A blank login screenshot usually means the browser captured the wrong state, not that the page contains no content. Before taking the image, verify the final URL, wait for a visible authenticated control, confirm that the same browser context has the right cookies or storage state, and test a normal viewport capture. Only then switch to full-page or element screenshots.
Use this diagnosis order
- Print the URL immediately before capture. If it is still the identity provider, a login-error page, or an unexpected redirect target, fix navigation or credentials first.
- Wait for an authenticated condition. Assert the final post-login URL and a visible dashboard, profile control, or other signed-in element. A successful navigation event alone does not prove that the interface is ready.
- Check the browser context. The cookies and web storage used by the screenshot must belong to the intended account and environment.
- Capture the viewport first. Then test an element target or
fullPage: trueif the content is outside the viewport or sits inside a large scrollable surface. - Check rendering options. Device scale, background handling, and the selected target can make a real page look empty.
- Compare the image with the DOM or accessibility tree. If a visible assertion succeeds but the image is blank, the problem is probably capture scope or rendering rather than authentication.
Why a login page can be loaded but still screenshot as white
The browser stopped at a redirect
Login flows commonly cross an identity provider, callback route, consent page, and application route. Cookies can be set during several redirects. A screenshot taken after the first navigation may therefore show an intermediate page or a route that has no application content.
Record page.url() after login and compare it with the URL you actually expect. Do not treat “navigation completed” as equivalent to “the user is signed in.”

Modern pages continue fetching data, running scripts, and populating components after the load event. A fixed sleep is also fragile: it may be too short on a busy run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Use a condition that represents the page state you need, such as a final URL plus a visible authenticated control.

The screenshot target does not include the content
A viewport screenshot records what is in the current viewport. An element screenshot records only the selected node, and a full-page screenshot expands the capture to the page’s scrollable height. A selector that matches a hidden shell, an empty wrapper, or the wrong account’s dashboard can produce an apparently blank image even when another part of the page is visible.
Authentication belongs to another context
Cookies and storage are scoped to a browser context. Logging in one context and capturing in a new context loses that state unless you explicitly save and reuse it. Treat saved authentication files as secrets: they can contain cookies and headers that impersonate the test account.
Scale or background settings change the appearance
Device scale affects pixel dimensions, while transparent backgrounds can make a white interface appear empty when viewed against a white image viewer. Test with a normal opaque background and the default scale before changing those options.

}If your application does not use a dashboard heading, choose a stable signed-in signal: a profile menu, account email, logout button, or a data table that only authenticated users can see. Prefer a semantic role or test identifier over a styling class that changes frequently.
Wait for the final URL and the UI, not a timer
Use waitForURL when the destination is predictable. If query strings or tenant-specific paths vary, wait for a URL pattern and assert the visible control separately. If the page is known to make a request that determines readiness, you can also wait for that response, but keep a visible UI assertion so a successful network response cannot mask a rendering failure.
Reuse authenticated storage safely
After a verified login, save the context state and use it in later runs:

Choose the right capture scope

For an element capture, wait for that exact element and make sure it has dimensions:

Debug a blank result with evidence
Log the state at the capture boundary
- Current URL and page title.
- Whether the authenticated locator is visible.
- The viewport width and height.
- The bounding box of the target element.
- Whether the context was created with the intended storage state.
These values tell you whether the failure is navigation, authentication, layout, or screenshot scope.

Take a DOM assertion or accessibility snapshot alongside the screenshot. If the signed-in control is present in the DOM and has a non-zero bounding box, but the PNG is empty, inspect CSS, clipping, device scale, and background options. If the assertion fails too, keep debugging login and readiness rather than the image encoder.

Check nested scrolling and overlays
Single-page applications often put the dashboard in a scrollable panel while the document itself remains short. A document-level full-page capture may therefore omit the panel’s lower content. Capture the panel element, scroll it deliberately before a viewport screenshot, or change the application test layout so the important content is in the document flow. Also check whether a consent dialog, modal, or loading overlay covers the authenticated UI.

Make the capture reproducible
- Use a fixed viewport and explicitly choose light or dark color scheme.
- Use the same browser context for login and capture, or load a state file created for that environment.
- Capture a viewport image first; add full-page or element images only when they answer a different question.
- Use stable selectors and assert visibility immediately before the screenshot.
- Keep credentials and storage-state files secret and rotate them when sessions expire.
- Record the URL, target selector, viewport, scale, and readiness condition with each artifact so a failure can be reproduced.
