If a desktop shortcut still opens its app but shows a blank white icon, the shortcut may be intact and Windows’ icon display is the problem. Microsoft’s documented sequence is to reset the icon cache first, then re-register Shell Experience Host if needed; checking the shortcut’s registry mapping is a more advanced step.
First, check whether the shortcut still works
Double-click one of the blank shortcuts. If the app opens, focus on restoring its icon rather than reinstalling Windows or the app. Microsoft says application shortcuts on the desktop, Start menu, and taskbar can show blank icons because of an icon-cache issue or a shortcut IconHandler registry mapping. Its troubleshooting article was last updated February 12, 2026, and applies to supported Windows Client versions without naming specific Windows 10 or 11 releases: Microsoft’s blank-icons troubleshooting guide.
1. Reset the Windows icon cache
Save open work first. Ending Windows Explorer interrupts the Windows shell while you clear the cache, so the taskbar and desktop may temporarily disappear. Follow Microsoft’s documented sequence:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Under Processes, right-click Windows Explorer and select End task.
- In Task Manager, select File > Run new task. Enter
cmd.exe, select the option to create the task with administrative privileges, and start it. - In Command Prompt, run these commands one at a time:
CD /d %userprofile%AppDataLocal DEL IconCache.db /a - In Task Manager, select File > Run new task again. Enter
explorer.exeand press Enter. - Wait for Windows to rebuild the icon cache, then check the affected shortcuts.
These commands and the Explorer restart are Microsoft’s documented cache-reset procedure. If the icons remain blank, continue to the next step.

2. Re-register Shell Experience Host
Use this escalation only if resetting the icon cache did not restore the icons. Open PowerShell as an administrator, run the following command, and restart Windows afterward:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Where-Object {$_.InstallLocation -like "*ShellExperienceHost*"} | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}
Microsoft lists this after clearing the cache in its blank-icon troubleshooting instructions.

3. Check the shortcut’s IconHandler registry mapping
This is an advanced check. Microsoft warns that incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems. Back up the registry before editing, and do not change unrelated values. If you are not comfortable working in Registry Editor, stop here and get help.
In Registry Editor, inspect HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTlnkfileshellexIconHandler. Note the default CLSID shown there. Microsoft’s example is {00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}; use the CLSID actually present in your first key when checking the associated entries.

Compare the entries with Microsoft’s registry guidance. Do not substitute the example CLSID for a different value found on your PC.

4. Compare with a newly created shortcut
If only one desktop shortcut is affected, create another shortcut to the same app or file and compare its icon. This can help distinguish a problem limited to that shortcut from a broader icon-display problem; creating a new one is a diagnostic check, not a Microsoft-confirmed blank-icon fix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- For an app, open Start > All, then drag the app to the desktop.
- For a file or folder, right-click it, select Show more options > Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
Microsoft documents these shortcut-creation options in its Windows desktop icon customization guide, which applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 notes
Microsoft’s blank-icon troubleshooting article does not identify a particular Windows 10 or Windows 11 build as the cause. Its separate desktop customization guidance covers both operating systems. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that support-status change does not, by itself, explain blank shortcut icons.
