Start with the least disruptive checks: confirm the device supports the update, make sure it has enough available storage, use a reliable internet connection, and keep the device powered. Then choose the path that matches the failure: retry a wireless iPhone update, update the iPhone through a computer, use iPhone recovery mode for startup or recognition problems, or use macOS Recovery when a Mac installer fails. Avoid Restore or erasing a Mac unless less destructive steps have failed and you have checked your backup.
First identify what is failing
An update can fail while the device checks for an update, downloads it, verifies it, installs it, or starts afterward. The right fix depends on both the device and the stage. A slow progress bar is not, by itself, proof that an update has stopped: Apple says download time depends on the update’s size and internet speed. Keep the iPhone connected to power and allow the download time to reflect those conditions. Apple’s iPhone update guidance
Note the exact alert and when it appears. “Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update.” points to the check stage, while “Unable to Download. This update is not available because you are not connected to the internet.” appears during download. Those messages help distinguish a connection or server-contact problem from an installer that has already begun. They do not, by themselves, establish that the device needs to be erased.

Fix an iPhone wireless update that will not download or install
1. Confirm that the iPhone can receive the offered iOS version
Not every iPhone model supports every iOS release. If the newest release does not appear, first check whether the model is compatible with that release rather than treating the missing option as a failed download. Software Update offers updates for the device it can support; an unsupported model will not become eligible by freeing storage or repeating the check. Apple’s support page covers this compatibility requirement but does not establish a failure rate or promise that a particular troubleshooting step will work for every device. Apple: If your iPhone or iPad won’t update
This check is worth doing before changing settings or deleting anything. A missing update and a failed installation are different problems: if the phone is not eligible for that iOS release, the update will not appear regardless of how many times you retry. If an update is offered but an attempt fails, continue through the storage, network, and power checks.
2. Check the four prerequisites
Apple summarizes the requirements this way: “To update your iPhone or iPad, you need a compatible device, a power source, an internet connection and enough available storage.” Apple Support
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Compatibility: Verify that the iPhone model supports the iOS release being offered.
- Storage: Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If space is tight, offload unused apps or remove items you can safely replace. Apple notes that the device may remove app data that can be downloaded again; you do not have to assume that deleting personal photos or other irreplaceable files is necessary.
- Internet: Connect to Wi-Fi. Avoid competing downloads while the update is being fetched, particularly when the download is slow.
- Power: Keep the iPhone connected to a power source while the installation runs.
Check storage in the device’s own storage screen rather than guessing from the size of a file or app. If there is little room, start with things that are replaceable, such as unused apps or items you can safely download again. The point is to make enough space available for the update process, not to delete personal content unnecessarily. If adequate space is available already, focus on network access and the update itself instead of removing more items.
Likewise, a slow download can reflect the update’s size or the internet connection rather than an installation failure. Keep the phone on Wi-Fi, avoid competing downloads, and leave it connected to power while it proceeds. If an alert appears or the process repeatedly stops at the same stage, note that stage before moving to the next troubleshooting path.
3. Retry the check on a dependable network
If the iPhone reports that it cannot check for or verify an update, try again on the current network. If the same server or verification alert persists, connect to another Wi-Fi network and check again. Apple recommends trying another network when the device cannot reach or verify the update server. Apple’s troubleshooting steps
Changing networks is especially useful when the alert says the update is unavailable because the device is not connected to the internet, or when the phone cannot contact or verify the update server. Retry once on the current connection, then test a different Wi-Fi network if the message returns. This helps separate a persistent update-download problem from an issue with the network the phone was using. It is more useful than repeatedly pressing check for update on the same connection.

- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find and select the listed iOS update.
- Tap Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
This removes the update download, not the phone’s personal data. Make the next download on Wi-Fi and keep the phone connected to power while the installation runs. If the update is not listed in iPhone Storage, there is nothing to remove through this sequence; if it is listed but the same problem returns after a fresh download, move to a computer-assisted update rather than repeating the same download indefinitely. Apple’s iPhone update instructions
Update an iPhone using a Mac or Windows PC
A computer is a reasonable next option when a wireless download or verification repeatedly fails. Prepare the connection before retrying: Apple recommends current computer software, a direct USB connection, and an unlocked iPhone that trusts the computer. On Windows, update the Apple Devices app or iTunes; on a Mac, update macOS. Apple: Errors when updating or restoring an iPhone
This route addresses a persistent wireless-update problem; it is not the first step for every slow progress bar. If the iPhone starts normally, you can try the computer connection without choosing a data-erasing option. Keep the distinction between an update attempt and a restore clear: a prompt that offers both does not mean the two choices have the same consequences.

