If your AirPods Pro won’t connect, won’t charge, or have no sound in one ear, start with the check for that specific symptom before resetting them. Confirm your AirPods Pro generation and charging-case type first: Apple’s reset and cleaning instructions are model-specific, and charging cables vary by case. Work through the steps below in order; if the issue persists after Apple’s documented checks, arrange service.

Before you start: identify your AirPods Pro and case

Check whether you have AirPods Pro 1, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3, and identify the charging case. This matters because case controls, compatible charging connections, and cleaning procedures differ. The reset steps below apply to AirPods Pro 1 and 2; do not assume they apply to Pro 3.

Use the cable that matches your case. For cleaning, follow Apple’s guide for your specific generation rather than applying one procedure to every AirPods Pro model.

Fix AirPods Pro that won’t connect

  1. Check the paired device. Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you want to use, and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Confirm the AirPods have power. Put both AirPods in the case and check their charge status on a paired device or at the case.
  3. Select AirPods Pro as the audio output. Put them in your ears, open the device’s audio-output controls, and select your AirPods. Check that the volume is audible.
  4. Try pairing again. Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then open it and follow Apple’s pairing instructions for your device.
  5. Reset only if re-pairing fails. Use the generation-specific reset steps below.

Fix AirPods Pro that won’t charge

  1. Check the power setup. Connect the case using a cable compatible with that case. Firmly seat both cable ends and confirm the power adapter is plugged into a working outlet.
  2. Give them time to charge. Leave the AirPods in the closed case, connected to power, for at least 15 minutes.
  3. If you use wireless charging, reposition the case. Place it on a Qi-compatible charger with the status light facing up. If the case does not indicate charging, adjust its position; if that does not help, try a compatible wired connection.
  4. Check charge status. Use a paired device or the case to confirm whether the case and AirPods are charging.
  5. Check for debris safely. Follow Apple’s cleaning precautions for the case. Do not insert metal or other objects into the charging port.
  6. Reset if the checks do not help. A reset returns custom settings to their defaults.

Fix one AirPod with no sound

  1. Make sure the case has charge, then check the charging port for debris and clean it only as Apple directs.
  2. Put both AirPods in the case and charge them for 30 seconds. Check that each AirPod is charging.
  3. Leave the AirPod that works in the closed case and test the silent AirPod by itself.
  4. If the silent AirPod still does not work, reset the AirPods. If you have just replaced an AirPod, follow Apple’s replacement setup instructions instead of treating it as a routine pairing problem.

Fix one AirPod that is quieter or sounds muffled

Uneven volume and silence are different problems: a quieter AirPod may still connect and play audio. First remove the ear tips and inspect the speaker and microphone mesh for debris. Clean only with the procedure Apple provides for your model. Then check the left-right audio balance on the paired device; on supported Apple devices, look under Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance.

Apple says fit and seal affect sound quality and noise cancellation, and provides fit testing for AirPods Pro 1 and 2. Replacement tips address fit or seal problems—not connection, charging, or internal hardware faults.

For the case, Apple recommends a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for debris around charging ports.

When to contact Apple or an authorized service provider

Seek service if the AirPods still will not connect, charge, or play sound after the applicable checks, re-pairing, and reset. Use Apple’s current support and service options, and check coverage using the serial number and your region.

Apple’s AirPods Pro sound-issue program was a historical, limited program—not a blanket current repair offer. Apple said it covered a small percentage of units manufactured before October 2020 with specified crackling or static sounds, or active noise cancellation problems. Units had to be inspected; the case was not replaced. The program’s stated coverage period was three years after first retail sale, according to Apple’s page dated October 1, 2021. That historical term does not establish eligibility for service now.
