On the unfolded Galaxy Z Fold 8, try changing the affected app’s aspect-ratio setting first: open Settings > Apps > [app] > App aspect ratios, choose a different option, then close and reopen the app. Menu labels can vary by software version; Samsung’s general support route is Settings > Display > Full screen apps > Aspect ratio, then select the app and choose Full screen or App default. If filling the screen merely makes a phone layout look wider, try the supported app’s multi-pane view instead.
Change the app’s aspect-ratio setting
Make the adjustment with the phone unfolded, so you are checking the app on the inner display. Current Fold 8-specific reporting describes this route:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then select the app that looks wrong.
- Tap App aspect ratios and choose another available option.
- Close and reopen the app, then check whether its content and controls fit better.
If that menu is not present, Samsung’s general support instructions give a different path: Settings > Display > Full screen apps > Aspect ratio, select the app, then choose Full screen or App default. Samsung cautions that options depend on the model and software, and that some apps may not support full-screen view. Check the labels on your phone rather than assuming the two paths appear identically. Samsung Support: Apps are not full screen on Samsung phone; SamMobile’s Fold 8-specific report.

- Try Full screen if the app is letterboxed or uses only a narrow part of the inner display. It may use more of the panel, but it cannot guarantee a tablet-friendly interface.
- Try App default if the app looks enlarged or distorted, or if buttons or other controls are clipped. This may better preserve the app’s intended behavior.
There is no universally best choice: judge each result by how much of the screen the app uses, whether content is cropped or distorted, and whether its controls remain usable. SamMobile reports that selecting Full Screen for Hearthstone changes it from a phone-style interface to the game’s built-in tablet/desktop UI. That is one app-specific example, not a result to expect from every app.

Use a multi-pane layout when filling the screen is not enough
If the app occupies the inner screen but still looks like one stretched phone column, the issue may be its layout rather than the amount of screen it fills. For supported apps, Samsung documents Multi view under Settings > Display > Screen layout and zoom > Multi view. Samsung gives Samsung Settings and Samsung Messages as examples of apps that can use multi-pane presentation; availability depends on the app.
For developers designing large-screen interfaces, Samsung recommends a 50:50 split for Z Fold devices. That is design guidance, not a guarantee that every app exposes a split-screen option or that this ratio is right for every task. Work out whether the problem is the app or the phone
- Compare displays: Check the same app on the cover display and another app on the inner screen. If the awkward layout is limited to one app, that points toward app-specific behavior, though it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Check for updates: Install available app and system updates, then reopen the app. A developer may need to improve its responsive or large-screen layout if settings do not help.
- Check feature support: Samsung says some apps may not support Full screen, and options can vary with model and software. The Multi view option also applies only to supported apps.
- Do not confuse Flex Mode with aspect-ratio controls: Samsung’s foldable support page says Flex Mode is not supported on the Z Fold8. It is not the setting to change for an awkward inner-screen layout.
Why some apps still look wrong
A setting can change how an app occupies the display, but it cannot make the app’s interface adapt intelligently. Samsung’s developer guidance explains that a stretched single-pane app can waste the extra space and be harder to read; a multi-pane layout is often more useful for content-dense apps than simply filling every pixel.

Android 16 introduces changes affecting orientation, aspect ratio, and resizability for apps targeting API level 36 on qualifying displays with a smallest width of at least 600 dp. The rules have exceptions, including games and certain smaller displays, and an opt-out is documented. This does not mean every Fold 8 app is automatically forced into a resizable layout. Android warns that apps restricting these behaviors can have display problems such as overlapping layouts. Android Developers: App orientation, aspect ratio, and resizability.

Why older Galaxy Fold instructions may not match
Some older guides describe Labs controls such as Customized App Aspect Ratios or Multi Window for all apps. Samsung’s One UI 3.1.1 announcement, published on August 31, 2021, describes those controls for the Fold3, Fold2, and original Fold; it does not verify that the same menus exist on the Fold 8. Use the current settings visible on your device instead of relying on those older paths. Samsung Global Newsroom: One UI 3.1.1 foldable features.
If changing the aspect ratio and any available Multi view setting does not make the app usable, report the problem to its developer with the app version and a description of what is clipped, stretched, or difficult to use. The app may need a layout change that a phone setting cannot provide.
