When autofill inserts an old password or the wrong account, first identify which credential manager supplied it. Then open that manager, find the website entry, verify the username or email, and select, edit, or remove only the incorrect login. If the right login is missing, check the browser profile, sync account, imported records, and any separate password-manager extension before changing browser data.
Why autofill chooses the wrong login
Autofill is not always controlled by the browser window you are looking at. A credential can come from the browser’s local password store, an account-synced password manager, or a separate password-manager extension or device service. Mozilla notes that third-party password software can affect how Firefox handles saved usernames and passwords, so deleting a browser entry without identifying the source may leave the wrong suggestion in place.
A single website can also have several legitimate logins. For example, a personal and a work account may share the same sign-in page. Firefox explicitly lets you choose between multiple saved accounts, and other managers may present a similar list. The visible email or username matters more than the site name: confirm it before filling or deleting anything.
There are two different problems that look alike:
- Wrong saved record: the manager has stored an obsolete password or a different username.
- Changed or rejected credential: the saved password was correct when stored, but the website later changed it, locked the account, or rejected the sign-in for another reason.
If the website rejects the credential, stop repeatedly submitting it. Use that site’s account-recovery process, then update the saved record after the new password works.

Use this five-minute troubleshooting sequence
- Watch the suggestion UI. Note whether the suggestion is labeled by Chrome, Firefox, Edge, a password-manager extension, or a device password service. Check the browser’s enabled extensions before deleting any entries.
- Open the supplying manager. Search for the website by its domain, service name, or app name. An imported login may be filed under a different name from the page you are visiting.
- Inspect every matching entry. Compare each username or email with the account you intend to use. Reveal a password only after the manager’s identity check, and do so on a trusted device.
- Choose or correct one record. Select the intended account if several are listed. Edit the username or password, accept the manager’s update prompt after a successful sign-in, or remove only the obsolete entry.
- Verify settings and profile state. Make sure password autofill is enabled, that you are using the expected browser profile, and that the relevant sync setting is on. Then reload the sign-in page and test the intended record.
- Escalate only when necessary. If the correct record exists but is not offered, try selecting it directly from the password field or opening it from the manager. If the page still does not recognize the fields, use the site’s recovery flow rather than repeatedly submitting a rejected password.
Find out where the credential is stored
Before making changes, classify the source. This prevents a cycle in which you delete a browser entry while an extension immediately fills the same old password again.

In Firefox, Mozilla recommends checking third-party password-manager software when browser storage behaves unexpectedly. Do not clear all cookies, history, or saved passwords as a first step; that can remove useful sessions and records without fixing the source.
Fix the entry in Chrome
Open Google Password Manager
Chrome’s password controls let you edit or remove saved passwords. Open Chrome’s profile and password controls, then open Google Password Manager. You can also manage passwords saved to your Google Account at passwords.google.com. The exact button names can move between Chrome releases, but the destination is the password manager rather than the general browsing-data deletion screen.
- Open the Chrome menu and go to the profile or password controls.
- Open Google Password Manager and search for the website or service.
- Open each matching record and compare the stored username with the account you want.
- Use the record’s edit control to correct the username or password, or remove that one obsolete record.
- Return to the sign-in page, reload it, and select the corrected account.
Chrome’s official guidance covers editing and removing saved passwords and troubleshooting suggestions at Chrome Help. If an imported login seems absent, search by the app or service name as well as the website address. Imported names do not always appear under the label you expect.

When Chrome does not show the right suggestion
Chrome may fail to offer a saved password when it cannot detect the page’s username and password fields. Open Google Password Manager directly to confirm that the record exists, then click the password field on the page and look for a manual suggestion. A page that uses an embedded sign-in frame, an unusual field structure, or a nonstandard login flow may not expose fields Chrome can recognize.
If the record is present but the site rejects it, treat that as a website-account problem, not an autofill problem. Complete the site’s password-reset or account-recovery process, sign in successfully, and then allow Chrome to update the saved password.
Correct multiple or outdated logins in Firefox
Select the intended account
Firefox Password Manager can store more than one login for the same site. Mozilla describes the selection behavior directly: “If you have more than one login for a site, you can just select the account you want and we’ll take it from there.” Open the Firefox password manager, locate the site, and choose the entry whose username or email matches the account you need. - Open the Firefox menu and choose the Passwords or Logins and Passwords area.
- Search for the site and open the matching record.
- Verify the username before changing anything.
- Edit the stored username or password, or delete only the obsolete record.
- Alternatively, enter the correct credentials on the site and accept Firefox’s prompt to update the saved login after the sign-in succeeds.
Mozilla documents these edit, delete, and update workflows in Firefox Password Manager help. If you remove a record, make sure you still know the current password or have another recovery method before doing so.

