If your Pixel Watch will not pair, stay connected, or update its apps, start with the reversible checks: charge both devices, install current software, turn on Bluetooth, location, Wi‑Fi, and phone internet, allow the Pixel Watch app to use nearby devices, and keep the watch within 0.5 m (1.6 ft) of the phone. Then retry setup and verify that the pairing codes match. A watch that is already paired but not syncing needs additional checks for watch internet access, app permissions, and the Google account used by the Pixel Watch app.
Do not factory-reset immediately. A reset removes every app, setting, and piece of data on the watch. If you are moving to a new phone and the watch runs Wear OS 4, use Google’s Transfer watch process first; it is designed to preserve the existing setup.
First identify which connection problem you have
The correct fix depends on what you see in the Pixel Watch app and on the watch.

Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 connect to Android phones according to Google’s connection guidance. If your phone is not a compatible Android device, the normal Bluetooth troubleshooting steps will not make the watch pair.

Use the message and the timing to choose a path. A watch that cannot be discovered needs proximity, Bluetooth, location, permission, and setup checks. A watch that is listed as connected but has stale apps or accounts needs internet, app, permission, and account checks. A replacement phone needs the transfer procedure when available, while a phone reset can trigger a separate backup-and-repair path.
Fix initial pairing in the safest order
1. Charge the watch and phone
Put the watch on its charger and give the phone enough charge to complete setup. A low battery can interrupt discovery, updates, or the transfer of account information. Leave both devices powered on while you work. Keep the watch on the charger if an update or setup stage takes several minutes, but keep it close enough to the phone for the pairing prompt.
2. Update all three software components
Install available updates for the phone’s Android software, the Pixel Watch firmware, and the Pixel Watch app. Setup can fail when the phone app and watch firmware are on incompatible releases. Open the Pixel Watch app and complete any update it offers before attempting another pairing. If the watch is already connected far enough to reach its settings, install its firmware update there as well.
Update the phone first if it offers a pending system update, then update the Pixel Watch app, and finally apply any watch update that can be reached. Restarting setup while an update is waiting can leave you troubleshooting an old software state. After each update, wait for the device to finish rebooting before trying to pair again.
3. Turn on the required phone connections
On the phone, enable Bluetooth and Location. Turn on Wi‑Fi and verify that the phone can open a webpage or use another internet-connected app. Bluetooth discovers the watch, while location and nearby-device access allow Android and the Pixel Watch app to complete the setup process.
Check the Pixel Watch app’s permissions in Android settings and allow its access to nearby devices. Android’s wording and menu placement can vary by phone manufacturer and software version, so use the app’s permission screen rather than assuming Bluetooth permission was granted automatically. If Android presents a separate location or nearby-devices prompt during setup, accept it for this pairing attempt.
Keep the phone’s internet connection active even when Bluetooth discovery appears to work. Setup may still need online access to retrieve account information, updates, or watch services. If the phone cannot load a webpage, fix that connection before repeating the watch setup.
4. Put the devices close together
For Fast Pair, Google specifies a maximum distance of 0.5 m (1.6 ft) between the phone and watch. Place them next to each other, remove unnecessary distance created by a bag or another room, and keep the screen on while the pairing prompt is visible. Do not leave the watch across the room while waiting for the notification, even if Bluetooth normally reaches farther.

5. Start setup with Fast Pair or the app
With Bluetooth enabled and the watch nearby, wait for the Android Fast Pair notification. If it appears, open it and follow the setup screens. If no notification appears, open the Pixel Watch app and choose its option to add or set up a watch. Keep only the intended watch close by while doing this, especially if another wearable is powered on nearby.
When the phone and watch display pairing codes, compare every digit before accepting. Confirm only when the codes match on both screens. A mismatched code means that the phone has found a different nearby device or that the earlier request has expired; cancel the prompt, move the devices together, and start setup again. Do not accept a code simply because the watch name looks familiar.
6. If setup freezes, restart the watch
A frozen setup screen does not require a reset as the first response. On the watch, hold the crown for three seconds, scroll to Restart, and select it. Wait until the watch finishes booting, keep it beside the phone, and retry setup from the Pixel Watch app. Give the restart time to complete rather than pressing the crown repeatedly or starting several pairing requests at once.