- Update the Mac’s macOS, or update Apple Devices or iTunes on the Windows PC.
- Connect the iPhone directly to a USB port on the computer. Do not route the connection through a keyboard or USB hub.
- Unlock the iPhone. If it asks whether to trust the computer, accept the prompt.
- Try the update again through the computer.
A direct connection avoids adding a hub or keyboard connection as another possible point of trouble. Keep the phone unlocked when establishing the connection so you can respond if it asks you to trust the computer. If the computer still does not recognize the phone, treat that as a connection or recognition symptom rather than repeatedly retrying the same wireless download.
If the computer reports an error or cannot keep the connection
Restart both the computer and iPhone, then retry. If the alert persists, change one part of the connection at a time: use another compatible iPhone USB cable, try another USB port, and, if available, test another computer on a different network. Check whether security software is interfering with the connection. These are troubleshooting alternatives, not a reason to buy a cable pre-emptively; try another compatible cable only when connection errors continue. Apple’s computer-update troubleshooting
Changing one part at a time can make the result easier to interpret: if the same phone connects with another cable or port, the original connection may have been the issue; if another computer and network are available, they provide a further test. Apple’s guidance presents these as things to try when an error persists, not as a guarantee that a particular cable or computer is defective.
If the iPhone starts normally and the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first when appropriate. These choices are not interchangeable: Update attempts to update iOS, while Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone. Before any Restore, confirm that a current backup exists and that you are prepared for the device to be erased. Apple: If you can’t update or restore your iPhone or iPod touch

Use iPhone recovery mode for startup or recognition problems
Move to Apple’s recovery-mode procedure if the computer cannot recognize the iPhone, the Apple logo remains on screen for several minutes without a progress bar, or the phone displays a connect-to-computer screen. These symptoms are different from an ordinary slow download, so repeatedly retrying the wireless update is not the relevant next step. Follow Apple’s instructions for the particular iPhone model; button combinations vary by model and should not be guessed. Apple’s recovery-mode instructions

Recovery mode is the path for the startup or recognition symptoms above, not simply a faster way to perform an ordinary wireless update. If a progress bar is visible, distinguish that from the Apple-logo-only symptom Apple describes. Use the model-specific steps from Apple rather than applying a button sequence intended for another iPhone.
When the computer presents Update or Restore in this situation, try Update first if that option is available and appropriate. Restore is the data-erasing choice. If recovery mode cannot update or restore the iPhone, or a required button is broken, Apple says the device may need service. Apple Support
Before proceeding with Restore, pause and verify your backup and the effect of erasing the device. If Update is available, it is the less destructive choice to try first. If the recovery process cannot update or restore the phone, or a button required for the procedure does not work, further attempts may not be possible without service.
Fix a Mac that will not install a macOS update
For a Mac, first determine whether the issue is an update not being offered or an installer that fails after you start it. Software Update only offers macOS versions compatible with that Mac. If it reports that the Mac is up to date, Apple says no new software is currently available for that Mac through that route; this does not mean that every Mac can install the newest macOS release. Apple: How to download and install macOS
That distinction matters when deciding what to troubleshoot. If the Mac says it is up to date, repeatedly retrying the same installer will not make an unsupported version appear. If an offered update starts and then fails, follow the installer troubleshooting sequence instead.
Check storage and internet before rerunning the installer
Make sure the Mac has enough available storage and a stable internet connection. The installer may need internet access not only to download macOS but also to obtain model-specific firmware or other information. If either requirement is unreliable, correct it before starting another installation attempt. Apple: If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS
A Mac installation can be affected by more than the visible macOS download. Because the installer may need to fetch information specific to the Mac model, a stable internet connection remains relevant even after the installer has started. If storage or internet access is inadequate, address that first instead of assuming that the installer file is the only issue.
Restart, then try safe mode if software may be interfering
If the installation began through Software Update or the App Store and failed, restart the Mac and try again. If another program or software component may be interfering, safe mode can help prevent other software from loading during startup; use Apple’s instructions for your Mac model to start safe mode, then retry the installation. If the installer still fails, use macOS Recovery rather than cycling through the same attempt. Apple’s macOS installation troubleshooting

