If your iPhone will not connect to a Bluetooth accessory, start by checking the accessory’s power, distance, and discovery mode. Then forget and re-pair it, check the companion app’s Bluetooth permission, restart and update the iPhone, and—if several accessories fail—consider Reset All Settings. Do not erase the iPhone unless Apple Support specifically directs you to do so.

The right fix depends on what you see: an accessory that does not appear needs different troubleshooting from one that appears but refuses to connect.

First, identify the Bluetooth problem

What happens Start here
The accessory does not appear in the Bluetooth list Check power, distance, discovery mode, Bluetooth in Settings, and compatibility.
The accessory appears but will not connect Forget the device, remove other nearby connections, restart the accessory, and pair again.
The accessory connects, but its app cannot find it Check that the companion app has Bluetooth permission.
Several Bluetooth accessories fail Restart and update the iPhone. If the problem continues, consider Reset All Settings.
Bluetooth is grayed out or cannot be enabled Contact Apple Support, particularly if the accessory manufacturer confirms that the accessory works.

For the pairing steps below, use Settings > Bluetooth. Tapping Bluetooth in Control Center is not the same thing as fully turning Bluetooth off: Control Center generally disconnects accessories, while Settings is where you manage Bluetooth and pair devices.

1. Check range, power, Bluetooth, and discovery mode

Keep the iPhone and accessory close together while pairing. Bluetooth pairing generally works within about 33 feet (10 meters), although walls, furniture, interference, and the design of the accessory can reduce the practical range.

  • Plug & Play with Free Driver Support - Plug and play for Windows 8.1/10/11 (internet required). Supports Win7 (driver required and can be downloaded from website for free). Download the latest driver from TP-Link website to utilize Bluetooth 5.4
  1. Charge or power on the accessory. Connect it to power, charge its internal battery, or replace its batteries if the device uses replaceable ones. A low battery can prevent an accessory from entering discovery mode.
  2. Restart the accessory. Turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
  3. Put it into discovery or pairing mode. Follow the accessory’s manual. Simply turning on headphones, a speaker, a keyboard, or a car system does not always make it discoverable.
  4. Open the correct iPhone screen. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  5. Tap the accessory’s name when it appears under the available devices.

If the accessory never appears, do not repeatedly tap its old name or assume the iPhone is defective. Confirm that it is actually in pairing mode and is not already connected to another nearby phone, tablet, computer, or vehicle.

Optional interference check

If the device appears but the connection is unstable, move the iPhone and accessory away from other wireless equipment and try again with the devices repositioned. Airplane Mode can sometimes help isolate wireless interference, but it is not a guaranteed Bluetooth repair. Turn it off again before normal use if you need cellular or Wi-Fi connections.

2. Forget the accessory and pair it again

This is the most useful next step when the accessory appears in the Bluetooth list but will not connect, repeatedly disconnects, or became unreliable after previously working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth.
  2. Find the accessory under My Devices.
  3. Tap the information button beside its name.
  4. Tap Forget This Device, then confirm.
  5. Put the accessory back into discovery or pairing mode using its manufacturer’s instructions.
  6. Return to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the accessory when it appears.

If the accessory is paired with another phone, tablet, computer, or car, disconnect or unpair it there first. Many accessories automatically reconnect to the last device they used, which can make the iPhone appear unable to connect even though the accessory is functioning normally.

AirPods require model-specific reset instructions

For AirPods, forgetting the device and resetting the AirPods are separate actions. The reset procedure differs by AirPods model and case design, so do not apply one universal button-press sequence to every pair. First forget the AirPods on the iPhone, then use the reset instructions for your specific model from Apple or the AirPods documentation.

  • Up to 5 Devices Sync Connected: UGREEN Bluetooth dongle for PC supports up to 5 different types of Bluetooth devices to be connected at the same time without interfering with each other, such as Bluetooth mouse/keyboard/mobile phone/headphones, etc. If Bluetooth audio devices of the same type (such as speakers/headphones) are connected, only one device can play music.
  • Plug and Play: The Bluetooth adapter is developed for Windows systems only and does not support other systems. No driver installation is required under Windows 11/10/8.1. NOTE: Win 7, Linux and MacOS System are NOT supported.
  • Mini Size: An extremely compact Bluetooth stick that you can leave on your laptop or PC without removing it.The compact size does not interfere with other USB ports. Convenient to carry, no space occupation.
  • What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)

3. Check the companion app’s Bluetooth permission

This step applies mainly when a dedicated app is responsible for discovering or configuring the accessory. Examples include fitness trackers, medical devices, smart-home products, and specialty equipment. It is not a universal fix for ordinary Bluetooth headphones or speakers that fail to pair directly in Settings.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Bluetooth.
  4. Find the accessory’s companion app and turn on its Bluetooth permission.

Close and reopen the app after granting permission, then follow its in-app setup process. If the accessory should pair directly with the iPhone, try pairing it in Settings > Bluetooth first rather than relying only on the app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some ordinary Bluetooth audio functions do not depend on an app permission. Therefore, a missing app permission is more likely to explain “the app cannot find my device” than “my headphones never appear in Bluetooth.”

