First determine whether the problem affects all Apple TV audio or only Apple Music. If every app is silent, troubleshoot the HDMI and TV/receiver signal path; if Apple Music alone sounds different, check its Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, or lossless settings. The right fix depends on the symptom, and changing audio formats is a diagnostic step—not a universal remedy.

Start by identifying what is wrong

Before changing settings, play audio in another Apple TV app and listen for navigation sounds. Note whether you have total silence, intermittent sound, or a difference in volume or format. This separates a device-wide audio problem from an Apple Music-specific one and helps avoid changing settings that cannot address the symptom.

  • Other apps and navigation sounds are also silent: Work through the Apple TV, HDMI, television, and receiver checks below.
  • Other apps work, but Apple Music is silent or sounds different: Check the relevant Music setting, such as Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, or lossless, and verify that the track and audio path support the format.
  • Only navigation sounds are missing: Enable Sound Effects and Music in Settings > Video and Audio.

Apple’s general no-sound troubleshooting steps diagnose the Apple TV and connected audio chain; they do not establish that a silence problem isolated to Apple Music has the same cause. Likewise, lossless and Atmos settings are quality and format controls, not general fixes for every sound fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep three comparisons in mind while troubleshooting: whether the issue affects every app or just Apple Music; whether Apple TV is connected directly to the TV or through a receiver or HDMI switch; and whether the symptom is silence, an intermittent signal, or a difference in level or format. Change one thing at a time and retest. If several settings are changed together, it becomes harder to tell which test affected playback.

If Apple TV has no sound in any app

Test after each step. If sound returns, stop there rather than changing more settings. Start with the physical connection because a loose cable or a receiver in the signal path can affect all Apple TV audio.

1. Reseat the HDMI cable and test another cable

  1. Turn off the connected equipment if needed, then unplug the HDMI cable at both ends.
  2. Reconnect it firmly to Apple TV and the TV, receiver, or sound bar.
  3. If audio is still missing, try another HDMI cable. Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.0.

A replacement cable is a useful test for a connection problem; it will not correct a Music setting or guarantee a fix for every audio issue. Keep the cable type matched to the HDMI version in the setup.

During this test, check both ends of the cable rather than only the Apple TV connection: the signal path may include a television, sound bar, receiver, or switch. If another cable makes no difference, move to the next test instead of assuming the cable specification is the cause. The point is to isolate the link, not to buy a new cable as a default fix.

2. Restart Apple TV and the audio equipment

Turn off the TV, unplug Apple TV from power, and then reconnect and restart the devices. If the sound passes through an AV receiver or receiver-equipped speaker system, power cycle that equipment too. Retest audio before moving on.

3. Bypass a receiver or HDMI switch

Temporarily connect Apple TV directly to the television, leaving an HDMI switch or AV receiver out of the chain. If sound works in this arrangement, the bypassed device or its connection is implicated. Consult that device’s manufacturer for setup or compatibility help. Restore the normal connection after the test.

This test isolates where the issue may lie; it does not prove that the bypassed device is defective. A direct connection can also change which audio formats are available, so use it to check basic sound first.

Compare the same playback before and after bypassing the intermediary. If basic sound returns, you have learned that the normal chain is relevant, but not whether the receiver, switch, its settings, or a connection is responsible. If sound remains absent with a direct TV connection, continue checking Apple TV audio settings rather than treating the receiver as the only possible cause.

4. Test a different Apple TV audio format

  1. On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format.
  2. Turn on Change Format and test another available format.
  3. If the option is available, test with Continuous Audio off as well.

Apple TV 4K automatically selects the best format supported by the connected setup. Apple describes Stereo as the choice for stereo systems and Dolby Digital 5.1 as an option when equipment does not support Atmos or multichannel PCM. Changing the format can help diagnose a compatibility issue, but it is not a setting to force on every system.

Think of the format test as a comparison, not a recommendation to leave the device on a particular output. A stereo setup and a multichannel or Atmos-capable setup do not have the same capabilities. If changing format restores sound, note which setting was tested and consider whether the equipment supports the original format before settling on a configuration. If it does not restore sound, return to the remaining checks; the test has not identified a Music-specific cause.

Continuous Audio uses Dolby MAT to handle transitions between audio formats. With an older receiver, an Atmos indicator may appear even when the original audio format is still playing. Treat the receiver’s indicator as one clue, not conclusive proof of the format of the track.

