If your iPhone is stuck on the “Connect to computer” or support.apple.com/iphone/restore screen, connect it to a computer and use Apple’s recovery steps for your iPhone model. Choose Update before Restore when prompted: Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data.
First, check whether the iPhone is actually stuck
Apple recommends recovery steps when the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, a computer reports that the iPhone is in recovery mode, the “Connect to computer” screen appears, or the phone repeatedly starts Recovery Assistant and cannot recover.
If you see an Apple logo with a progress bar during a restore or migration on iOS 13 or later, wait before intervening. Apple says the process can take over an hour. Start its recovery procedure only if the bar has not moved for at least one hour.
Prepare a computer and USB connection
Connect the iPhone to a computer with a compatible USB cable. On a Mac, use Finder with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, or iTunes with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier. On a Windows PC, use the Apple Devices app or iTunes. Apple advises keeping macOS up to date or installing the latest Apple Devices app on PC.

If you need a cable, use one that works with both your iPhone and computer; there is no need to replace a cable that already connects them reliably.
Put the iPhone into recovery mode
With the phone connected to the computer, follow the button sequence for its generation. Keep holding the final button or button combination until the “Connect to computer” screen appears.

iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the “Connect to computer” screen appears.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Press and hold the top or Side button and Volume Down together.
- Keep holding both until the “Connect to computer” screen appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation)
- Press and hold the Home button and the top or Side button together.
- Keep holding both until the “Connect to computer” screen appears.
Choose Update before Restore
When Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes offers the choice, select Update first. This attempts to install iOS without choosing the erase-and-reinstall option. If Update does not resolve the problem and you decide to proceed with Restore, understand that Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone. Do not treat it as a data-preserving step, and do not assume Update is guaranteed to work.
If the download takes the iPhone out of recovery mode
Apple says that if the software download takes more than 15 minutes, the iPhone may leave the “Connect to computer” screen. Let the download finish. Then repeat the button sequence for your iPhone generation to return it to recovery mode and continue.

When to contact Apple or a service provider
Seek service if the recovery procedure cannot update or restore the iPhone, or if a required button is broken or stuck. Apple’s guidance identifies those situations as reasons the device may need service.
