Start with Bluetooth, audio output, charging, and seating checks; then reconnect using the setup control for your case model. Reset only if those steps fail. AirPods Max has separate connection and reset instructions, so do not follow earbud-case steps for it.
Start with your device and audio settings
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you’re using, and confirm Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods in their case and check that each one is charging.
- When testing playback, select AirPods as the device’s audio output and raise the device volume.
These checks help separate an issue with the host device or audio routing from a problem with pairing or the AirPods themselves. If they do not help, try pairing again with the case control for your model.
Reconnect AirPods using the right case control
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 15 seconds. Open the lid.
- Put the case near your iPhone or iPad. For AirPods 4/5 and AirPods Pro 3, double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white. For other models covered by Apple’s instructions, press and hold the setup button on the back until the light flashes white.
- Follow the prompts on your iPhone or iPad. On a Mac, you may need to pair the AirPods manually.
Use Apple’s connection troubleshooting instructions for the current steps for your model. AirPods Max has separate connection guidance and does not use earbud-case controls.
If AirPods won’t charge
Check the case, cable, and power source
- Check which connector your charging case has—Lightning or USB-C—and use a matching cable. The connector depends on the case, not just the AirPods family name.
- Firmly connect the cable to the case, adapter, and a working power source.
- Leave AirPods or AirPods Pro in the closed case to charge for at least 15 minutes, as Apple advises.
- Check the charge status on an Apple device or at the case.
If you use a wireless charging case
Reposition the case on the Qi-compatible charger if its status light does not appear. If repositioning does not help, try a compatible wired connection. Apple’s charging troubleshooting instructions cover cable connections, charge status, and charging checks.

If one AirPod won’t play audio
First confirm both AirPods are seated in the case and charging, then select AirPods as the audio output on your device and check its volume. If one side still has no sound, use Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Pro sound support index to find the relevant one-sided audio and cleaning guidance. Follow the cleaning instructions for your exact model; avoid improvising with liquids, sharp objects, or tools.
Restart or reset only after basic checks
Restart
For AirPods and AirPods Pro, Apple describes a restart as closing the case for at least 10 seconds. Then reopen it and test the connection or playback again.

Reset and reconnect
If restarting does not help, reset using Apple’s instructions for your exact generation. Older models named in Apple’s guidance use the rear setup button; AirPods 4/5 and AirPods Pro 3 use front-of-case double taps. The reset procedure depends on a specific status-light sequence, so follow Apple’s reset instructions rather than applying one generation’s steps to another. AirPods Max has separate reset guidance.
A reset can clear custom settings, which you may need to restore. Afterward, reconnect by bringing the open case near the device and following the on-screen prompts.

Check firmware, then consider service
Give automatic firmware updates time to install
Apple says firmware updates install automatically when AirPods are charging and within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected iPhone, iPad, or Mac. For Apple’s described update setup, leave the AirPods in their closed case in that environment for at least 30 minutes, then check the firmware version using its firmware update instructions.
Request service if the problem remains
If the connection, charging, or audio problem persists after the checks above, review your coverage and service options. Apple lists in-person and mail-in service and provides an estimate; final options and charges depend on inspection, coverage, and location. Start with Apple’s AirPods service page.
