If your Apple Watch has stopped tapping your wrist, start on the watch itself: open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose Default or Prominent, not Off. Then check the affected app in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, make sure the watch is snug and touching your skin, and confirm that the notification is enabled for the watch. Silent Mode normally silences sound without disabling haptic notifications. If those checks do not restore an expected tap, Apple says the watch might need service.
Start with the alert-haptics setting
Apple Watch uses a setting called Haptics for alert taps. If it is set to Off, the watch will not provide those wrist taps even when an app notification is otherwise configured correctly. This is the first check because it applies across the watch rather than to one individual app.
- On the Apple Watch, open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Haptics.
- Select Default or Prominent.
After changing the setting, test the alert that originally appeared to be missing. The two available alert levels are not identical:

| Default | Uses Apple’s normal alert-tap behavior. | The appropriate baseline for troubleshooting. |
| Prominent | Adds an extra tap that pre-announces some other haptic alerts. | Useful when the normal tap is easy to miss. |
Apple describes Prominent as adding an extra tap before some other haptic alerts; it is not a repair mode and it cannot restore feedback from a failed hardware component. It is useful as a test: if you can feel the additional pre-announcing tap but not every expected alert, continue checking notification delivery and the relevant app.

The setting is documented in Apple’s audio and notification settings guide. If the menu already shows Default or Prominent, do not keep switching between those choices as though one were a hardware reset. Move to the app and fit checks instead.
Check the particular app or alert
A watch-wide haptic setting does not guarantee that every app will send a notification to the watch. Apple provides per-app controls on the paired iPhone, and the exact controls can differ by app and software version.
- Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Open Sounds & Haptics.
- Review the settings for the app or alert that is not tapping.
Look at the specific category that is failing rather than changing unrelated settings. For example, a missing message tap calls for a review of message-notification controls, while a missing call tap calls for the call-related controls. The labels and available options may vary with the app and the installed software, so do not assume that every app presents the same switches.
Also verify that the event is one the watch is supposed to receive. A haptic cannot occur for a notification that is disabled for the watch or not enabled for that app. If only one app is affected while other alerts still tap normally, that pattern points first to the app’s notification configuration rather than the watch-wide Haptics control.
Use a working app as a comparison. If a calendar or call alert still taps but messages do not, the watch’s general haptic output and skin contact are probably present; concentrate on the message settings. Conversely, if no app produces a tap, return to the watch-wide setting and fit checks before spending time in one app’s menu.
Make sure the watch is touching your skin
Apple recommends a snug, comfortable fit with the back of the watch against your skin. A loose band can allow the case to move away from your wrist, making a tap difficult to feel even when the software setting is correct.
- Wear the watch firmly enough that the back remains in skin contact.
- Keep the fit comfortable; tightening it excessively is not the goal.
- Check the fit when the problem occurs, not only when the watch is sitting on a table.
- Check whether the watch has shifted while you were moving, exercising, or adjusting clothing.
- If your current band cannot maintain contact, a compatible replacement band is an optional fit solution, not a universal fix for haptic problems.
Apple’s wording is precise: “For the best haptic results, the back of your Apple Watch needs skin contact. Use a snug, but comfortable fit.” The same contact requirement also matters to wrist detection. Apple discusses fit, skin contact, and detection in its support guidance for unexpected Apple Watch locking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA band change should therefore be considered only after you have checked the Haptics setting and app configuration. A new band cannot turn alert haptics back on, enable a disabled notification, or repair a watch that needs service. If you do buy one, check compatibility with your exact Apple Watch case size and choose a band that keeps the back against your skin without being uncomfortable; Apple does not endorse a particular brand or model for this symptom.
Do not treat poor contact as proof that the haptic motor has failed. A watch that is slightly loose can still produce a tap that is simply too faint to notice. Correct the fit, then test a known enabled alert before drawing conclusions about hardware.
Do not confuse Silent Mode with Haptics Off
Silent Mode and the Haptics control affect different outputs. Silent Mode silences sounds, but Apple says haptic notifications can still be received. Therefore, enabling Silent Mode does not by itself explain why notification taps have stopped.
If you want a quiet watch that still taps your wrist, leave alert haptics set to Default or Prominent and use Silent Mode for sound suppression. If you want no taps, set Haptics to Off; changing Silent Mode alone is not equivalent.
This distinction helps explain seemingly contradictory reports. “There is no sound” does not mean “there is no haptic.” A watch in Silent Mode may be behaving normally if it remains quiet but still taps for an enabled notification. On the other hand, a watch that is silent and never taps should be checked for Haptics set to Off, an app-level notification block, or poor skin contact.