What to do for “Can’t pair” or “Can’t find your watch”
These messages usually mean the phone is not completing discovery rather than that the watch has lost its data. Work through the following checks once, in order:
- Confirm that Bluetooth and Location are on and that the phone has internet access.
- Verify that the Pixel Watch app is current and has nearby-device permission.
- Keep the watch within 0.5 m (1.6 ft) and leave both screens awake.
- Restart the watch using the crown procedure above, then reopen the Pixel Watch app.
- Accept Fast Pair if Android offers it; otherwise begin setup manually in the app.
- Compare the pairing codes on both screens before confirming.
If another watch or Bluetooth accessory is being paired nearby, move it away temporarily so the phone does not present the wrong device or pairing request. Do not accept a code until it matches on the watch and phone. If the notification disappears, return to the Pixel Watch app and generate a new setup request instead of trying to reuse an old prompt.
These steps are deliberately reversible. They do not erase a watch that has not completed setup, and they preserve the option of using Google’s transfer flow if this is actually a new-phone move.
When the watch pairs but does not sync
A Bluetooth pairing can remain intact while app data and account information stop updating. Treat this as a sync problem, not as proof that the watch must be erased. First determine whether everything is stale or only one app is affected; a single-app problem can point to that app’s account requirements rather than a broken watch connection.

Update the Pixel Watch app
Install the latest Pixel Watch app version on the phone. An outdated app can leave a watch connected while failing to deliver app updates or account changes. Reopen the app after updating and let it remain connected while you check the watch’s status.

Give the watch an internet route
Check that the watch can reach the internet through its available connection. Bluetooth alone does not supply every service needed for account and app synchronization. Keep the phone online during troubleshooting and connect the watch to a supported Wi‑Fi network when required. If the phone is offline, restore phone internet before judging whether the watch itself is syncing.
Review app permissions
Open the phone’s Android settings for the Pixel Watch app and confirm that the permissions it requests are allowed, including nearby-device access. A denied permission can block synchronization even though the watch is listed as paired. Permission names and locations differ across Android versions, so search the phone’s app-permission settings for Pixel Watch if the menu is not in the same place shown in a guide.
Check the Google account in the Pixel Watch app
In the Pixel Watch app, open Settings → Google → Accounts and add or select the Google account that should be used on the watch. If the wrong account is active, information may appear to be missing even though the connection itself works. Confirm the account before removing or resetting anything.

A limitation affecting one app is not evidence that the entire watch needs to be unpaired.
Fix Wi‑Fi-related connection errors
Pixel Watch Wi‑Fi automatically connects to networks saved on the phone when Wi‑Fi is enabled on the watch. It does not provide a general way to sign in to every public hotspot. When diagnosing sync, test the watch on a network the phone already knows and can reach rather than repeatedly selecting an unfamiliar public network.
Networks the watch cannot use
- Captive-portal networks: hotel, coffee-shop, airport, and similar networks that require a web page or terms-of-service screen before internet access.
- 5 GHz networks: Google’s guidance says the watch cannot connect to 5 GHz Wi‑Fi.
A network can appear available to the phone and still be unsuitable for the watch. The sign-in page used by a captive portal cannot be completed through the watch’s automatic saved-network process, and a 5 GHz-only network will not provide a workaround through repeated pairing attempts.
Test with a supported saved network
Turn on Wi‑Fi on the watch, make sure the phone is connected to a saved compatible network, and confirm that the phone itself has internet access. If the current network uses a captive portal or 5 GHz only, try another supported saved network instead of repeatedly retrying the same one. A successful connection on the alternate network identifies the original Wi‑Fi as the limiting factor.
Move the watch to a new phone without erasing it first
If the old phone still works and the watch runs Wear OS 4, use the transfer flow before considering a factory reset. Google’s process keeps the old-phone connection in place until the transfer succeeds, so do not remove the old phone’s watch connection at the start.