Safe mode is a troubleshooting step when software interference may be involved, not a replacement for checking storage or connectivity. Follow the correct startup instructions for the Mac, since the procedure depends on the hardware. If the update still will not install after a restart and a safe-mode attempt, move on to Recovery rather than endlessly repeating the same Software Update or App Store installation.
Install from macOS Recovery and repair the startup disk if needed
macOS Recovery provides another route to install macOS after Software Update fails, and it can also reinstall macOS when the Mac has no working operating system. Follow Apple’s Recovery instructions for the Mac’s hardware. From Recovery, use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk when appropriate. If a previously downloaded installer is reported as damaged or unverifiable, Apple recommends deleting that installer and downloading it again after disk repair. Apple’s installation-error steps Apple’s macOS download and install guidance
Use Disk Utility in the Recovery troubleshooting sequence when the startup disk needs repair. If the installer message specifically says a downloaded installer is damaged or cannot be verified, Apple’s sequence is to repair the disk as appropriate, delete the existing installer, and download it again. Re-downloading before addressing a disk problem may simply repeat the same failure. Recovery is also an option when there is no working operating system, unlike a normal update retry from the desktop.
Reserve firmware recovery and erasure for the end of the sequence
Apple describes a firmware revive or restore as something that may rarely be needed on an Apple silicon Mac or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip. Erasing the Mac and resetting it to factory settings is a last resort, not a routine response to a failed installer. If the problem persists after the less destructive troubleshooting steps, contact Apple Support. Apple Support’s macOS troubleshooting guidance
Keep these options separate from reinstalling macOS through Recovery: firmware revive or restore is a rare escalation, and erasing the Mac is later still. Do not jump to erasure simply because the first installation attempt failed. If the Mac continues to fail after the applicable storage, network, restart, safe-mode, Recovery, and disk-repair steps, Apple Support can advise whether further service is needed.

Use the symptom—not just the fact that an update failed—to decide what to do next:
- iPhone, missing update: Check model compatibility before attempting a download.
- iPhone, download or verification alert: Check storage, Wi-Fi, and power; retry on another network if server or verification errors persist.
- iPhone, repeat wireless failure but normal startup: Update through a computer, with a direct connection and trusted pairing.
- iPhone, Apple logo without a progress bar, connect-to-computer screen, or recognition failure: Use the model-specific recovery-mode path.
- Mac, update unavailable: Confirm that the Mac supports the macOS version; an up-to-date message means no new update is currently offered through Software Update.
- Mac, installer error: Check storage and internet, restart, then consider safe mode or macOS Recovery and Disk Utility in that order.
- Any path that offers Restore or requires erasure: Stop and verify the backup and data-loss consequences before proceeding.
These routes differ in the stage they address and in their consequences. A wireless retry is appropriate for an iPhone that starts normally and has a download or verification problem. A computer update is a next step for repeat wireless failures. Recovery mode is for iPhone recognition or startup symptoms. macOS Recovery is for a failed Mac installer or a Mac without a working operating system. Update or reinstall attempts should come before Restore or erasure whenever the device state allows.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my iPhone check for an update?
If you see “Unable to Check for Update,” retry on the current network, then try another Wi-Fi network if the alert persists. Also confirm that the iPhone supports the iOS version and has enough storage and power.
What should I do if an iPhone update download is stuck?
A slow progress bar alone does not prove the update has failed; download time depends on update size and internet speed. Use Wi-Fi, avoid competing downloads, and keep the phone connected to power. If a download repeatedly fails, delete the listed update in Settings > General > iPhone Storage and download it again from Settings > General > Software Update.
Can I update my iPhone with a computer instead?
Yes. Update macOS or the Apple Devices app or iTunes on Windows, connect the iPhone directly to a computer USB port, unlock it, and accept Trust if prompted. If errors continue, restart both devices and test another compatible cable or port, or another computer and network.
Should I choose Update or Restore when prompted?
Try Update first when it is available and appropriate. Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data on the iPhone, so verify that you have a current backup and are prepared for the data loss before choosing it.
When should I put an iPhone in recovery mode?
Use Apple’s model-specific recovery-mode instructions if a computer cannot recognize the iPhone, the Apple logo remains for several minutes without a progress bar, or the phone shows a connect-to-computer screen. Do not guess the button combination; it varies by model.
Why does my Mac say it is up to date when I want a newer macOS version?
Software Update offers only versions compatible with that Mac. An up-to-date message means no new software is currently available for that Mac through Software Update; it does not mean every Mac can install the newest macOS release.
What should I try if a Mac macOS installer fails?
Check available storage and the internet connection, restart and retry, and consider safe mode if other software may be interfering. If it still fails, use macOS Recovery; Disk Utility can repair the startup disk when appropriate. Delete and re-download an installer reported as damaged or unverifiable after disk repair.

The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the symptom and work from least disruptive to most disruptive: check compatibility, storage, Wi-Fi, and power; retry or download the iPhone update through a computer; use recovery mode for iPhone startup or recognition problems; and use macOS Recovery for a failed Mac installer. Try Update before Restore, verify a backup before any data-erasing step, and leave Mac erasure or firmware recovery to the end of the troubleshooting path.