Identify which kind of haptic feedback is missing
“Haptics” is not one single feedback channel. Apple Watch separates notification alert taps from feedback produced by the Digital Crown and from feedback during system interactions. Changing one category does not repair another.
| Feedback category | What you feel | Relevant control | What it will not fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alert Haptics | Taps for calls, messages, and other alerts. | Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics, plus app-specific controls in the iPhone’s Apple Watch app. | Missing feedback while rotating the Digital Crown or using system controls. |
| Crown Haptics | Feedback as you rotate the Digital Crown. | The Crown Haptics control in the watch’s sound and haptic settings. | Notification taps from messages, calls, or apps. |
| System Haptics | Feedback associated with system interactions. | The System Haptics control in the watch’s sound and haptic settings. | Alert delivery from an individual app. |
Apple documents these distinctions in its Apple Watch volume and haptics guide. Begin by describing the symptom accurately: a watch that does not tap for an incoming notification has an alert-haptics problem; a crown that no longer provides rotational feedback has a Crown Haptics problem; a missing click or other interaction sensation belongs to System Haptics. This classification prevents changing the wrong control.
It is possible for one category to work while another does not. For example, the Digital Crown may still feel tactile while message alerts are silent, or alerts may tap while system interactions provide no sensation. Test and document each category separately instead of concluding that all haptic hardware is either working or broken.
Use a symptom-based check
The following sequence keeps each check tied to a specific failure pattern.
No alerts tap at all
- Confirm Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics is set to Default or Prominent.
- Check the watch’s fit so the back remains against your skin.
- In the iPhone’s Apple Watch app, review the notification settings for the apps from which you expect alerts.
- Confirm those notifications are actually enabled for the watch.
- Use a known expected alert for the test rather than an event that may not be configured to appear on the watch.
If all five conditions are satisfied and expected alerts still produce no tap, continue to the service section below. Do not infer that the watch is defective solely because one notification did not arrive; first establish that the notification should have been delivered to the watch.
Only one app fails to tap
Leave the watch-wide Haptics setting unchanged and inspect that app’s controls in Apple Watch app > My Watch > Sounds & Haptics. Because app options vary, compare the affected app with an app whose alerts work rather than assuming their menus are identical.
If changing the affected app’s notification control restores taps while other apps were unaffected, the symptom was app-specific. If no app taps after the app check, return to the general setting and contact checks rather than repeatedly editing the same app.
Sounds are absent but taps remain
This is consistent with Silent Mode: sound may be silenced while haptic notifications remain available. Do not set Haptics to Off merely to control sound.
The Digital Crown no longer feels tactile
Review Crown Haptics rather than notification settings. Alert Haptics control wrist taps for alerts and will not restore the Crown’s rotational feedback.
System controls have lost their tactile feedback
Review System Haptics. A change to an app’s alert setting is not the relevant control for feedback generated by system interactions.
Taps are intermittent or hard to notice
Check skin contact and fit before changing software settings again. Apple’s recommendation is snug but comfortable contact between the watch back and your wrist. Prominent can add an extra pre-announcing tap for some alerts, which may make a normal alert easier to notice, but it does not replace the fit check.
The watch locks or loses wrist detection while worn
Unexpected locking is a useful clue that contact is unreliable. Recheck that the back of the watch stays against your skin and that the band is snug but comfortable. Apple’s wrist-detection guidance identifies fit and skin contact as relevant factors. This check does not prove a haptic failure, but it can explain why taps are inconsistent.

