Start with the symptom: for connection trouble, check Bluetooth and retry pairing; for charging trouble, connect the USB-C case to power for at least 15 minutes; for missing or quiet audio from one AirPod, check its charge, mesh, and audio balance. Reset only after these basic checks. AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) have a different case from standard AirPods 4, and only the ANC Wireless Charging Case supports wireless charging.
If your AirPods 4 won’t connect
Apple’s first recommendation for AirPods that will not connect is to try pairing them again. Work through these checks before resetting them.
- Update the iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS or iPadOS, or the Mac to the latest macOS.
- Put both AirPods in the case and confirm that both are charging. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled on the device.
- Put the AirPods in your ears. On the iPhone or iPad, open Control Centre and select the AirPods from the audio output list. Check that the device volume is up.
- If the AirPods do not appear or still will not connect, return them to the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then open it.
- To pair with an iPhone or iPad, open the case and double-tap its front until the status light flashes white. Hold the open case near the device and follow the pairing prompt. On a Mac, pair the AirPods manually through Bluetooth settings.
- If pairing still fails, use the reset sequence below.
The pairing-mode double-tap is not the same as the three-part double-tap sequence used to reset AirPods 4. Apple’s connection guidance is at If your AirPods or AirPods Pro won’t connect.

First check the power source and cable. AirPods 4 cases charge through USB-C, but wireless charging depends on which case you own.

- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and connect the case to power. Leave it charging for at least 15 minutes.
- Check that both ends of the cable are firmly connected and that the power source works. If possible, try a compatible cable and working power source.
- Check the charge status on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or check the case status light. If there is no status light, Apple says the AirPods may need charging before use.
- If you have an ANC Wireless Charging Case and are using a wireless mat, place the case with its status light facing up. If the light does not turn on, reposition the case or use a compatible cable and power source.

If you suspect debris in the case’s charging port, use the safe cleaning method below. Do not insert anything into the port.

If one AirPod is silent or quieter than the other
A one-sided audio problem can be related to charging, debris, or the left-right balance setting. Check those before resetting.

Put both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds, then check their charge status on the device.
- Test the affected AirPod on its own: leave the other AirPod in the case and close the lid. If the affected AirPod works, return both AirPods to the case for another 30 seconds, then test them together.
- If one side is quieter, check the earbud mesh for debris and open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance. Center the balance slider.
- If one AirPod remains silent after these checks, reset the AirPods using the steps below.

How to reset AirPods 4
Reset after the symptom-specific checks above. A reset can clear custom AirPods settings, so you may need to restore them afterward.
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth. If the AirPods appear, tap the More Info button next to them and choose Forget This Device.
- Open the case. While the status light is on, double-tap the front of the case.
- When the light flashes white, double-tap the front again.
- When the light flashes faster, double-tap the front a third time. Wait for the light to flash amber and then white.
- Place the open case near the iPhone or iPad and follow the on-screen pairing instructions. If the light does not complete the expected sequence, close the lid for 20 seconds and repeat the AirPods 4 reset sequence.

How to clean AirPods 4 safely
Clean only when debris may be affecting charging or sound, and follow Apple’s instructions for the specific part. Do not run AirPods under water, use sharp objects or abrasives, or let liquid enter ports.
Clean the AirPods 4 earbud meshes
Apple specifies either a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit or its method using micellar water and a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush. Clean only the encircled meshes—not other parts of the AirPods. The detailed process includes brushing the mesh in circles for about 15 seconds, blotting, repeating the cleaning passes, rinsing the brush with distilled water, then repeating the procedure with distilled water. Let the AirPods dry completely for at least two hours before placing them in the case or using them.

Clean the case
- Use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush to remove debris from the charging port. Do not insert anything into the port and do not allow liquid into it.
- Wipe the case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If needed, Apple says the cloth may be slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

When to contact Apple Support
If the appropriate pairing, charging, or reset steps—and safe cleaning when relevant—do not resolve the fault, check Apple’s AirPods support and service options. Coverage and available service options depend on the situation; confirm the terms with Apple rather than assuming a repair is covered.
