First identify whether the mismatch is a steady offset, drift that gets worse over time, dropped frames, or a problem limited to some viewers. A fixed source offset can usually be corrected at the early audio or video source; a growing mismatch needs investigation of device timing and buffering. Check the result on YouTube playback, not just in OBS preview.

Diagnose what kind of sync problem you have

Use a visible action paired with a sharp sound, such as a hand clap, and compare several moments. Note whether the mismatch is present from the start, stays roughly constant, increases over time, or occurs only for some viewers. Where possible, compare a local OBS recording with the delivered YouTube playback. This comparison helps locate the stage where the problem appears; it is a diagnostic approach, not a universal test protocol prescribed by YouTube or OBS.

  • Steady offset: the sound and picture are consistently out of alignment by about the same amount.
  • Growing drift: alignment worsens as the stream runs, suggesting timing or device behavior rather than a simple fixed offset.
  • Intermittent stutter or dropped frames: investigate capture smoothness and network/bitrate capacity separately from a steady sync offset.
  • Viewer-specific trouble: if only one viewer or location reports the issue, check that viewer’s network and playback device before changing the source timing.

Repeat the observation after the period when the issue normally appears. A short startup check may miss drift in a continuous broadcast.

Correct a stable offset at the source that is early

Audio is heard before the matching picture

Delay the affected audio source by a measured amount. Adjust only the source that is early; a microphone, camera audio, media source, and capture device can each have different timing. OBS’s official audio-source guide documents audio source behavior, but the cited official guidance does not specify a universal menu path or offset value for every setup.

Picture appears before the matching sound

Delay the relevant video source using OBS’s Render Delay filter. OBS documents this filter as delaying source-image rendering and identifies syncing a webcam image to microphone audio as a use case. Apply it to the source that needs delaying, then repeat the same clap or motion test. Do not add the same arbitrary delay to every source.

Investigate drift that increases over time

A fixed offset can correct a stable difference, but it cannot compensate for a mismatch that keeps changing. Check whether audio and video come from separate devices, whether the problem also appears in a local recording, and whether capture-device buffering is involved.

Test device timestamps where available

OBS documents a Windows-only Use Device Timestamps option for audio input/output capture. It attempts to use device timing to prevent desynchronization, and the setting is off by default in the cited OBS guide. Test it with the specific device rather than treating it as a guaranteed fix; compare sync over a sustained run before and after the change.

Test capture buffering one setting at a time

OBS’s video capture source guidance says disabling buffering may help when a device is delayed, while enabling buffering may help when playback stutters. The effect depends on the source type and operating system. Change one setting at a time and check both sync and smoothness: reducing delay can expose stutter on a device that relies on buffering.

Separate source sync from network and viewer buffering

Check OBS’s dropped-frame counters and YouTube’s stream-health warnings. OBS associates dropped frames with connection stability or insufficient bitrate capacity and directs users to connection troubleshooting. YouTube explains that congestion and player buffering can affect playback. If the source looks aligned locally but playback is impaired, investigate delivery and playback before applying a source offset.

YouTube stream latency is the delay between capture and viewer playback; it is not the same as source-level lip-sync error. Lower-latency playback gives the player less read-ahead buffer and can make buffering more likely. YouTube positions normal latency for non-interactive streams and says it offers the highest quality in terms of lower viewer buffering. Webcam and mobile streams do not have latency choices in the same way. Changing latency may affect end-to-end delay and robustness, but it is not a direct cure for audio that consistently leads its matching picture.

Verify the fix on the delivered stream

  1. Make a private or unlisted test before changing a public 24/7 broadcast, if your channel setup permits.
  2. Match the production setup: use the same camera, microphone, capture card, media, frame rate, and scene composition.
  3. Test representative sound and movement. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream and monitoring stream health; OBS also recommends a pre-stream test.
  4. Run long enough to reproduce the fault. OBS’s quick-start advice calls for testing settings for a few minutes; for a continuous stream, extend the check to the time when drift usually appears. This extension is practical advice, not a published platform requirement.
  5. Change one variable at a time and compare the YouTube playback, not only the local preview. Record the observed offset, the source or setting changed, test duration, and whether alignment held.

Avoid changing source offset, latency, buffering, and bitrate simultaneously. If the result changes, one-at-a-time tests make it possible to identify which adjustment helped.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your 24/7 stream uses uploaded videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. Each slot plays uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
