When Apple TV+ will not play on a smart TV, first determine whether the fault affects one title, the Apple TV app, every streaming app, or the TV’s internet connection. Try another Apple TV title and another streaming app, run the app’s built-in Video Troubleshooting check if available, pause competing internet use, restart the TV, and then update the app and TV firmware. This sequence fixes the common cases without immediately signing you out of every app or erasing TV settings.

Identify what is actually failing

“Apple TV+ is not working” can describe several different problems: one movie refuses to start, every Apple TV video buffers, the app freezes, sign-in fails, or the entire television has lost network access. The fastest diagnosis comes from two comparisons before changing settings.

Test What you observe Most likely scope
Play a different movie or show in the Apple TV app Only one title fails Title-specific playback or availability issue
Play a different movie or show in the Apple TV app Several Apple TV titles fail Apple TV app, account, device, or network issue
Open another streaming app Other apps also buffer or fail TV network connection, internet service, or TV software
Open another streaming app Other apps work normally Apple TV app or Apple-account-specific problem

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance recommends both comparisons, and Roku similarly advises trying other titles and checking the device connection. Menus and supported models vary by manufacturer, model, operating-system version, and country, so use the table to choose the branch rather than assuming every failure has the same cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write down the result of each test. For example, “two Apple TV titles fail, YouTube works, and the TV reports Wi-Fi connected” points toward an Apple TV app or account issue. “Every app buffers” points toward the TV, local network, or internet service instead. This simple record prevents repeating the same reset while speaking with support.

1. Run Apple TV’s built-in connection check

On supported smart TVs and streaming devices, the Apple TV app includes a guided network test. It checks the connection used for playback and presents on-screen steps.

  1. Open the Apple TV app.
  2. Open the app’s sidebar.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Choose Video Troubleshooting.
  5. Select Start and follow the instructions shown on the TV.

Apple documents this flow in its Video Troubleshooting guide. The option is not guaranteed to appear on every television, streaming device, country, or region. If you do not see it, continue with the connection and restart checks below rather than treating its absence as a fault.

Run the check while the problem is occurring, if possible. A test performed after the video starts normally may not capture intermittent congestion. Follow only the steps shown for your device; Apple’s screen prompts can differ from those on another brand or operating-system version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the TV’s internet connection

Confirm in the TV’s network settings that the television or streaming device is connected to the internet. If the TV reports “no internet,” reconnect Wi-Fi or check the wired connection using the manufacturer’s instructions. A device can show a connected Wi-Fi symbol while still being unable to reach streaming services, so test playback in another streaming app as well.

Pause large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, video calls, and other streaming sessions temporarily. Apple specifically notes that simultaneous internet use by several people can reduce the bandwidth available to Apple TV playback and recommends pausing competing activity when video quality is poor or playback stops. This is a diagnostic step, not a guarantee that a particular internet speed will always produce uninterrupted video.

Samsung lists 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K as troubleshooting reference figures in its guidance for Apple TV video that will not play or plays at low quality. These are Samsung’s undated support figures for its troubleshooting context, not a universal Apple requirement or a promise that every connection at those speeds will work.

A speed test can help show whether the connection is unusually slow, but it measures one moment and one test path. It does not prove that Wi-Fi signal quality, congestion, Apple’s service, the TV firmware, or title rights are working correctly. Use it alongside the two comparison tests instead of as a pass-or-fail guarantee.

If several household devices are using the connection, repeat the Apple TV test after pausing the heaviest activity. If the television is wired, check that the cable is seated; if it uses Wi-Fi, follow the TV maker’s instructions for reconnecting the network. Avoid changing router settings or buying new networking equipment until the comparisons show that the current connection is the limiting factor.

3. Restart the smart TV or streaming device

A restart clears temporary app and network state without deleting your installed apps or account settings. Use the television’s normal power control to turn it off, wait briefly, and turn it back on. If the Apple TV app runs on a separate streaming device, restart that device instead or as well. Apple recommends powering a smart TV or streaming device off and on for poor-quality or interrupted playback.

Roku’s Apple TV troubleshooting likewise directs users to check the connection and restart the Roku when the connection is good. After the device returns to its home screen, open Apple TV and test the same title again before changing deeper settings.

Restarting is deliberately earlier in this sequence than deleting the app, signing out, or resetting a hub. Those actions can create a second problem—lost credentials or changed settings—without fixing an underlying internet or service issue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Update Apple TV and the TV software

Apple TV app updates

Apple says the Apple TV app should generally update automatically on a compatible, internet-connected smart TV, streaming device, or game console. Leave the device connected to the internet and restart it after an update is applied. If your platform exposes an app-store update screen, use that platform’s standard update control; the label and location differ by manufacturer.

