When an AI agent uses too much memory or CPU, do not start by changing hardware or randomly disabling features. First identify the exact process, reproduce the spike with a repeatable task, and determine whether the work comes from the agent, its browser, an extension, an integration, a tool-call loop, or local model inference. Then change one supported setting and run the same measurement again.
The procedure differs for a browser automation agent, a local model, a monitoring agent, and a hosted service. The workflow below separates those cases and covers high CPU usage while idle, steadily growing memory, and battery drain.
Start by defining the symptom
“High CPU,” “too much memory,” and “battery drain” are different failures. A process can use substantial CPU briefly while completing useful inference, retain memory without leaking, or keep a browser page active after the agent appears finished. Write down what you actually observe before changing anything.
| Symptom | What to measure | Common places to look |
|---|---|---|
| CPU spike during a task | Process CPU percentage, duration, repeated work, and concurrent tasks | Agent process, browser tab, extension, tool call, local inference |
| High CPU usage while idle | CPU use after all visible work has stopped and the process has settled | Background page, polling loop, retry loop, extension, integration, or stuck session |
| Memory rises over hours or repeated runs | Working-set or resident memory over time, plus retained objects where profiling is available | Unbounded cache, detached web document nodes, listeners, closures, or a real workload increase |
| Battery falls unusually quickly | Battery discharge rate, active process, screen time, network activity, and whether inference is local | Local model computation, browser activity, display, other background software |
There is no cross-platform CPU, memory, or battery number that proves an agent is defective. A short peak can be normal; a steadily rising baseline or activity that continues while idle deserves investigation.

Use a measurement-and-isolation workflow
1. Record the environment and workload
Capture the agent name and version, operating system, whether execution is local or hosted, where the model runs if known, and the exact task that triggers the problem. Note whether the symptom appears only during a task, after a task, or with no task at all. Include the run duration and whether several sessions are active. This record prevents a fix for one workload from being mistaken for a general solution.
2. Reproduce the same action
Choose a repeatable workload: for example, the same browser flow, repository operation, monitoring window, or hosted request sequence. Let the system settle before recording a baseline. Run the workload for the same approximate duration each time. Change one factor per test so you can attribute an improvement or regression.
3. Find the responsible process
Open the operating system’s resource monitor and watch CPU, memory, and (where available) energy impact for the agent process and its child processes. An agent’s apparent usage may belong to its browser, an extension, an integration, or a helper process. Record the process name and whether its resource use tracks the workload.
Recommended Free Tools
For browser-based work, use the browser’s built-in task manager to distinguish tabs, extensions, and browser processes. Microsoft Edge opens its browser task manager with Shift+Esc; identify the tab or extension with the abnormal CPU or memory value instead of treating the whole browser as one process. Mozilla’s Firefox guidance likewise recommends its troubleshooting tools together with the operating system’s process monitor.
4. Capture a trace when the spike is reproducible
Use an application or agent trace if one is available. Traces can show recorded steps, tool calls, durations, statuses, retries, and overlapping work. Chrome DevTools for agents can record performance traces for browser activity. Look for a call that repeats, waits unusually long, launches parallel work, or keeps running after the visible task ends.
Do not confuse a usage counter with a complete resource or billing record. The Agents API documents usage fields as best-effort: values can be null and may change as accounting arrives. Model-token usage, CPU time, memory pressure, and battery drain are separate measurements.

Fix a browser agent with high CPU or memory usage
Identify the tab, extension, or process
Open the browser task manager while the workload is active and sort by CPU or memory. Repeat the observation after the task should be finished. A single tab that remains busy points to page behavior or the agent’s automation loop; an extension process points to an add-on; a browser utility process may indicate background work shared by several tabs.

Test extensions and themes separately
Disable or isolate extensions one at a time, or start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to test whether extensions or a theme are involved. Re-run the original workload after each change. If the problem disappears only when one extension is disabled, keep that extension isolated while checking for an update or a supported configuration rather than disabling unrelated features.
Check background activity
Determine whether work continues after the visible window is closed. Browser pages can remain active in the background. In Edge, inspect sleeping-tab and efficiency settings, and test hardware acceleration as browser-specific variables. These settings affect browser behavior; they are not universal fixes for a local model or service agent.
Protect an authenticated session
If an agent connects to an existing authenticated browser session, treat that session as accessible to the agent. Chrome warns that such an agent can inspect browser content and interact with the signed-in session. Use a separate profile with the minimum necessary access while diagnosing resource use.
Investigate memory that keeps growing
Use heap snapshots only for web memory
A JavaScript or WebAssembly application can be tested with a three-point heap comparison:
- Capture a baseline heap snapshot before the suspect action.
- Perform the action repeatedly or for the same duration that produces the increase, then capture a second snapshot.
- When the action can be reversed, undo it and capture a third snapshot. Compare objects retained after the reversal.
This method is specific to web memory analysis. It does not by itself diagnose a native process, a local model’s allocator, or operating-system memory pressure.

