Most buffering and Wi-Fi drops on a smart TV come from one of four places: weak wireless signal at the TV, a router or band setting the TV does not handle well, a problem with the internet service itself, or a single streaming app. The fastest way to tell them apart is to test in a fixed order: confirm whether the internet is down for every device, restart the equipment, measure signal at the TV, and then compare Wi-Fi against a wired connection or a second network. Work through the steps below before changing advanced settings or resetting the TV.
Start by finding out what is actually failing
A TV that shows “connected” can still fail to stream. Your router can have a working local connection while the internet link is down, and the TV will show a network icon the whole time. Before touching the TV, check two things.
- Other devices: Open a public website on a phone or laptop on the same Wi-Fi. If those devices also fail, the problem is the router, modem or internet service, not the TV. Restart the modem and router, and if the outage continues, contact your internet provider.
- The TV’s own connection status: On Roku, go to Settings > Network > Check connection. The test reports whether the device has a good connection to the router and whether that connection reaches the internet, which are separate results. Then check Settings > Network > About for the reported signal strength. Roku’s support documentation describes these results. Other brands use different menu names, so look up the menu path in your model’s manual.
If only the TV is affected and the other devices work, continue with the steps below.
The troubleshooting sequence
1. Restart the TV and the network equipment
Power off the TV, then unplug the modem and router for about 30 seconds. Restore power to the modem first, wait for its lights to settle, then power the router. Once the network indicators show a stable connection, turn the TV back on and retest. Sony’s guidance for intermittent Wi-Fi drops on Android TV recommends this same restart sequence and keeping the TV software current. Roku also recommends restarting its device and network equipment for connection problems. A restart fixes temporary faults, but if the drops return within a short time the cause is still present.

- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
2. Measure signal at the TV, not beside the router
A router placed in a hallway or cabinet can look strong on a phone in the same room while the TV, at the far end of the house, receives a weak signal. Samsung’s guidance is to check signal strength with a phone held beside the TV. Roku associates poor signal with frequent buffering and disconnects. If the TV reports a weak signal:
- Move the router to a higher, more central location, away from microwave ovens, thick walls and metal objects.
- Reduce obstructions between the router and the TV, including large cabinets and aquariums.
- If repositioning is not practical, a Wi-Fi range extender or mesh system can help. Confirm the coverage problem first, because these add cost and do nothing for an internet outage, an app fault or a TV defect.
3. Run a wired test if the TV has an Ethernet port
Roku’s support says that if a Roku player or TV has an Ethernet port, a wired connection is more stable than Wi-Fi. Connect the TV to the router with an Ethernet cable and stream the same video that buffered. Sony and LG also include wired connection guidance for their TVs.
- Wired works, Wi-Fi does not: The wireless signal, band or router’s Wi-Fi configuration is the more likely cause. Return to the signal and band steps.
- Wired also buffers: The fault is more likely in the internet connection, the router, the app or the TV itself. A passing wired test does not prove that the TV or internet service is fault-free; it only narrows the search.
The cable is the only extra hardware this test needs. Confirm that both the TV and the router have Ethernet ports, and that the TV is not hidden behind a wall plate or other fixed installation.

4. Use a phone hotspot to separate the home network from the TV
If the TV has no Ethernet port, a hotspot test can still separate the two sides of the problem. Turn on the personal hotspot on a phone, connect the TV to that network, and stream the same content. LG and Roku both describe using a different network to identify whether the home network or the device is involved.
- TV works on the hotspot but not at home: Investigate the home network: router placement, the internet connection, or the router’s settings. Ask your internet provider or router maker about coverage, compatibility or outages.
- TV fails on the hotspot too: The fault is more likely in the TV or the app. Move to the app and software steps, then contact the TV manufacturer with the model number and the results of these tests.
A hotspot test uses mobile data. Turn the hotspot off after the diagnosis, and watch the data use if you stream video on it.
5. Test the Wi-Fi band and router channel only if the TV supports the change
Many routers broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. The 5 GHz band is faster but covers less distance, and some TVs handle it poorly. Before you change anything, check which bands your TV actually supports in its manual or network settings.