5. Check Audio Mode, Audio Output, and processing

In Settings > Video and Audio, set Audio Mode to 16 bit. If you use the TV speakers, a sound bar, or a receiver for output, set Audio Output to Apple TV. Then test playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If sound remains absent or behaves unexpectedly, temporarily disable volume leveling and other audio-processing controls on the TV or receiver. Those controls can alter output, so testing with them off helps simplify the signal path. Re-enable any setting you want after testing, one at a time.

These controls serve different purposes from the Music app’s Atmos and lossless options. Audio Mode, Audio Output, and TV/receiver processing belong to the system’s output path; Atmos and lossless are Apple Music format or quality choices. If the whole Apple TV is silent, prioritize the system output path. If other apps play correctly and only an Apple Music track differs, focus on the Music controls and track information instead.

6. Restore navigation sounds if only the interface is silent

Open Settings > Video and Audio and turn on Sound Effects and Music. This is the specific Apple TV setting for missing sounds while navigating the interface; it is separate from Apple Music playback controls.

If Apple Music Dolby Atmos is missing

Atmos playback on Apple TV depends on the Apple TV model, software, content version, and the connected audio path. The setup guidance here applies to Apple TV 4K: update it to current tvOS, then check that the audio equipment and connection support Atmos.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the eligible listening setup

Apple identifies these Atmos-capable setups for Apple TV 4K:

  • HomePod speakers set as the default audio output.
  • A Dolby Atmos-compatible sound bar, AV receiver, or television.
  • Apple or Beats Bluetooth headphones.

Having an Atmos-capable component somewhere in the setup does not guarantee Atmos playback. The TV, receiver, and sound bar each matter, as does how Apple TV connects to them.

Check each device in the route rather than judging by one product label. For a receiver-and-sound-bar setup, for example, confirm that the equipment being used is Atmos-compatible and that Apple TV connects to the intended Atmos-capable device. The eligible setup list is not a promise that every combination of TV, receiver, and sound bar will pass Atmos through.

Check the connection route

For Atmos, Apple recommends connecting Apple TV 4K directly to the HDMI input on the Atmos-capable sound bar or AV receiver. Many televisions do not pass Atmos through to a sound bar or receiver, and Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC connections. If Atmos is unavailable, check the capabilities and connection order of the equipment you already have before considering a change to the setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is why a direct-to-TV test for general silence and an Atmos connection check are not interchangeable. Directly connecting to the television can help isolate an intermediary when all sound is missing. For Atmos, however, Apple’s setup guidance calls for Apple TV 4K to connect directly to the Atmos-capable sound bar or receiver. Once basic sound works, use the Atmos-appropriate route and verify the capabilities of the components rather than assuming a TV will relay the format.

Choose the Apple Music Atmos setting

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Music.
  2. Select Dolby Atmos.
  3. Choose Automatic or Off.

Use Automatic when you want Apple Music to play Atmos where the device and audio setup support it. Select Off if you want to disable Atmos playback. If the option or expected playback is missing, first confirm the track’s version and the connection path rather than assuming the setting alone determines availability.

Confirm the track is offered in Atmos

Look for the Dolby Atmos badge in the playback controls or album information. Some songs are available in Atmos only on a particular version of an album, so check the version you are playing. A song without the badge should not be expected to play as an Atmos mix just because the connected equipment supports the format.

Separate a missing Atmos mix from a playback fault: a compatible system cannot make an unbadged version an Atmos track. Check the badge on the actual version playing before changing equipment or repeatedly switching settings. If one album version has the badge and another does not, the difference may be the version offered rather than a failure of the Apple TV audio path.

If Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo tracks

Apple’s recommendation for this volume difference is to turn on Sound Check. On Apple TV, open Settings > Apps > Music > Sound Check and enable it. Sound Check is the targeted setting for differing loudness between Atmos and stereo tracks; changing HDMI cables or switching to lossless does not address that specific setting.

If this is the only symptom and other playback is normal, begin with Sound Check rather than the no-sound sequence. If the track is also missing its expected Atmos presentation, separately check the Atmos badge, Music’s Dolby Atmos selection, and the hardware route. Loudness difference and Atmos availability are related to Music playback but are distinct questions: Sound Check addresses the former, while content and compatible equipment determine the latter.

