First check whether the audio is offset by the same amount throughout or drifts farther out of sync over time. A constant offset usually calls for realigning a clip or correcting an edit that moved one track independently. Increasing drift points instead to recording latency or a sample-rate mismatch; moving the clip once will not correct a speed difference.
Diagnose the sync problem before moving anything
Compare a clear event near the beginning with another later in the recording. Look for a clap, a strong consonant, a waveform spike, or a visible mouth movement if video is involved.
- The offset stays about the same: A clip or track may have moved independently during a cut or rearrangement. Check the affected regions and edit boundaries.
- The offset grows over time: Suspect different recording or playback speeds, including a sample-rate mismatch, rather than a single misplaced clip.
- Only certain sections are wrong: Inspect which tracks were selected, linked, locked, or included in each ripple operation. Correct the affected join instead of shifting the entire recording.
These patterns help narrow down the cause, but they do not prove it. Check the project, source media, and your editor’s behavior before making a broad timing change.
Protect the project, then realign affected clips
Save a working copy or duplicate the sequence before making major timing changes. In Audacity, Duplicate places a copy on a new track at the same timeline position, so you can experiment without losing the original. Undo can reverse recent edits in the current session, but it is not a substitute for a recoverable copy.

- Share Audio Port: With a shared audio port, easily connect another pair to share music or videos—no splitters or special cables needed.
- Find a reliable shared event, such as a clap, slate, plosive, waveform spike, or visible mouth movement.
- Zoom in at the event and move the affected clip or audio segment until the event lines up. In Audacity, drag a clip by its header; waveform spikes can help locate a clap or knock. In Premiere Pro, clips can be dragged into place on the Timeline.
- Check another event farther along the recording. If it lines up too, the problem was likely a constant placement offset. If not, investigate drift before making more adjustments.
For separately recorded material, Premiere Pro’s Timeline Synchronize command can use Clip Start, Clip End, Timecode, Clip Marker, or an audio track channel as the reference, where applicable. See Adobe’s Synchronize clips in the Timeline panel. If there is no suitable shared reference, align clips manually and verify more than one point.
Choose the right ripple behavior for future edits
A normal deletion can leave a gap, preserving later timeline positions. A ripple deletion closes the gap by moving later material earlier. The important question is which tracks the operation affects: a per-track ripple can shift one track relative to others, while an all-track ripple can keep their timing together.

Audacity: leave a gap or ripple across tracks
Audacity’s Basic audio editing guide explains that “Leave a gap” keeps other material in place and preserves timing across tracks. Choose it when you want to remove audio without shifting what follows.
When you want to close a gap while keeping separate tracks aligned, Audacity documents Ctrl+Delete (or Ctrl+Backspace) for ripple-deleting across every track. Shift+Delete closes the gap per track, so it may change that track’s timing relative to others. Confirm shortcuts in your installed version. Audacity prompts for deletion behavior the first time, then keeps that choice as the default; you can change it in preferences. The Edit manual describes the deletion options and shortcuts.

Premiere Pro: check Sync Lock on tracks that should follow edits
In Premiere Pro, enable Sync Lock on the audio and video tracks that should move with timeline insertions, ripple deletes, or ripple trims. Adobe explains that tracks directly included in an operation move regardless of Sync Lock; other tracks move only when Sync Lock is enabled. Check the track-level Sync Lock icons before editing. Track locking is a separate control for preventing changes to tracks that should not move.
See Adobe’s Sync Lock guidance. Interface details can vary by Premiere release and region. After changing the setting, try a small reversible edit and check every track that should stay aligned.

Other editors: confirm the scope before repeating the edit
Do not assume “ripple delete” affects all tracks in every application. Check the editor’s current manual for track selection, link and lock behavior, and whether a ripple operation affects one track, selected tracks, or all tracks. A setting that works as intended in one editor may have a different scope in another.

Audacity distinguishes a constant recording delay from progressive drift. Its recording troubleshooting FAQ says computer overdubs are not recorded at the exact instant the performer responds. Audacity applies recording-latency correction automatically, though further adjustment may be needed.

A sample-rate mismatch is a different problem: if Audacity, the operating system, and the sound device use mismatched rates, tracks can play or record at different speeds. The timing error then grows with duration, so a one-time clip shift cannot fix the whole recording. Check the source track rate, project rate, and device settings. If existing audio needs resampling to the project rate, keep an untouched copy first and verify the result across the full recording.
Quick Recap
Verify the repair from the edit to the end
- Play from before the first affected cut through the end; watch a clear visual cue if video is involved.
- Listen around each edited join and compare events near both the start and end of long recordings.
- If the offset changes over time, return to the drift diagnosis. If only one join is wrong, repair that region rather than shifting the whole track.
- Check the exported or rendered playback as well as the timeline preview when delivering the project.