4. Restart and update the iPhone, then check compatibility

A restart can clear a temporary Bluetooth or audio-service fault. Restart the iPhone normally, then try the pairing process again after the phone turns back on.

Next, check for an iOS update:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. Install the update offered for your iPhone, if one is available.

Use the version offered on your particular iPhone rather than relying on a version number mentioned in an older troubleshooting guide. Apple’s current major iOS generation can change, and device eligibility varies by model.

Check compatibility before blaming Bluetooth

If the accessory works with another device but not with the iPhone, check the accessory manufacturer’s compatibility information for your iPhone model and iOS version. Compatibility can depend on required apps, supported Bluetooth profiles, firmware, regional restrictions, or minimum operating-system versions.

  • SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Not compatible with all other operation systems e.g. Mac, Linux, Chrome, Unix, Playstation(PS), Windows 7 and below; Disable any built-in Bluetooth of the device before use this product, refer to the user manual for detail

A successful connection to another phone does not prove that every feature is supported on every iPhone. Conversely, if the accessory fails with several unrelated devices, the accessory itself may need service or replacement.

5. Reset all settings if multiple accessories still fail

Use this as a stronger final software step—not as the first response to one troublesome accessory—when restarting and updating have not helped and multiple Bluetooth devices are affected.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Tap Reset All Settings.
  6. Authenticate if prompted and confirm.

According to Apple’s description, Reset All Settings does not delete your photos, messages, apps, documents, or other personal data. However, it does restore many system and preference settings. Expect to lose or reconfigure items such as:

  • Bluetooth pairings
  • Saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords
  • VPN and some network configurations
  • Privacy permissions
  • Apple Pay cards
  • Some display, keyboard, location, and other device preferences

After the reset, reconnect each Bluetooth accessory from Settings > Bluetooth. Have important Wi-Fi passwords and any VPN information available before starting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse Reset All Settings with a factory erase

Erase All Content and Settings is a factory-reset procedure. It removes personal content and returns the iPhone to its setup state. It is materially more destructive than Reset All Settings and is not an appropriate ordinary Bluetooth troubleshooting step.

What about Reset Network Settings?

Reset Network Settings is not the standard fix for an isolated Bluetooth pairing problem. It is aimed primarily at network-connection issues and removes Wi-Fi networks and passwords along with mobile, VPN, and APN-related settings. Use it only when you have a broader network problem or Apple Support specifically recommends it.

For a Bluetooth-only fault, start with Forget This Device. If several accessories fail, Reset All Settings is the more directly relevant broader settings reset.

When the problem is probably the accessory

Consider the accessory as the likely source when it will not power on, cannot enter discovery mode, fails with several devices, has visible damage, or disconnects even when used close to another compatible device. For a battery-powered accessory, using the correct replacement batteries may be reasonable if the existing batteries are depleted—but do not buy batteries for a device with a sealed rechargeable battery, and verify the required type and size first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Likewise, replacing Bluetooth headphones should be a last resort after charging, pairing, compatibility, and cross-device checks. Buying a new accessory will not fix an iPhone whose Bluetooth is grayed out or whose connection fails with every accessory.

When to contact Apple or the accessory manufacturer

Contact Apple Support if Bluetooth is grayed out, cannot be enabled, no accessory connects after the steps above, or the iPhone has signs of hardware damage. Contact the accessory manufacturer for model-specific pairing, firmware, reset, compatibility, or battery instructions—especially when the accessory works with other devices.

If possible, gather the iPhone model, iOS version, accessory model, whether the accessory appears under Settings > Bluetooth, and whether other Bluetooth accessories connect. Those details help support staff distinguish a pairing problem from an accessory or iPhone hardware fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Bluetooth device appear on my iPhone but not connect?

Forget the accessory in Settings > Bluetooth, confirm that it is not connected to another nearby device, restart it, put it back into discovery mode, and pair it again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does turning off Bluetooth in Control Center fix Bluetooth problems?

Control Center generally disconnects Bluetooth accessories but does not fully disable Bluetooth. For Bluetooth controls and pairing, use Settings > Bluetooth.

Will Reset All Settings delete everything on my iPhone?

No. Reset All Settings does not delete personal content such as photos, messages, apps, and documents. It does remove or restore many preferences, including Bluetooth pairings, Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, privacy permissions, and Apple Pay cards.

Should I reset network settings to fix Bluetooth?

Usually not for an isolated Bluetooth problem. Reset Network Settings is primarily for network-connection issues and is more disruptive. Try forgetting and re-pairing the accessory first.

The Bottom Line

Start with power, proximity, discovery mode, and Settings > Bluetooth. If the accessory appears but fails to connect, forget it and pair it again. Check a companion app’s permission only when an app is involved, then restart and update the iPhone. Reset All Settings is a last software step for problems affecting multiple accessories; do not use Erase All Content and Settings for an ordinary Bluetooth fault.