Check the common retention patterns
- Global event listeners that are never removed.
- Detached document nodes that remain referenced.
- Accidental global variables.
- Closures retaining large values after a task ends.
- Caches with no practical size or age bound.
A retained object is not automatically a leak. Confirm that it is unintended before changing application logic; a cache may be deliberately holding data for later work. A genuine leak usually appears as the same objects remaining reachable after the action has been reversed, with the baseline rising across repeated cycles.
Separate growth from a larger workload
Compare memory at the same point in the same workload, not just the final value after runs of different lengths. A larger repository, more browser tabs, more monitored processes, or more concurrent sessions can legitimately require more memory. If the baseline rises after equivalent cycles, provide the snapshots and reproduction steps to the software owner.
Reduce a monitoring or service agent’s footprint
Monitoring agents can consume resources because they inspect too many integrations, processes, logs, or metrics. Datadog’s high-consumption guidance identifies high-volume integrations, excessive process monitoring, log and metric volume, runtime consumption, and antivirus interactions as possible contributors.
Narrow discovery and process scope
Review the number and scope of integrations. Replace broad wildcards with specific hosts, services, containers, or process patterns where the agent supports that configuration. Remove checks for resources that are not needed for the operational question you are trying to answer.
Reduce collection only when the evidence supports it
If traces or agent metrics show that collection volume drives CPU, memory, or network use, increase collection intervals where appropriate or reduce unnecessary log and metric streams. Keep the data needed for alerts and compliance. An interval change that hides an incident is not an effective fix.
Check interactions with security software
Antivirus or endpoint-security scanning can amplify the cost of a busy agent, especially when it reads many short-lived files or logs. Test the interaction with the administrator’s approval and follow the security product’s supported exclusions process; do not broadly disable protection as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Size a hosted agent from a representative workload
For a hosted agent, first run a representative workload and inspect CPU, available memory, request rate, and request duration in the platform’s monitoring view. Compare peaks and sustained values with the configured allocation before changing it.
Account for per-session allocation
Microsoft Foundry’s hosted-agent guidance describes configured CPU and memory values per session, not as an aggregate allowance for every concurrent session. Ten simultaneous sessions can therefore consume substantially more total resources than one session with the same per-session setting. Record concurrency during the test and compare it with the expected production level.
Distinguish undersizing from inefficient work
If CPU and memory remain near their allocation only during legitimate parallel work, increasing capacity may be appropriate. If one session repeatedly retries, performs redundant tool calls, or retains memory after completion, allocate more capacity only as a temporary safety measure while correcting the workload. Use the platform’s current limits and sizing documentation because thresholds can change.
Use traces to find repeated or expensive work
A trace is most useful when it is aligned with the resource timeline. Mark the time of the CPU or memory spike, then inspect events in that interval. Useful clues include:
- The same tool call appearing repeatedly without a meaningful state change.
- Retries caused by an error that the agent never resolves.
- Several expensive tools running concurrently when they could be serialized.
- A browser page that remains active after the agent reports completion.
- Long waits followed by duplicate requests.
Correct the narrow cause shown by the trace: fix the retry condition, bound concurrency, stop a background poller, or narrow the tool’s scope. Re-run the original workload after each change. Do not infer CPU or memory from token totals; a short model response can trigger expensive browser or integration work, while a longer response may not.

Wait long enough for active work and cleanup to finish, then confirm that the agent is genuinely idle. Record the process tree and observe whether CPU remains elevated. In an idle case, prioritize background polling, a retry loop, an extension, an integration that continues collecting, or a session that was never closed.

- Observe whether the associated process exits or returns to a low, stable baseline.
- Restart with extensions and optional integrations isolated.
- Capture a trace or log if the process becomes busy again without a user action.
- Escalate with the process name, timestamps, configuration, and trace rather than a screenshot of a single percentage.
Do not terminate a process that may be writing data or handling a production task unless you have a safe recovery procedure.
Handle battery drain without guessing
Battery diagnosis depends on the operating system, device, power plan, and whether inference runs locally. A browser agent, a local model, a bright display, network activity, and unrelated background software can all contribute. The available guidance does not establish one universal battery setting or a hardware product that fixes every agent.
Measure battery discharge while repeating the same workload, then repeat with the agent stopped. Compare active processes and energy information in the operating system’s battery or resource view. If local inference is the only variable that tracks the discharge, reduce unnecessary runs, concurrency, or model work using settings the agent supports. If the browser remains active, follow the browser isolation steps instead. Consider a battery replacement, memory upgrade, or cooling accessory only after the measured bottleneck justifies it and the device is identified.

| Evidence | Targeted action | What to verify afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Busy browser tab or extension | Isolate the tab, extension, or theme; check background activity | Same workload uses less CPU or memory and the process settles when finished |
| Retained web objects after reversal | Remove unintended listeners or references; bound the cache | Heap returns toward baseline across repeated cycles |
| Repeated tool calls or retries | Correct the loop, error handling, or concurrency | Trace shows one necessary call and a shorter task duration |
| Broad monitoring collection | Narrow integrations and process scopes; adjust intervals or volume | Agent metrics fall without losing required coverage |
| Hosted sessions near allocation | Reduce unnecessary concurrency or increase supported per-session capacity | CPU, memory, request rate, and duration remain within the production envelope |
| Battery drain tied to local inference | Reduce unnecessary local work or move work only where the platform supports it | Discharge rate improves during the identical workload |
Recheck, document, and escalate
After every targeted change, repeat the original workload and compare the same measurements. Keep a short change log containing the process, workload, time range, configuration change, CPU and memory observations, battery result if relevant, and the outcome. This makes a regression visible and gives support staff usable evidence.
If no branch isolates the cause, send the vendor or administrator the trace, heap profile where applicable, process names, agent and operating-system versions, concurrency, configuration scope, and exact reproduction steps. Remove credentials and private page contents before sharing browser traces. Evidence is more actionable than a claim that the agent is “slow” or “using too much RAM.”
Bottom line
Fix excessive AI-agent resource use by measuring the responsible process during a repeatable workload, tracing the activity that correlates with the spike, and changing only the setting supported by that evidence. Browser agents need tab and extension isolation; web memory growth needs retention testing; monitoring agents need scope and collection review; hosted agents need per-session and concurrency analysis; battery problems need device-specific measurement. Re-run the same test after each change, and escalate with traces and profiles when the cause remains unproven.