- On the watch, open Settings → System → Transfer watch. You can also start from the old phone by opening the Pixel Watch app and choosing System → Transfer watch.
- Follow the transfer instructions shown on the old phone and watch.
- On the new phone, open the Pixel Watch app and add the watch.
- Compare the code shown on both devices and confirm only when it matches.
Keep both phones and the watch available during the transfer, with the watch close to the phone that is displaying the current step. Avoid opening a separate pairing flow on the new phone until the transfer instructions tell you to add the watch.
After the transfer, watch faces may take a while to synchronize. Do not interpret a delayed face list immediately after a successful transfer as proof that the move failed; allow the watch and new phone time to finish their synchronization. Check the connection again after the transfer has completed rather than interrupting it to reset the watch.
If the watch does not run Wear OS 4, the documented transfer flow may not be available. In that situation, check the Pixel Watch app’s current instructions for your software version before choosing an erase-and-pair procedure.

Handle “Can’t connect” after a phone reset
A previously paired watch can need a different recovery when the phone itself has been reset. Google documents a targeted path for this situation: back up the watch if the available tools allow it, factory-reset the watch, and pair it again. During the new setup, you can choose to restore the available backup.
This exception applies to the post-phone-reset or previously paired-phone scenario; it is not the first fix for every initial pairing failure. Complete the charge, software, Bluetooth, location, permission, proximity, internet, and restart checks first unless the phone reset is the event that broke the connection. If the old phone is still usable, consider transfer instead of treating the situation as an ordinary first pairing.
Factory-reset only after the reversible steps fail
A reset removes the watch’s local setup and requires pairing again. Google Pixel Watch Help states: “When you factory reset your watch, all your apps, settings, and data are erased.” Make sure you understand the backup implications before proceeding. A reset is a recovery step, not a way to test whether Bluetooth is enabled or whether the phone app has the right permission.
Reset from the watch
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Choose Disconnect & reset.
- Confirm the on-screen warnings and allow the watch to complete the erase.
Reset from the Pixel Watch app
- Open the Pixel Watch app on the phone.
- Go to System → Reset and unpair watch.
- Confirm the reset and wait for the watch to return to its setup state.
After the reset, charge the watch, keep it close to the phone, enable Bluetooth and Location, allow nearby-device access, and run setup again. The reset does not remove the need for compatible software or a supported internet connection. You will also need to accept a new matching code during setup.

- Uninstall the Pixel Watch app from the phone.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth or connected-device settings and forget every listed entry for the affected watch.
- Restart the phone.
- Install the Pixel Watch app again, enable Bluetooth and Location, grant nearby-device access, and retry setup with the watch beside the phone.
Forget entries for the affected watch rather than unrelated accessories. The purpose is to remove stale records before generating a fresh setup request. Do not repeatedly accept stale pairing prompts. Start a fresh setup request after the phone has restarted so the code comparison is generated for the current session.
If the watch cannot complete the documented reset or remains unusable after the cleanup sequence, Google’s advanced guidance includes a Fastboot reset and contacting support. Those steps can be device-specific and may erase remaining data, so use them as escalation rather than as opening instructions.
A quick decision guide
- Never paired: use the initial-pairing sequence, with special attention to compatibility, charge, software versions, Bluetooth, Location, nearby permission, internet, proximity, and matching codes.
- Paired but apps or accounts are stale: update the Pixel Watch app, verify watch internet access and permissions, then check the account under Settings → Google → Accounts.
- Moving to a new phone: if the watch has Wear OS 4, use Transfer watch before erasing it.
- Phone was reset and the watch now says “Can’t connect”: follow the backup, reset, and re-pair path documented for that case.
- Every ordinary step failed: reset only after considering data loss, then use the uninstall, forget, restart, and retry sequence if setup remains blocked.