- Older Samsung models: Samsung notes that certain 2018 model families, listed as
NU6***,NU71**,NU72**andNU73**, support only 2.4 GHz, not 5 GHz. On these sets, a 5 GHz network will never appear. - DFS channels: Roku states that some models cannot use particular 5 GHz DFS channels. If the TV cannot see the 5 GHz network, set the router to a channel the TV supports, or move the router to a non-DFS 5 GHz channel.
Router menu names differ by manufacturer, and some channel and band options are hidden in advanced settings. If you do not know the router’s settings, contact the router maker or your internet provider before making changes. Do not change the router’s security type or name without noting the old settings so you can restore them.
6. Check whether only one app is affected
If one app buffers while others play smoothly, the problem is probably that app rather than the Wi-Fi. LG notes that an issue confined to a single app may be app-specific. Check the app’s status page or support information, update the app from the TV’s app store, and sign out and back in if the app shows a playback error.
Speed requirements also differ by service. Roku notes that individual streaming services can set their own minimums. A connection that handles one service can fail with a higher-quality setting on another, so check the video quality setting in the affected app and lower it temporarily to test.

The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
7. Install TV software updates
Update the TV software through the model’s official settings menu. Sony’s guidance for intermittent Wi-Fi drops includes keeping the software current, and updates can correct wireless driver and connection faults. After the update, restart the TV and retest. If the update is not offered, check the manufacturer’s support site for your model.
8. Factory reset only as a last step
A factory reset can clear a persistent configuration fault, but it erases the TV’s settings, saved Wi-Fi passwords and app sign-ins. You will need to set up the network and apps again. Use it only after the restart, signal, wired, hotspot, band, app and update steps have failed, and after you have noted your network name and password.
Speed figures to check against your connection
Roku’s support lists these typical download speeds for its streaming devices:
Best Value
- 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨 𝟕 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝟒-𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐁𝐄𝟓𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐃𝐮𝐚𝐥-𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐢𝐅𝐢 𝟕: Delivers up to 4324 Mbps (5 GHz) and 688 Mbps (2.4 GHz) speeds for 4K/8K streaming, AR/VR gaming, and more◇. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, & obstacles such as walls.
- 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐖𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞-𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞: Covers up to 6,600 sq. ft. for over 150 devices with the option to expand anytime by adding another Deco router. All Deco routers work together.

- 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩 & 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Set up and control your network in minutes with the Deco App. Keep your WiFi performing at its best by keeping the firmware updated through the App. All Wi-Fi routers require a separate modem. ⌂
- 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐲𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- 3 Mbps for standard-definition (SD) streaming.
- 5 Mbps for high-definition (HD) streaming.
- 25 Mbps or more for 4K Ultra HD streaming.
These are Roku’s guidance figures, not universal thresholds. Other devices in the home sharing the connection use bandwidth, and streaming services set their own minimums. Run a speed test on a device connected to the same router, and compare the result against the requirement for the quality you are trying to watch. Samsung’s support makes the same point, stating: “Network requirements vary between TVs and are listed in the user manual.”
Compare the diagnostic routes
| Route | What it tells you | What you need | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restart the modem, router and TV | Whether a temporary fault is the cause | Nothing extra | Does not fix a recurring signal or configuration fault |
| Signal check at the TV | Whether the TV receives a weak signal | The TV’s network status screen, or a phone beside the TV | Shows signal strength only, not internet access |
| Wi-Fi band or channel change | Whether the TV connects better on another band or channel | A TV that supports the chosen band and channel | Not stated for all TV models; some 2018 Samsung models support 2.4 GHz only |
| Ethernet test | Whether wired streaming works where Wi-Fi fails | An Ethernet cable, and Ethernet ports on the TV and router | Does not prove that the TV or internet service is fault-free |
| Phone hotspot test | Whether the home network or the TV is the likely source | A phone with personal hotspot and mobile data | Uses mobile data; turn the hotspot off after the test |
| Range extender or mesh system | Whether poor coverage is the cause | Money, and a home layout that cannot be fixed by moving the router | Does not correct an internet outage, app fault or TV defect |
| Factory reset | Whether a persistent configuration fault is the cause | Your Wi-Fi password and app sign-in details | Erases settings and requires setup of the network and apps again |
When to contact the internet provider or the TV maker
- Contact your internet provider if other devices cannot reach the internet, if the outage continues after restarting the modem, or if the TV works on a hotspot but not on your home network and you suspect the provider’s equipment or coverage.
- Contact the router maker if the router’s band, channel or security settings are not behaving as the manual describes.
- Contact the TV manufacturer if the TV fails on more than one network after the steps above, or if a factory reset does not solve the problem. Have the model number, software version and the results of your signal, wired and hotspot tests ready.
An Ethernet cable is the most useful purchase for this problem when the TV and router both have Ethernet ports. Buying one does not fix a weak internet connection, a faulty app or a failed component in the TV, so run the wired test before spending on other equipment.
