If your Xbox racing wheel won’t connect or respond, start with its power and cables, plug it directly into another Xbox USB port without a hub, and test a second game that supports your exact wheel. If it works elsewhere, focus on the game’s compatibility and control settings. If the problem began after resuming a game on Xbox Series X|S, Thrustmaster recommends disabling Quick Resume for its wheels. Avoid resets, firmware tools, or replacement parts until you have identified the wheel’s exact model.
Start with the symptom: where and when does the wheel fail?
Notice whether the wheel is missing from the Xbox home screen, fails in every game, or works in some games but not one. Also note whether the problem happens immediately, only after resuming a game, or only in a streamed session. These clues help distinguish a connection or wheel issue from a game-specific or session-related problem.
- It does not respond anywhere: check power, cabling, and direct USB connection first.
- It works in the Xbox menu or another game: check the affected game’s wheel compatibility and control settings.
- It fails after resuming a game: if you have a Thrustmaster wheel on Xbox Series X|S, try the company’s Quick Resume guidance below.
- It fails only in a streamed session: Thrustmaster says its wheels are not detected in cloud or streaming play when the game is not installed on the console.
Check the wheel’s power and USB connection
Identify the model before disconnecting, resetting, updating, or replacing anything. Wheels differ in their power requirements, controls, firmware utilities, and recovery procedures. For a powered wheel, make sure its power lead is firmly seated and try the power supply directly from a wall outlet.

- Disconnect the wheel from the Xbox, then connect it directly to a different console USB port. Do not use a USB hub; Logitech recommends avoiding hubs when troubleshooting its G920, and Thrustmaster likewise advises a direct connection without hubs or extension cables for the TMX.
- Reconnect the wheel and allow it to complete any startup or calibration movement. Check whether its controls respond in the Xbox menu.
Do not substitute a generic power adapter or cable: any replacement must match the exact wheel model. Logitech’s G920 checklist also includes trying another USB port and checking for cable damage. See Logitech’s G920 troubleshooting guidance.

Find out whether the problem is limited to one game
Test another game that supports your exact wheel. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list and the game’s own controller or wheel settings; compatibility is model- and title-specific, and some games require manual assignment of axes or buttons. In some titles, the console’s official controller may also need to be active.
If the wheel works in the Xbox menu or another supported game but not in one title, focus on that game’s compatibility, updates, bindings, and control settings before treating the wheel as faulty. Logitech includes system and game updates and console or in-game settings in its G920 troubleshooting checks. For a Thrustmaster wheel, consult its game compatibility and Xbox guidance.

Cloud or streaming play
Thrustmaster says its racing wheels are not detected in cloud gaming or streaming sessions when the game is not installed on the console. Its guidance is specific to Thrustmaster: verify the support terms for another brand rather than assuming the same limitation. If you are playing a Thrustmaster-supported title remotely, install and launch the game on the Xbox to test the wheel locally.

If a Thrustmaster wheel worked initially and started having performance problems after a game was resumed, turn off Quick Resume for that test and relaunch the game. Thrustmaster says the feature on Xbox Series X and Series S supports standard gamepads only; this is a targeted check for that symptom, not a general first step for every wheel. Use only the instructions for your exact wheel model
Check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model before installing firmware or attempting a reset. Firmware tools and recovery procedures are not universal. Do not disconnect the wheel during a firmware update.
Thrustmaster TMX: bootloader recovery
Thrustmaster publishes a model-specific bootloader procedure for the TMX if it does not start. Treat it as a later recovery step—not as a generic Xbox steering-wheel reset—and follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact model: Thrustmaster support.

HORI OVERDRIVE: firmware, settings, and mode
HORI’s OVERDRIVE guidance calls for checking console system software, updating firmware through HORI Device Manager on Windows, resetting wheel settings through that manager, restarting the console, reconnecting at the main screen, and confirming the wheel’s mode switch is in the correct position. HORI warns not to disconnect the wheel during a firmware update. Use the current HORI support information for the OVERDRIVE rather than applying these steps to another wheel.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Work out whether the fault follows the wheel
If the basic checks and the correct model-specific instructions do not help, test the wheel in another supported game or on another compatible console or computer if you can. Cross-testing can help distinguish a wheel fault from a problem with one console port or game. Logitech recommends trying other games or devices as part of its G920 troubleshooting.
- If the wheel fails across compatible games and devices, contact the wheel manufacturer and check the warranty for that exact model.
- If the wheel works on another device, revisit the Xbox port, game compatibility, game settings, and session type.
- If the problem is limited to one title, check that title’s current wheel support and button or axis bindings before considering hardware replacement.
The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one repair, part, or replacement adapter that applies to an unspecified Xbox racing wheel.
