The Apple TV app for Windows 11 can fail in several different ways: it may not open, close immediately, show a black screen, refuse to play a title, or remain stuck on a loading message. The quickest fix depends on which part is failing.

Start with the Microsoft Store update and Windows app repair steps below. If the app opens but playback fails, focus on your connection, account, date and time, display drivers, and DRM-related issues rather than reinstalling Windows.

1. Check whether the problem affects the app or playback

Try opening the Apple TV app and note what happens:

What you see Likely area to check
The app does not open or closes immediately App installation, cached data, Windows services, or Store updates
The app opens but shows a blank or black window App cache, graphics driver, hardware acceleration, or a temporary service problem
You can browse but a video will not start Internet connection, account authorization, region, DRM, or an outdated app
Video starts but stutters Network speed, Wi-Fi congestion, background downloads, or graphics drivers
Only one movie or episode fails A title-specific availability, account, or service problem

Before changing settings, check whether the same title plays at tv.apple.com in a current browser. If the website also fails, the issue is probably not limited to the Windows app.

2. Update Apple TV from the Microsoft Store

The Apple TV app is distributed through the Microsoft Store. An older build can cause sign-in and playback problems after an update to Windows or the Apple TV service.

  1. Close Apple TV.
  2. Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
  3. Select Library in the lower-left corner.
  4. Click Get updates.
  5. Install the update for Apple TV, if one is offered.
  6. Restart Windows and test the app again.

If the Store itself is stuck, press Windows + R, enter wsreset.exe, and press Enter. A blank Command Prompt window may appear briefly; the Microsoft Store should open afterward. Run Library > Get updates again.

3. Repair or reset the Apple TV app

Windows 11 can repair a Store app without removing its local data. If repair does not help, reset the app. Resetting removes the app’s local cache and settings; it does not cancel an Apple subscription or delete your Apple account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click Start and choose Installed apps.
  2. Search for Apple TV.
  3. Click the app’s three-dot menu and select Advanced options.
  4. Click Repair.
  5. Open Apple TV and test playback.
  6. If the problem remains, return to the same screen and click Reset.

The names or location of these controls can vary slightly between Windows 11 builds. If Advanced options is not shown from Installed apps, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and use the Apple TV three-dot menu there.

4. End a frozen Apple TV process

Closing the window does not always stop a Store app completely. End the process before trying to launch it again.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. On the Processes tab, select Apple TV, if listed.
  3. Click End task.
  4. Also end a Microsoft Store process only if the Store itself is frozen and you have no downloads in progress.
  5. Open Apple TV again from Start.

Do not repeatedly end unrelated Windows processes. If Apple TV is not listed, it has already stopped and you can continue with repair or reset.

5. Check your Apple account and subscription

If the app opens but displays a sign-in loop, an authorization error, or a message saying that a title cannot be played, sign out and sign in again.

  1. Open Apple TV.
  2. Open the account or profile menu.
  3. Choose Sign Out.
  4. Close the app, reopen it, and sign in with the Apple Account that owns the subscription or rental.

Make sure the subscription is active and that the title is available in your region. A rental or purchase may belong to a different Apple Account than the one currently signed in. If you use two-factor authentication, complete the verification prompt rather than repeatedly entering the password.

6. Fix a black screen, stuttering, or video that will not start

Test the network

Open another streaming service or visit a few websites. Restart the router if other services are also slow. Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization, VPN connections, and game updates while testing Apple TV.

If Apple TV works on a phone hotspot but not on your normal connection, the likely causes are the router, DNS filtering, a VPN, or a network security product. Temporarily disconnect the VPN and test again. Avoid changing DNS permanently until you have identified that it is the cause.

Update the graphics driver

  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters.
  3. Right-click your Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA adapter.
  4. Select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  5. Restart Windows.

For a gaming PC or a laptop with switchable graphics, also install the current driver from the computer manufacturer’s support page. A driver supplied by Windows may not be the newest driver for protected video playback.

Check the display setup

Temporarily disconnect a second monitor, USB-C dock, capture device, or HDMI splitter and test on the computer’s built-in or primary display. Protected video can fail when an external display or adapter does not support the required HDCP path. This can produce a black video area even though menus load normally.

7. Install pending Windows updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Click Check for updates.
  3. Install available updates and restart the PC.
  4. Return to Windows Update and open Advanced options > Optional updates.
  5. Install a relevant display or chipset driver if Windows offers one.

Do not interrupt a restart while Windows is applying an update. Test Apple TV after the restart rather than immediately after the download finishes.

8. Check Windows date, time, and region

Incorrect system time can interfere with secure sign-in and protected video licenses.

  1. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
  2. Turn on Set time automatically.
  3. Click Sync now if the option is available.
  4. Open Time & language > Language & region and confirm the region is correct.
  5. Restart Apple TV.

Do not change the region merely to access a title that is unavailable in your country. Availability is controlled by Apple and the content provider.

9. Reinstall Apple TV

Reinstalling is useful when repair and reset have not fixed a damaged installation.

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find Apple TV, open its three-dot menu, and select Uninstall.
  3. Restart Windows.
  4. Open Microsoft Store.
  5. Search for Apple TV and install the official app published by Apple.
  6. Launch it and sign in again.

Removing the Windows app does not remove purchases or subscriptions from your Apple Account. You may need to download or configure local settings again after reinstalling.

10. When the problem is probably not fixable in the app

Check Apple’s system status page if browsing, sign-in, purchases, or playback fails across multiple devices. Also try the same title in a browser and on another device using the same account.

Contact Apple Support if:

  • the account works elsewhere but Apple TV repeatedly reports an authorization error;
  • purchases are missing from the library;
  • every title fails after reinstalling and updating Windows;
  • Apple TV shows a specific error code that is not documented in the app;
  • playback fails only with a particular account or subscription.

When contacting support, record the Windows 11 version, Apple TV app version, exact error message, whether the website works, and whether the failure occurs on one or multiple displays. That information is more useful than simply reporting that the app “doesn’t work.”

FAQ

Does Apple TV require iTunes on Windows 11?

No. Apple TV is a separate Microsoft Store app. iTunes is not required just to install or use Apple TV.

Why does Apple TV open but show a black screen?

Common causes include a graphics-driver problem, an external display or dock that fails HDCP, corrupted app data, or a temporary playback service issue. Repair the app, update the display driver, and test with external displays disconnected.

Will resetting Apple TV delete my purchases?

No. Resetting the Windows app removes its local cache and settings. Purchases and subscriptions remain associated with your Apple Account, although you may need to sign in again.

Why can I watch Apple TV in a browser but not in the Windows app?

That points to a local app, graphics, display, or Windows issue. Update the Store app, use Windows’ Repair and Reset controls, update the graphics driver, and test without a dock or second monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Apple TV keep asking me to sign in?

Check the Windows date and time, disable a VPN temporarily, update the app, then sign out and sign in again. If the same account works on other devices but not after reinstalling the app, contact Apple Support.

The Bottom Line

For most Windows 11 Apple TV problems, use this order: update the app from Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, repair it under Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Apple TV > Advanced options, then reset or reinstall it. For playback-only failures, test the account and website, update the graphics driver, and remove external displays or VPNs from the test. If the same account and title fail everywhere, investigate Apple’s service or account rather than Windows.
