If an accessory in Apple’s Home app shows “No Response,” first check whether the problem affects devices from one manufacturer or several. That distinction points to different troubleshooting steps. Check the accessory and its maker’s app before removing or resetting it, and treat HomePod problems separately from third-party accessory problems.

First, identify what is affected

Count the manufacturers represented by the accessories that show “No Response.” Apple’s guidance uses this split because a problem limited to one maker may be specific to its devices, bridge, or app, while failures across several makers can point to a shared network or home-hub issue. After each step below, check whether the accessory responds in Home before moving on.

  • One manufacturer: Follow the device-focused checks first.
  • Several manufacturers: Follow the shared-device and network checks.
  • HomePod or HomePod mini: Use the separate HomePod steps below.

If accessories from one manufacturer show “No Response”

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the device you are using to check Home. This may be an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
  2. Restart the affected accessory. If it uses batteries, remove and reinstall them as part of the restart check.
  3. Check the manufacturer’s app. See whether the accessory responds there and whether the app offers a firmware update. If it also fails in the maker’s app, ask the manufacturer about resetting it rather than assuming Home is the cause.
  4. Restart relevant bridges and home hubs. Unplug and reconnect power to third-party bridges and any home hubs in the home, such as HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV.
  5. If it is a third-party Thread accessory, restart it using Apple’s specified timing. Disconnect it from power for 5 minutes, reconnect it, and then allow 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilise.
  6. Remove and re-add the accessory only after the earlier checks fail. Remove it from Home, or from the manufacturer’s app if Home does not offer removal. Reset it according to the maker’s instructions, then add it again. Contact the manufacturer if it remains unresponsive.

If accessories from several manufacturers show “No Response”

  1. Update the device you use to control Home, then reopen Home. Install the latest available software on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, and close and reopen the Home app.
  2. Check the local Wi-Fi connection. Connect that iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the same Wi-Fi network as the accessories, then check Home again. Remote accessory control has an additional home-hub requirement; see the note below.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth and check the accessories. Restart affected devices and check their respective manufacturer apps for firmware updates.
  4. Apply the Thread restart only to third-party Thread accessories. Disconnect power for 5 minutes, reconnect, and wait 10 minutes for the Thread network to stabilise.
  5. Restart the shared equipment and controlling device. If the accessories still do not respond, restart the modem and router, third-party bridges, home hubs, affected accessories, and the iPhone, iPad, or Mac used to control Home.
  6. Check for network interference from VPN or security software. Apple advises checking whether a VPN or third-party security software is causing network connectivity problems. If the problem continues across manufacturers, contact Apple Support.

What the home-hub requirement does—and does not—mean

Apple says a home hub must be set up for remote control of accessories. Apple lists HomePod, HomePod mini, and Apple TV as home hubs. This requirement concerns controlling accessories remotely; it does not establish that adding a hub will fix an accessory that fails while you are troubleshooting its local connection.

If HomePod or HomePod mini itself shows “No Response”

  1. Inspect HomePod’s alerts in Home. Look for details about Wi-Fi, the Apple Account, or another reported issue.
  2. Check its Wi-Fi signal indicator in HomePod settings. Apple describes two bars or fewer as a weak signal. Try moving HomePod closer to the router and reducing possible wireless interference.
  3. Restart HomePod. Use the restart control in Home settings. If that control is unavailable, unplug HomePod and reconnect its power.
  4. Use reset only if it still does not respond. Apple identifies resetting as a later step after these checks, not the first thing to try.

If HomePod reports “Network Issue” or “No Internet,” Apple’s separate guidance also recommends restarting HomePod and the modem/router and checking that HomePod and the iPhone are on the same preferred Wi-Fi network. These alerts can affect Home accessory control as well as HomePod’s network features.

If you cannot add or re-add an accessory

An accessory that cannot be added is a setup problem, not automatically the same fault as an already-added accessory showing “No Response.” For setup or re-addition, Apple’s guidance says some accessories are incompatible with 5 GHz Wi-Fi and need a 2.4 GHz network. It also recommends powering the accessory, bringing it nearer the router during setup, checking for firmware updates, and following the manufacturer’s reset instructions. Do not treat 2.4 GHz incompatibility as the explanation for every existing “No Response” status.

Who to contact if the checks do not work

  • One maker’s accessories remain unresponsive: Contact that accessory’s manufacturer, particularly if it also fails in the maker’s app or needs a manufacturer-directed reset.
  • Accessories from several manufacturers still fail: Contact Apple Support after checking shared network conditions and restarting the relevant equipment.

These steps follow Apple Support’s guidance in “If your HomeKit or Matter accessory isn’t responding in the Home app,” “If HomePod or HomePod mini isn’t responding,” “If HomePod has a ‘Network Issue’ or ‘No Internet’,” and “If you can’t add a smart home accessory to the Home app.”