If an app-store page offers an update, note whether it completes successfully. An update that repeatedly fails can indicate insufficient connectivity or a platform problem; use the manufacturer’s support instructions rather than repeatedly deleting the app. Compatibility is model- and region-dependent, so an app listing on one television does not guarantee the same listing on another.

Television firmware updates

App compatibility can also depend on the TV’s system software. Samsung recommends checking TV firmware when its Apple TV app is not working. Open your manufacturer’s software-update section and install an offered update according to the model’s instructions. Do not assume a Samsung menu, Smart Hub procedure, or firmware package applies to another brand.

Updating the TV operating system is separate from updating the Apple TV app. A TV can have the newest app available for its platform while still needing a firmware update, or it can be fully updated while the platform no longer supports a particular app feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After either update, repeat both comparison tests. If another app now works but Apple TV still fails, keep the issue in the Apple-support branch. If several apps remain broken, keep working through the TV manufacturer’s network and software guidance.

5. Follow the Samsung-specific path only on Samsung TVs

Samsung’s support procedure is intended for Samsung televisions and projectors, not as a general smart-TV recipe. After trying another Apple TV title and another streaming app, Samsung directs users to check the internet connection and firmware, then proceed through its device-specific troubleshooting options.

Smart Hub reset: a last resort on affected Samsung models

A Smart Hub reset can address persistent app problems on some Samsung devices, but it has a significant side effect: it signs you out of apps and requires the TV’s PIN. You will need to sign back in and restore app settings afterward. Use it only when Samsung’s instructions for your exact model call for it, and record any account details you will need before starting. Do not apply Smart Hub instructions to a non-Samsung television.

Do not use a Smart Hub reset merely because one Apple TV title fails, because another app is temporarily buffering, or because a speed test is inconsistent. First establish that the fault is persistent, affects the platform rather than one title, and remains after a restart and updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. If you use Roku

Roku documents Apple TV sign-in and video-playback errors separately from the TV manufacturer’s controls. Its guidance says poor connectivity can cause both sign-in and playback problems; check the Roku’s network status and restart the Roku when the connection is good. The Apple TV app is available only on compatible Roku streaming devices, and Roku notes that not every Roku model supports it.

If the built-in TV app remains unreliable, a compatible Roku streaming device can provide another supported place to run Apple TV. Verify support for the exact Roku model before buying. An external device does not correct an Apple account problem, a subscription or title-availability issue, an internet outage, or a problem affecting Apple’s service, so treat it as a platform alternative rather than a guaranteed repair. Roku’s compatibility information is available in its Apple TV channel guide, while its error steps are in its sign-in and playback troubleshooting article.

If other Roku channels also fail, troubleshoot the Roku connection before changing Apple TV credentials. If only Apple TV fails while other channels play, note the exact error and model for Apple or Roku support. Roku menu names and supported features can vary by device generation.

7. Use the symptom to choose the next step

One title will not play

Try another movie or show in Apple TV. If other titles start normally, the failure is narrower than a general app or network outage. Check whether the title is available to your account and region, then retry after the app and TV have been restarted. Avoid resetting the entire TV for a problem isolated to one title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple TV can contain Apple TV+ programming alongside third-party subscriptions and titles offered for rental or purchase. A subscription does not automatically include those other services or transactions, so confirm what type of title you selected before treating a rights or availability message as a technical failure.

Every Apple TV title buffers or stops

Run Video Troubleshooting if the menu exists, check the TV’s network status, pause competing internet use, and restart the device. If other streaming apps also fail, work with the TV manufacturer or your internet provider’s normal connection troubleshooting. If other apps work but Apple TV alone continues to fail, the problem is more likely app-specific and should be escalated to Apple.

Video plays at low quality

Check for other users or devices consuming the connection, then run the in-app connection check and restart the TV. Samsung’s reference figures are 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K in its own troubleshooting guidance; they should not be treated as a universal pass/fail test. A speed-test result by itself cannot guarantee stable playback because congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, service interruptions, and device support also matter.

The Apple TV app freezes or will not open

Restart the TV or streaming device, install available app and firmware updates, and try opening another app. If the TV itself is unresponsive or several apps are affected, use the manufacturer’s support path. A Smart Hub reset is specific to certain Samsung models and signs you out, so do not use it as a first step or transfer it to another platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sign-in fails

First verify that the device has a working internet connection and that other apps can connect. Roku identifies poor connectivity as one possible cause of Apple TV sign-in errors. Restart the device and retry. If playback in other apps is normal but Apple TV sign-in still fails, contact Apple Support rather than repeatedly resetting the TV.

The TV says to check your internet connection

Check network status on the TV or streaming device, test another streaming app, pause competing use, and restart the device. If multiple apps show the same message, investigate the TV’s connection or internet service. If only Apple TV reports it, use Apple’s in-app test where available and then pursue Apple’s app-specific support route.

