If your soundbar is silent, check power, mute, input selection, cable connections, and the TV’s audio output before changing settings or replacing anything. If sound plays but does not match the picture, test another source first, then adjust the TV, playback device, or soundbar’s audio-delay setting. HDMI ARC/eARC and optical connections need different checks, so identify your connection before troubleshooting.
Fix a soundbar with no sound
Work through these checks in order. Menu names and connection requirements vary by TV and soundbar, so use the manuals for your exact models when labels differ.
1. Check power, mute, volume, and input
- Confirm the soundbar is powered on and not muted. Raise its volume and the TV volume to a moderate level.
- Set the soundbar to the input connected to the TV, such as TV, HDMI, or Optical.
- In the TV’s sound settings, select the external audio system or soundbar as the audio output. Some setups do not switch to an external device automatically. Bose’s Lifestyle Ultra instructions, for example, include checking power and manually selecting the TV source: Bose Lifestyle Ultra troubleshooting.
2. Test another soundbar source
Play audio through another input, such as Bluetooth or a music service if your soundbar supports one. If that works, the soundbar can produce audio; focus on the TV’s output setting, the connected source, cable path, and selected input. If no source produces sound, consult the soundbar maker’s troubleshooting instructions for your model. Bose recommends checking connections, audio settings, and volume and testing another source for no-audio reports: Bose Smart Soundbar 700 troubleshooting.
3. Check the HDMI ARC/eARC connection
If you use HDMI for TV audio, the cable must connect the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s corresponding ARC connection. A regular TV HDMI input may not return audio to the soundbar. Reseat both ends and check the TV’s sound settings for ARC/eARC and audio output options; some TVs require ARC to be enabled. Bose specifies High Speed or better HDMI for its Soundbar 500 setup and notes that some TVs need ARC activated: Bose Soundbar 500 setup guidance. For model-specific port and menu instructions, see the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 setup guidance.

HDMI ARC carries TV audio and can also provide HDMI-CEC control, such as using one remote for compatible devices. The TV’s ARC and CEC behavior and the soundbar’s capabilities must be compatible for those functions to work as expected. Bose describes ARC and CEC in its Smart Soundbar 900 setup instructions.
4. Check audio format and source settings
Review the TV and playback device’s audio-output settings, including ARC/CEC options and the selected audio format. If the devices are not negotiating audio correctly, a supported simpler format may help isolate the problem. Bose’s Smart Soundbar 700 troubleshooting path suggests PCM as a diagnostic setting for that model; treat it as a test, not a universal setting or permanent requirement: Bose Smart Soundbar 700 no-audio steps.

5. Restart devices and reseat the cables
Restart the source device, TV, and soundbar, then test again. If the fault persists, follow the manufacturer’s HDMI reset procedure rather than assuming every model uses the same sequence. Bose’s Soundbar 700 procedure includes powering devices down, disconnecting and reseating HDMI cables, then powering the TV and source before the soundbar: Bose Soundbar 700 troubleshooting.

6. Compare HDMI ARC/eARC with optical
If the devices have compatible optical ports, optical can help determine whether the fault is specific to HDMI ARC/CEC. Optical does not carry HDMI-CEC commands, so remote-control functions that depend on CEC may not work through that connection. Format support varies by device; check both manuals before switching.

- BLUETOOTH TV SPEAKER: Pair your device to this Bluetooth soundbar to wirelessly stream your favorite music and podcasts. Connect up to 3 devices through the inputs (HDMI, Optical in, and AUX in); the first powered on device will automatically connect
- SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
| Connection | What to check | When it may suit the setup |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | Use the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s matching ARC connection; check TV audio routing and ARC/CEC settings. | When both devices support the connection and you want TV audio plus compatible HDMI-CEC control. |
| Optical | Confirm both devices have compatible optical ports and select optical as the soundbar input and TV output. | When ARC/eARC is unavailable or HDMI ARC/CEC is unreliable. Optical does not carry HDMI-CEC commands. |
7. Try another HDMI cable if the fault remains
After confirming the correct ports and settings, test with a known-good High-Speed HDMI cable. A cable can fail without visible damage, so replacement is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. Bose recommends trying another cable for persistent HDMI audio faults: Bose Smart Soundbar 700 troubleshooting. If optical works but HDMI does not, continue checking ARC/CEC settings, ports, and the HDMI path.
Fix sound and video that are out of sync
Lip-sync mismatch is different from silence: audio reaches the soundbar, but it arrives before or after the picture. Change one setting at a time and replay the same scene so you can tell whether the adjustment helped.

- Straight from the theater to your home: easy set-up, built-in tweeter, 2-ch speaker with simple Bluetooth connection
- Deep sound with Bass Reflex speaker
- High power with a slim design that matches any room and is perfect for small living spaces
- Voice enhancement feature is great for TV content with hushed dialogue, or to make conference call participants easier to hear
- Easy TV set up with HDMI ARC
1. Find out whether the problem is content-specific
Try another channel, recording, app, or playback source. If the mismatch occurs only with one program or app, the source may be responsible rather than the soundbar connection. Bose identifies testing another source as a way to narrow down sync problems: Bose Smart Soundbar 700 troubleshooting and Bose Smart Soundbar 900 troubleshooting.

2. Adjust delay on the TV or playback device
Look in the TV and source-device sound or playback settings for an audio delay or lip-sync control. Adjust it while replaying the same scene. The names and direction of adjustment vary: some controls delay audio, while others may compensate in a different way. Check the device’s help text or manual before making a large change.

Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
3. Adjust the soundbar’s audio delay, if available
If the soundbar has an Audio Delay control, make a small adjustment and replay the scene. For the Smart Ultra Soundbar specifically, Bose documents a setting from 0 (no delay) to 200 (maximum), which delays the sound; this range and behavior should not be assumed for other soundbars: Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar audio-delay guidance.
4. Restart if sync drifts after pausing
If the mismatch grows after pausing and resuming playback, restart the affected source or product and test again. Bose documents this pause-and-resume behavior for some connected devices and recommends renewing the Bluetooth connection in the relevant troubleshooting path: Bose Smart Soundbar 700 troubleshooting and Bose Smart Soundbar 900 troubleshooting.
5. Update or reset only after simpler tests
If another source, delay adjustments, and a restart do not resolve the mismatch, check for available device updates or a model-specific reset procedure. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for each device; a reset can change settings, and the procedure is not interchangeable across models. Bose’s named model support pages provide product-specific troubleshooting steps: Soundbar 700, Soundbar 900, and Smart Ultra Soundbar.
