Start by setting the affected monitor to its recommended (usually native) resolution, then adjust scaling separately. If the image is still blurry, check the cable, adapter, port and display driver in that order. A cable replacement is a useful test—not a universal fix.
1. Set the monitor to its recommended resolution
A monitor can display resolutions below its native resolution, but the image may be less sharp or oddly sized. Microsoft notes that a lower-than-native mode can make text look less sharp and may produce a small, centered, black-bordered or stretched picture. Microsoft Support explains how to change resolution and layout in Windows.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the monitor that looks wrong. If you use more than one display, make sure you have selected the affected one.
- Under Display resolution, choose the option marked Recommended.
- Confirm the change and check whether text and other screen content look sharper.
If the recommended option seems incorrect or is missing, check the monitor’s manual or model-specific support page for its native resolution and supported modes. Windows’ recommendation is a useful starting point, but the monitor documentation can help confirm the right mode.
Mac with an external display
Open the Mac’s display resolution controls and try the external display’s native or default resolution. Apple says a native resolution may look sharper than a scaled one. The exact controls vary with the Mac, display and adapter. See Apple’s guidance for an external display that is dark or low resolution.

2. Adjust scaling separately from resolution
Resolution determines the display mode; scaling changes the size of text, apps and other interface elements. If the image is sharp but everything is too small or too large, adjust Scale in Windows under Settings > System > Display rather than lowering the resolution just to resize the interface.
A non-native resolution may require the display to interpolate pixels, which can soften or distort the image. How a lower-resolution picture is fitted to the screen can also vary: it may be centered, stretched, or stretched while preserving its aspect ratio. Stretching can look distorted; preserving the aspect ratio can leave black bands. Microsoft Learn describes these desktop image-scaling behaviors.

3. Check the cable, adapter and port
If the correct resolution does not solve the problem, inspect the connection. A cable or adapter that cannot support the display’s required resolution and refresh rate can cause an external display to fall back to a lower mode. Apple recommends checking those capabilities when an external display is low resolution or blurry. Make sure the computer and monitor ports, cable and any adapter all support the mode you intend to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Reseat the video cable at both the computer and monitor.
- If the issue remains, test with a known-good cable compatible with both devices and the required resolution and refresh rate.
- Try a different video output on the computer or a different supported input on the monitor, if available.
- If possible, connect the monitor to another computer, or test the computer with another display.
These are diagnostic tests: if a replacement cable works, the original may be faulty or unsuitable for the mode. If the issue follows the monitor across cables and sources, that points away from the original computer connection; if it follows the computer, investigate its output or settings. For example, a compatible HDMI cable is worth considering only after checking the ports and required display mode. A new cable will not correct a resolution or scaling setting by itself. Microsoft’s Windows external-monitor troubleshooting guidance includes connection, port and alternate-system checks.

4. Check Windows updates and display drivers
Driver steps come after the basic resolution and connection checks. If the expected resolution is unavailable or changed unexpectedly, check Windows Update and the display driver. If the problem started after a driver update, Microsoft documents rolling the display driver back; reinstalling it is another option if earlier steps do not help. These steps apply to Windows and should be handled through the Windows device and update controls described in Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance.
5. Decide what to test if the image is still blurry
If desktop text and interface elements are broadly soft, revisit resolution and scaling first. When the selected mode is right, use cable, port and alternate-device tests to narrow down whether the issue follows the monitor, connection or computer. Those checks do not prove a panel defect: no single visual test reliably separates a monitor-panel problem from a graphics or signal issue in every setup. If the blur persists, consult the monitor maker’s support page for the specific model.