What not to change during troubleshooting
Keep the investigation narrow. If the symptom is a missing message tap, changing Crown Haptics will not help. If the symptom is a missing Digital Crown sensation, changing an individual app’s notification setting will not help. Likewise, switching Silent Mode on and off is not a substitute for checking whether alert Haptics is Off.
Make one relevant change at a time and test an expected event after each change. This preserves a clear record of what fixed or failed to fix the symptom. The available Apple guidance does not provide a user procedure for opening the watch, replacing a haptic motor, or repairing internal components, so avoid DIY disassembly based on a settings problem.
What to do before contacting Apple
Service is the appropriate escalation when the expected alert is enabled, the correct haptic category is configured, and the watch is making reliable skin contact, yet the feedback remains absent. Apple’s support guidance says the watch might need service in that situation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before arranging service, record the exact symptom so the technician can investigate the correct subsystem:
- Whether the missing feedback is an alert tap, Crown Haptics, or System Haptics.
- Whether the problem affects every app or only one app.
- Whether sound behavior changed separately from haptic behavior.
- Which Haptics choice is currently selected: Off, Default, or Prominent.
- Whether the watch was worn snugly with its back against your skin during the test.
- Whether wrist detection or unexpected locking occurred at the same time.
- Which specific notification or interaction you used as the test.
Do not attempt a motor replacement or other internal repair based on these symptoms. The reviewed Apple guidance directs users toward service when settings and fit checks do not resolve the issue; it does not provide a user repair procedure.
A compatible band can be a reasonable purchase only when the existing band is loose, unsuitable, or unable to maintain skin contact. Treat it as an accessory for fit, not as a guaranteed repair. Verify the band’s compatibility with your exact case size before buying.
Compact checklist
- Watch setting: Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics is Default or Prominent, not Off.
- App setting: Apple Watch app on iPhone > My Watch > Sounds & Haptics has the affected app or alert enabled.
- Expected event: The notification is enabled for delivery to the watch.
- Contact: The watch back is touching skin with a snug, comfortable fit.
- Mode distinction: Silent Mode is not the same as Haptics Off.
- Category: Alert, Crown, and System Haptics are separate controls.
- Pattern: One-app failure points first to that app; all-alert failure calls for general setting and fit checks.
- Escalation: Persistent missing feedback after these checks may require Apple service.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my Apple Watch not vibrating for notifications?
Check Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and select Default or Prominent instead of Off. Then review the affected app in the iPhone’s Apple Watch app, confirm the notification is enabled for the watch, and make sure the watch back is touching your skin with a snug, comfortable fit.
Recommended Free Tools
Does Silent Mode turn off Apple Watch haptics?
No. Apple says Silent Mode silences sounds while haptic notifications can still be received. Silent Mode is therefore different from setting Haptics to Off.
What is the difference between Default and Prominent haptics?
Default uses normal alert-tap behavior. Prominent adds an extra tap that pre-announces some other haptic alerts. Prominent can make alerts easier to notice, but it cannot repair failed hardware or enable a disabled notification.
Why does my Apple Watch tap for some apps but not others?
App-specific notification controls may differ. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, then Sounds & Haptics, and review the affected app. If other apps still tap, the watch-wide Haptics setting is less likely to be the cause.
Can a loose Apple Watch band stop me feeling haptics?
Yes, a loose fit can move the watch back away from your skin and make taps difficult to feel. Apple recommends skin contact and a snug but comfortable fit. A compatible replacement band is optional if your current band cannot maintain that contact.

What are System Haptics on Apple Watch?
System Haptics provide feedback associated with system interactions. They are separate from Alert Haptics for calls and messages and from Crown Haptics for Digital Crown rotation.
Should I buy a new band to fix missing haptics?
Only if the current band is loose or unsuitable for maintaining skin contact. A band cannot turn Haptics back on, enable an app notification, or repair internal hardware. Check compatibility with your exact Apple Watch case size.
When should I contact Apple for service?
Contact Apple when you have selected Default or Prominent, checked the affected app and notification delivery, confirmed the correct haptic category, and worn the watch snugly against your skin, yet expected feedback remains absent. Apple says the watch might need service in that situation.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Can I replace the haptic motor myself?
Do not attempt an internal motor replacement based on these symptoms. Apple’s support guidance points to service after settings and fit checks and does not provide a user repair procedure.
Bottom line
Most Apple Watch haptic troubleshooting starts with the alert setting, the affected app’s notification controls, and physical skin contact. Use Prominent when you need an additional pre-alert tap, keep Silent Mode separate from haptic controls, and adjust Crown or System Haptics only when those are the feedback channels that have failed. If the correct settings and fit do not restore the expected feedback, arrange Apple service rather than attempting an internal repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Apple Watch not vibrating for notifications?
Set Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics to Default or Prominent, check the affected app in the iPhone’s Apple Watch app, confirm the notification is enabled for the watch, and ensure the watch back touches your skin with a snug, comfortable fit.
Does Silent Mode turn off Apple Watch haptics?
No. Silent Mode silences sounds, but haptic notifications can still be received. It is different from setting Haptics to Off.
What is the difference between Default and Prominent haptics?
Default uses normal alert taps. Prominent adds an extra tap that pre-announces some other haptic alerts; it does not repair hardware or enable notifications.
Why do some apps tap while another does not?
Review the affected app’s controls in Apple Watch app > My Watch > Sounds & Haptics. Per-app options and notification settings can differ.
Can a loose band make haptics hard to feel?
Yes. Apple recommends skin contact and a snug, comfortable fit. A compatible replacement band is optional if the current band cannot maintain contact.
Why doesn’t Crown Haptics fix notification taps?
Crown Haptics controls feedback while rotating the Digital Crown. Notification taps use Alert Haptics and app-specific notification controls.
When does an Apple Watch need haptic service?
If Default or Prominent is selected, app notifications are enabled, the correct haptic category is configured, and the watch is snug against your skin but expected feedback is still absent, Apple says it might need service.
The Bottom Line
Check alert Haptics, app notifications, and skin contact first. Keep Silent Mode separate from Haptics Off, distinguish Alert, Crown, and System Haptics, and seek Apple service if expected feedback remains absent after these checks.