Playback stops after a few minutes

Repeat the test with another title and with competing internet activity paused. An intermittent failure can reflect congestion even when the TV initially connects successfully. Run Video Troubleshooting if present, restart the device, and update both app and firmware. If other apps remain stable while Apple TV repeatedly stops, document the title, time, device model, and exact message for Apple Support.

Apple’s general guidance for videos that will not stream is available at If you can’t watch or stream movies, TV shows or sports in the Apple TV app. Samsung’s model-specific instructions are at Apple TV app is not working on my Samsung TV or projector. Use the support page matching the device that actually runs the app; a television manufacturer cannot correct an Apple account or service-side problem, and Apple cannot provide model-specific TV menus for every brand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before contacting support, capture the exact wording of any error, identify whether the app is built into the TV or running on a separate device, and record the results of the two comparison tests. This gives the support representative a reproducible scope instead of a general “not working” report.

What not to do first

  • Do not factory-reset the TV because one title fails.
  • Do not assume a speed test proves that playback must work; it measures one moment and does not establish app, Wi-Fi, service, or device compatibility.
  • Do not copy Samsung Smart Hub steps to another TV brand.
  • Do not buy a replacement TV, router, or streaming device until comparisons show the current platform is the limiting factor.
  • Do not assume every Roku device supports Apple TV; verify the exact model.
  • Do not repeatedly sign out or delete the app before confirming that other apps and titles work; those steps can create avoidable credential and setup work.
  • Do not treat a missing Video Troubleshooting menu as proof that the TV is defective; Apple says availability varies by device and region.

How Apple TV+ fits into the app

Apple TV is an app that can contain Apple TV+ programming as well as other content. An Apple TV subscription does not include third-party-branded subscription services or content offered for rental or purchase in the app. Therefore, a title-specific failure may reflect account or content rights rather than a broken television. Treat subscription, rental, and purchase availability as separate from the network and device checks above.

This distinction matters when one title displays a purchase, rental, or subscription prompt while Apple TV+ titles play normally. Confirm the account used on the television and the title’s availability in your region before changing network settings. If the account and title appear correct but the app still refuses to play, use Apple’s app-specific support route.

A compact recovery checklist

  1. Play a different Apple TV title.
  2. Play something in another streaming app.
  3. Open Apple TV > sidebar > Settings > Video Troubleshooting > Start if that option exists.
  4. Check the TV or streaming device’s internet status.
  5. Pause other heavy internet activity.
  6. Restart the TV or streaming device.
  7. Install available Apple TV app and TV firmware updates.
  8. Use manufacturer-specific guidance for persistent TV or network failures.
  9. Contact Apple when other apps work but Apple TV still fails; contact the TV maker or internet provider when several apps fail.

This order keeps reversible checks ahead of sign-outs and resets while preserving the comparison needed to identify whether the fault belongs to a title, Apple TV, the device, or the connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Apple TV+ buffer while other apps work?

When other apps play normally, the fault is more likely limited to the Apple TV app, its account, or a title than to the TV’s general internet connection. Try another Apple TV title, run Video Troubleshooting if available, restart the device, and update the app and TV firmware. If Apple TV alone still fails, contact Apple Support.

What internet speed does Apple TV+ require?

Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance lists 5 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K. Those are Samsung reference figures, not a universal Apple requirement or a guarantee of uninterrupted playback. Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, device support, and service availability also affect streaming.

How do I find Apple TV Video Troubleshooting on a smart TV?

Open Apple TV, open the sidebar, choose Settings, select Video Troubleshooting, then choose Start. Apple says the feature is not available on every device, country, or region. If the option is missing, check network status, pause competing use, and restart the device.

Will resetting Samsung Smart Hub fix Apple TV?

It can help with persistent app problems on some Samsung models, but it signs you out of apps and requires the TV PIN. Use it only after title and app comparisons, connection checks, restart, updates, and Samsung’s instructions for the exact model. It is not a procedure for other TV brands.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Roku device support the Apple TV app?

No. Roku states that Apple TV is available only on compatible Roku streaming devices. Verify the exact model before purchasing or assuming that a Roku menu should include the app. A compatible Roku also cannot fix an account, subscription, title, network, or Apple service problem.

Should I factory-reset my smart TV when Apple TV+ will not play?

No. A factory reset is not an appropriate first response to one failing title or an app-specific error. Compare another title and another app, run the available connection check, pause competing internet use, restart, and update first. Reset only when the manufacturer specifically directs it for a persistent device problem.

The Bottom Line

Start with scope, not a reset: test another Apple TV title and another streaming app. Then run Apple’s Video Troubleshooting flow when available, check the connection, pause competing use, restart, and update the app and TV software. Keep Samsung Smart Hub and Roku instructions limited to the exact supported platform. Escalate Apple-only failures to Apple, and broader app or network failures to the TV maker or internet provider.