Check the Firefox profile and Sync
Firefox logins are associated with a browser profile. If the expected entries appear to have vanished, confirm that Firefox opened the profile where you originally saved them. Then check the account’s Sync settings and make sure Logins and Passwords is selected. Firefox’s saved credentials are separate from credentials stored in Google Password Manager, so signing in to a Google account does not by itself make Firefox entries appear.

Check Edge’s password and autofill controls
In Microsoft Edge, Microsoft’s documented path is Settings > Passwords and autofill > Microsoft Password Manager. The manager includes an Autofill passwords and passkeys toggle. If it is off, Edge will not automatically fill stored credentials. Turn it on only if you want Edge to offer saved passwords and passkeys.

Edge can require device-based authentication before showing or filling a saved password. A security prompt at that point is a privacy control, not evidence that the password is wrong. Complete the device check, inspect the saved username, and then choose the intended account. Microsoft explains these controls in Keep your saved passwords private in Microsoft Edge.

If Edge keeps filling a record you do not recognize, check whether an extension or another device password service is also enabled. Disable competing autofill providers temporarily, one at a time, to identify which service is supplying the suggestion; do not delete all saved credentials during this test.

Search by more than the visible domain
Imported credentials may use an application name, a subdomain, or a service label instead of the address shown in the browser bar. Search the manager for the site’s brand or app name, the parent domain, and any subdomain you have used. In Chrome, Google specifically recommends searching the Password Manager when an imported login is difficult to locate; see Manage passwords in Chrome.
Confirm the account and profile
Check which Google, Firefox, Microsoft, or other manager account is signed in. A different account can have a different set of saved credentials. In Firefox, switch to the profile that normally contains the login and verify that Logins and Passwords is included in Sync. On a shared computer, another browser profile may be the one that originally stored the account.

Inspect the browser’s extensions page and the device’s password-provider settings. A third-party manager can fill a form before the browser’s own manager gets a chance, or it can display a second list of accounts. Once you identify the active provider, make the correction there and decide whether the browser’s duplicate entry should remain.

Consider field-detection failure
A correct record can exist without appearing on a particular page. Chrome documents that it may not suggest a password when it cannot detect the page’s login fields; Mozilla likewise lists disabled autofill and third-party software among possible causes. Try clicking the username or password field and selecting the stored suggestion manually. If the page uses a special sign-in window or embedded form, open the service’s normal login page instead.
Separate an autofill error from an account lockout
Autofill can only supply the text stored in a record; it cannot tell whether a website has since changed the password. If the username is correct but the site reports an incorrect password, expired credential, locked account, or required verification, stop testing variations. Use the website’s password-reset or account-recovery option, complete any email, authenticator, or device checks it requests, and sign in with the new password manually once.
After a successful sign-in, update the manager’s record. Firefox may prompt to save the new password, and Chrome provides an edit or update path in Google Password Manager. If the site has several accounts, make sure the updated record is attached to the right username; changing the password on the wrong entry can make future autofill more confusing.
Keep multiple accounts from colliding
- Use a clear username or email label for each saved record.
- Keep separate work and personal browser profiles when the same service is used for both.
- Delete only records that are confirmed obsolete; retain a second legitimate account if you still need it.
- After changing a password, update the manager immediately rather than saving another entry with an ambiguous name.
- On shared devices, require the browser or password manager’s device authentication before viewing or filling passwords.
These practices address the selection problem without exposing credentials or erasing unrelated browsing data.
What not to do
- Do not clear all browser data first. Broad deletion can remove sessions, saved logins, and preferences while leaving a third-party autofill provider untouched.
- Do not assume the visible browser profile owns the suggestion. Check extensions, account sync, and device password services.
- Do not delete every login for the site. Verify the username or email and preserve accounts that are still valid.
- Do not keep submitting a rejected password. Use account recovery when the website, rather than the manager, is rejecting the credential.
- Do not copy menu paths between browsers. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge use different managers and labels, and those labels can change with releases.
If the problem persists
Record the exact symptom: which provider displayed the suggestion, which username appeared, whether the manager contains the expected entry, and what error the website returned. Then work from that evidence:
- If the wrong username appears, edit or remove that specific record in the provider that supplied it.
- If the right record exists but is not offered, check autofill settings, profile or account state, competing extensions, and field detection.
- If no record exists anywhere, recover the account through the website and save the new credential only after a successful sign-in.
- If two providers both fill the form, choose one as the primary manager and disable the other provider for that site or browser session.
For current browser-specific labels, use the official documentation for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. Safari’s controls and iCloud Passwords behavior use a separate Apple-specific workflow; do not apply Chrome or Firefox menu instructions to Safari.
