A monitor black screen can mean the display has no power, is set to the wrong input, is not receiving a usable signal, or is showing a Windows display problem. Check the monitor’s power light and on-screen menu first, then test the input and cable before changing Windows settings or replacing hardware.

First, determine whether the monitor has power

Check that the monitor’s power cable is firmly connected to the display and a working outlet, then turn it on. Observe the power indicator, but do not assume its meaning: indicator colors and blink patterns vary by model. For example, Dell’s troubleshooting guidance uses the LED to help distinguish a monitor with no power from one that is powered but not receiving a signal. Check your monitor’s manual for the meaning of its indicator.

Try opening the monitor’s own on-screen menu using its physical controls. If the menu appears, the monitor has enough power to display an image; that does not confirm that it is receiving a usable picture from the computer. Continue with the signal checks below.

Check the selected input and the video connection

  1. Select the connected input. Use the monitor’s input control to choose the port connected to the computer, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, DVI, or VGA. The exact menu label depends on the monitor.
  2. Reseat the video cable. Disconnect and firmly reconnect it at both the monitor and computer. Look for visible damage on accessible connectors.
  3. Check which computer port you used. If the computer has a separate graphics card, connect the monitor to an output on that card rather than an unintended or inactive motherboard video port.
  4. Remove accessories for a basic test. Temporarily disconnect docks, adapters, splitters, and similar devices, then connect the monitor directly to the computer if possible. Try another output port if one is available.

These checks address the signal path. A monitor that displays its menu but not the computer’s picture may still be working correctly; the input, cable, adapter, computer output, or software configuration could be responsible.

Isolate the monitor, cable, and computer

Swap one component at a time when possible. Use a known-good compatible cable, connect the monitor to another computer, or connect the original computer to another display. These tests help show whether the problem follows the monitor, cable, or computer, but no single result guarantees that a particular part has failed.

  • If another display works with the computer, investigate the original monitor, its selected input, and the cable used with it.
  • If the original monitor works with another computer, investigate the original computer’s output, display configuration, or software.
  • If a different cable restores the picture, the original cable or its connection was likely involved.

Follow the monitor manual’s built-in self-test procedure if it has one. A replacement cable is only a useful diagnostic option when the cable is a plausible cause; match its connectors and capabilities to both devices.

If Windows is running, check display mode and graphics drivers

These steps apply when the monitor has power and the symptoms suggest that Windows is running but its picture is not appearing on the intended display. Microsoft notes that blank screens can occur at startup, after sign-in, or after an update, and the useful next step depends on what is visible.

Check Windows’ display output

On Windows 10 or 11, press Windows+P to open the projection options, then inspect or cycle the display modes. If the computer is connected to multiple displays, the selected mode may be sending the picture somewhere else.

Reset the graphics driver and restart

Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or brief screen flicker may indicate that the reset occurred. Restart the computer if the picture does not return.

Use the visible symptoms to choose the next step

  • Black screen with a cursor: A stalled Windows process or driver may be involved. If Task Manager opens, Microsoft suggests restarting Windows Explorer.
  • Black screen after sign-in: Display-output configuration or a user profile can be involved; the symptom alone does not identify which.
  • Blinking cursor before Windows loads: Microsoft notes that this can indicate that UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device. This is different from a monitor that simply has no video signal.
  • Problem began after a display-driver update: In Device Manager, use the driver rollback option if it is available, or reinstall/update the driver according to the computer or graphics-device maker’s instructions.

If normal startup remains unusable, Microsoft describes using the Windows recovery environment and Safe Mode for further troubleshooting. Recovery steps depend on the computer and Windows configuration; do not treat BIOS updates or repeated forced-shutdown cycles as routine first fixes.

Know when to seek monitor or computer support

If the monitor has no power after checking its connection and outlet, or if its own menu and the manufacturer’s self-test do not work as described in the manual, use the monitor maker’s support or warranty channel. If the monitor works with another computer but the original computer does not produce a picture on any display, contact the computer or graphics-device maker. Warranty coverage and service options vary by model and region.

Microsoft describes the symptom broadly: “A blank screen, often referred to as a ‘black screen’ due to its appearance, can occur in Windows for several reasons.” The practical distinction is whether the monitor lacks power, lacks a usable input signal, or has a picture problem originating in Windows; each calls for a different next step.
