If your second monitor does not appear in display settings, check its power and selected input, reseat the video cable, and then use your computer’s display-detection controls. If that does not work, test the monitor with a direct connection and isolate the cable, adapter, dock, and computer before changing drivers or buying hardware. These steps apply to Windows 10 and 11; Mac-specific checks are included below.
Start with the monitor, cable, and display mode
- Make sure the monitor is switched on and set to the input that matches the port you are using, such as HDMI or DisplayPort. Use the monitor’s built-in controls to change its input if needed.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the video cable at both the monitor and computer. If there is a dock, hub, or adapter in the path, check each connection too.
- On Windows, press Windows+P and select Extend if you want a separate desktop across both screens. Other modes, such as PC screen only or Second screen only, can make the arrangement look wrong even when Windows has selected a different display mode. A monitor that appears in display settings but stays black is different from one that is not detected. If it appears in settings, check the monitor’s input and brightness before moving on to connection-detection troubleshooting.
Use Windows to detect the second display
In Windows 11 or Windows 10, open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays > Detect. If the labels differ on your version, search Settings for Display and look for the multiple-display controls. Microsoft documents this path in its guide to using multiple monitors in Windows.
If the setup worked before and stopped suddenly, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver; Microsoft says this may fix the issue. You may hear a beep or see the screen flicker. Restarting the computer is another basic check, but neither step is guaranteed to restore detection.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 no longer receives free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date.
Isolate the cable, adapter, dock, and monitor
Change one part of the connection at a time so you can identify where the failure occurs. A successful test with another cable is useful only if that cable supports the connection and display mode you need.

- Try another compatible video cable. If the replacement works, the original cable may be faulty or unsuitable. An unsupported cable or adapter can also leave a display dark or limit its resolution or refresh rate, Apple notes in its guidance on external displays that are dark or low resolution.
- Bypass the dock or adapter. Connect the monitor directly to the computer if its ports allow it. If the direct connection works, reconnect the dock and other accessories one at a time to see which part changes the result. Microsoft recommends disconnecting accessories such as docks, dongles, and adapters as a diagnostic test.
- Test the monitor with another computer, if available. If it also fails there, the monitor, its input selection, or its cable may be involved. If it works, focus on the original computer’s port, settings, or display capability. This test helps narrow the cause; it does not prove which component has failed.
A dock or USB adapter can add an output on a computer with only one video output, but only if the computer and accessory support the intended setup. Check the computer maker’s specifications before choosing one. A video splitter is not a substitute for another independent output: Microsoft says it duplicates the same signal instead of creating separate extended displays.

A port’s shape alone does not establish what video it can carry. For a USB-C connection, Microsoft says the computer, cable, and connected device or adapter must support the same relevant USB-C Alternate Mode, and the connection must use a port that supports that mode. Microsoft names DisplayPort, MHL, and HDMI Alternate Modes in its USB-C troubleshooting guidance. Check the exact computer model’s specifications and port markings rather than assuming every USB-C port supports video.

If one external monitor works but adding another makes a display disappear, the computer or its graphics adapter may not support the desired number of displays. Check the computer or graphics-adapter maker’s specifications for supported display count and any limits tied to the ports being used.

- The computer port’s video capability and the monitor’s input.
- Whether the cable or adapter supports the required video mode.
- The computer’s supported display count for the intended connection.
- The target resolution and refresh rate.
- Whether a dock adds an independent output or a splitter merely duplicates a signal.
Troubleshoot a second display on a Mac
Apple says a Mac should detect an external display automatically when the display has power and is connected properly. Check the monitor’s input, cable seating, and any adapter required for the Mac’s port.
- Disconnect the display from the Mac and from its power source, then reconnect both.
- Put the Mac to sleep and wake it. On a Mac laptop, briefly close and reopen the lid.
- If the display is detected but dark, check brightness and the monitor’s built-in controls.
- Install the latest macOS updates. For a non-Apple display, check its maker’s information for available firmware updates.
- Confirm the exact Mac model supports the number of connected displays at your chosen resolution and refresh rate. Apple’s Mac display-connection guide describes model-dependent support.
Apple notes that software can affect display detection and available resolutions or refresh rates. Updates may help, but are not a guaranteed fix.

When to replace an accessory
Replace or add an accessory only after testing shows that the current connection is the likely problem. A compatible monitor video cable may be appropriate if a known-good cable restored the display or the existing one lacks the required capability. If the computer and monitor use different ports, consider an adapter only after confirming the computer port supports video in the required mode. Choose a dock only after verifying its compatibility and the computer’s supported display count.
There is no universal cable, adapter, or dock that will make every second monitor work: capability depends on the computer, ports, cable, adapter, display, and configuration.