If you are troubleshooting lossless audio quality

Lossless has narrower requirements than ordinary playback. Apple says Apple TV 4K needs current tvOS and an HDMI connection to an AV receiver for lossless audio. To enable it, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality and select Lossless.

Apple TV 4K does not support Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz. That limit is specific to Hi-Res Lossless on Apple TV 4K; selecting Lossless does not make higher sample rates available. These quality settings are not a general remedy for silence, dropouts, or a loudness difference between Atmos and stereo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before changing this setting, establish that lossless quality is actually the concern. A missing signal calls for the HDMI and system-audio checks; a quieter Atmos mix calls for Sound Check; and unavailable Atmos calls for a content and compatible-path check. Lossless has its own stated Apple TV 4K requirements and sample-rate ceiling, so it should not be used as a catch-all troubleshooting switch.

Use the symptom to choose the next test

What you notice Best next check What the result tells you

Only navigation sounds are silent Turn on Sound Effects and Music in Settings > Video and Audio. Whether the interface sound setting was disabled.

Lossless is the specific concern Check current tvOS, HDMI to an AV receiver, and the Audio Quality setting. Whether the setup matches Apple’s stated lossless requirements and sample-rate ceiling.

Use the comparison table as a starting point, not as a reason to run every test for every symptom. A device-wide silence problem needs the physical path and Apple TV output checks. A Music-only difference calls for the matching Music control and content check. For Atmos, compare the track version and the full connection route; for lossless, compare the setup with Apple’s specific Apple TV 4K requirements.

When the checks do not resolve it

If other apps play normally and the problem remains limited to Apple Music after checking the relevant setting and connection path, the symptoms alone do not establish an account entitlement issue, service outage, or app bug. Contact Apple Support for diagnosis tied to your Apple TV and account rather than guessing at a cause. Include the Apple TV model, tvOS version, whether other apps have sound, the audio devices and HDMI route, and the exact Apple Music symptom; those details distinguish device-wide silence from a format or track-specific issue.

It is also useful to report which tests changed nothing and whether bypassing a receiver or switch changed the result. For a format concern, note whether the track shows an Atmos badge and which version of the album is playing. For a loudness difference, say whether Sound Check is enabled; for lossless, include the HDMI connection to the AV receiver and the quality setting. This gives support a clear account of the symptom and the checks already completed without presuming a cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if Dolby Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo tracks?

Turn on Sound Check on Apple TV under Settings > Apps > Music > Sound Check. This is Apple’s targeted recommendation for the Atmos-versus-stereo loudness difference; changing the HDMI cable or enabling lossless is not the specific fix.

Why is Apple Music silent when other Apple TV apps have sound?

A Music-only symptom does not by itself show that the HDMI chain or Apple TV has a system-wide audio fault. Check the relevant Music controls, including Dolby Atmos, Sound Check, or lossless, according to the symptom, and verify the track version and format. If it persists, contact Apple Support for device- and account-specific diagnosis.

How can I tell whether a song is playing in Dolby Atmos?

Look for the Dolby Atmos badge in the playback controls or album information. Some songs are available in Atmos only on a particular album version, so check the version currently playing as well as the Dolby Atmos setting and audio path.

Should Apple TV connect to my TV or receiver for Atmos?

For Apple TV 4K Atmos, Apple recommends connecting directly to the HDMI input on an Atmos-capable sound bar or AV receiver. Many TVs do not pass Atmos through, and Apple’s high-bandwidth Atmos does not work over ARC connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which HDMI cable should I try for no sound?

Reseat both ends and test another cable. Apple specifies Ultra High Speed HDMI for HDMI 2.1 and Premium High Speed HDMI for HDMI 2.0. A cable swap tests the connection; it does not fix Music settings or guarantee a remedy for every audio problem.

Does Apple TV 4K support Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz?

No. Apple TV 4K does not support Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz. Apple’s lossless setup requirement is current tvOS and an HDMI connection to an AV receiver; the Lossless control is under Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality.

The Bottom Line

Match the fix to the symptom: use HDMI and system-output checks for silence across Apple TV, Sound Effects and Music for missing navigation sounds, Sound Check for quieter Atmos tracks, and the Atmos or lossless checks only when those formats are the concern. For Apple TV 4K, Atmos and lossless both depend on compatible setup details, while Hi-Res Lossless is limited to 48 kHz.
