix fits every release: use the Activision article or category for the selected title and platform.

What to record before contacting support

Good details make the support handoff more useful and prevent you from having to repeat basic checks. Record the Call of Duty title and edition shown on the console or in eShop, whether the problem occurs during the initial download, an update, DLC, or loading, the exact wording of any error, and whether the download changes after the game is closed. Also note that you confirmed internet access, refreshed Update Download Progress, restarted the Switch 2 when needed, and checked the current storage requirement.

Do not report a guessed file size as a fact. If storage is involved, provide the requirement currently displayed for your edition and the free space available after removing unused content or inserting a compatible microSD Express card. This keeps the case tied to the version and region actually affected.

Why these fixes are the right order

Closing the game addresses Nintendo’s documented pause behavior without altering installed data. Refreshing download progress and restarting target the console’s queued-transfer state. Testing the internet connection distinguishes slow delivery from a software queue that is not advancing. Checking the live requirement prevents an otherwise healthy install from failing because the available space is lower than the current package needs. Finally, Activision Support is the appropriate escalation point when those Nintendo Switch 2 conditions are satisfied but the Call of Duty title still fails.
