When a Mac utility stops launching, quits, freezes, or loses a feature after a macOS upgrade, work through the least-destructive checks first: document the exact failure, quit and reopen the utility, restart the Mac, install compatible app and macOS updates, then check app architecture, helper components, and security prompts. Reinstall only after checking whether the utility stores data locally. If it still fails, give the developer your versions, Mac processor type, exact error, and the steps you tried.
Record exactly what stopped working
Do not begin by deleting the utility. First write down what you can observe while the evidence is still clear. A utility that never opens has a different diagnostic path from one that opens and then freezes, and both differ from an app whose main window works but whose menu item or background helper does not.

Also record the utility’s name and version, your macOS version, the Mac model or processor type, when the problem began, and the complete wording of any warning. Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance recommends supplying this kind of information when further help from the developer is needed (Apple Support).

Follow the low-risk recovery sequence
Apple’s general order for an app that stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or will not open starts with simple, reversible actions and moves toward reinstalling only when necessary (If an app on your Mac stops responding, closes unexpectedly or won’t open). Perform the steps in order, testing the utility after each meaningful change.
1. Quit the utility completely and reopen it
If a window is still visible, choose the utility’s Quit command from its menu. If it is frozen, use the Apple menu’s Force Quit command, select the utility, and choose Force Quit. Wait a few seconds, then launch it again from Applications, Launchpad, or its normal shortcut.
A successful relaunch tells you that the immediate process had become stuck; it does not prove that the underlying post-update problem is fixed. If the utility fails in the same way, continue rather than repeatedly force-quitting it. Repeated force quits can also make it harder to identify the file, device, or action that triggers the failure.
2. Restart the Mac
Save work in other applications and choose Apple menu > Restart. A restart reloads macOS services and the utility’s launch environment without changing the app’s files. Test the utility as soon as you sign back in, before opening a large number of other programs.
If the utility works after restarting but fails again later, note what you did between the successful launch and the next failure. That timing is useful to the developer, particularly if a background helper, extension, or connected device is involved. A restart is also a useful checkpoint: if the utility fails immediately after a clean sign-in, a startup helper or incompatible component deserves more attention than a temporary busy process.
3. Install the utility’s update from the correct source
For an App Store utility, open the App Store and check its Updates area. For software obtained directly from a publisher, use the utility’s built-in updater or the publisher’s genuine official download page. Do not use a random download mirror to replace a damaged or incompatible copy.
Read the release notes when they are available. The version needs to support your installed macOS release, not merely be newer than the copy on your Mac. Look for wording about supported macOS versions, Apple silicon, Intel compatibility, system extensions, or migration after an operating-system upgrade. If the utility has separate plug-ins, extensions, drivers, menu-bar helpers, or an updater service, check for updates to those components with their publishers too.
Keep track of which version you installed and whether the update changed the symptom. “It now opens but the device is not detected” is useful evidence, while “it still does not work” leaves the developer with little to test. If the publisher offers both a stable and a beta build, use the supported stable release unless the publisher specifically directs you to another build.

4. Check for a macOS update
Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update and install an offered update if your Mac supports it. On an older macOS release, the label or location can differ, so use the Software Update control shown by your system. Keep the Mac connected to power during a major installation and allow it to restart fully before testing the utility.
An available macOS update may contain a compatibility correction, but installing one is not a guarantee that every older utility will work. If the utility publisher has identified a particular supported macOS version, follow that compatibility statement rather than assuming the newest release is suitable. If you have only just upgraded macOS, record its exact version and build before installing another update so the developer can reproduce the same environment.
Check app architecture and separately installed components
This check is especially important on a Mac with Apple silicon when the utility was originally built for Intel processors. In Finder, select the utility, choose File > Get Info, and inspect the value beside Kind. Apple identifies these relevant categories:

- Application (Intel): an Intel-only build.
- Application (Universal): a build containing Intel and Apple silicon code.
- Application (Apple silicon): a native build for Apple silicon Macs.
Apple recommends replacing an Intel app with a Universal or Apple silicon release for better performance and future compatibility (Using Intel-based apps on a Mac with Apple silicon). Use the Kind value as a fact to give the developer, not as a reason to delete a working Intel app immediately.
The main application is not always the whole utility. A plug-in, system extension, add-on, device driver, menu-bar helper, or updater can remain Intel-only or be built for an older macOS interface. Check each separately installed component with its publisher. Updating only the main application may leave the failing component unchanged. A feature that fails only when a device is connected, for example, may implicate the driver or helper rather than the utility’s main window.
Architecture is only one compatibility question. The publisher may also have to update permissions, system-extension registration, background-item behavior, or a plug-in format for the new macOS release. Ask which components are supported together instead of installing a native main app alongside an obsolete helper.
Do not treat Rosetta as a permanent compatibility plan
On Apple silicon, Rosetta is Apple’s translation technology for running Intel applications. It can allow an Intel utility to open, but it does not convert the utility or its plug-ins into native Apple silicon software. If the publisher offers a Universal or Apple silicon build, ask for that version and verify that its extensions and helpers support your Mac before upgrading further.

If you are deciding whether to upgrade macOS while an essential utility remains Intel-only, ask the developer first. The relevant question is not merely whether the app launches today, but whether its complete set of helpers, extensions, and update tools will continue to be supported on the macOS version you plan to install.
Separate a security warning from an ordinary compatibility failure
A macOS launch block is not automatically evidence that the utility is incompatible. Apple lists several possible reasons an app may not open: you may lack the required privileges, the app may be damaged or incompletely installed, or it may not be registered with an identified developer. Apple also notes that some apps need an update or reinstall after a new macOS version (If you can’t open an app on Mac).
Read the warning before choosing any override. Confirm that you obtained the utility from the publisher’s genuine site or the App Store, that the download is the publisher’s current release, and that the publisher still supports your macOS version. If you cannot establish the source or authenticity, do not proceed just because the utility used to work before the upgrade.

That warning concerns the security decision itself, not the frequency of post-update app failures. Treat “developer cannot be verified,” “app is damaged,” and “you do not have permission” as separate messages. Resolve the source and authenticity question first; do not blindly use an “Open Anyway” option as a generic repair step.
If the publisher confirms that a genuine release requires a security-related approval, follow the publisher’s and Apple’s documented process carefully and understand what you are allowing. If the publisher cannot confirm the download, stop and obtain a fresh copy from its official source. A familiar app name does not make an unofficial installer safe.
Reinstall only after protecting the utility’s data
Apple includes deleting and reinstalling an app among the available remedies, but warns that data stored in the app may be removed when the app is deleted (Apple’s app troubleshooting steps). Before you remove anything:

- Open the utility’s documentation or support page and look for backup, export, sync, or migration instructions.
- Export projects, profiles, presets, license information, or other records if the utility provides an export command.
- Check whether the utility stores information only locally or also synchronizes it through an account or another service.
- Make a separate backup of files you cannot recreate. Do not assume that reinstalling will preserve them.
When you are satisfied that the important data is safe, remove the utility using the publisher’s documented uninstall method when one exists. Otherwise, follow Apple’s normal app-deletion procedure, then download the current release again from the App Store or the same trusted publisher. Avoid third-party mirrors, modified installers, and old copies saved from before the macOS upgrade.

After reinstalling, launch the clean copy before restoring optional plug-ins or importing a large configuration. If the clean app works until a particular extension, profile, or data set is added, that item becomes the next thing to update or report to the publisher. Reinstalling the main app will not necessarily remove separately installed extensions or repair their compatibility, so check the publisher’s complete uninstall and reinstall instructions.
Compare the risk of each action: quitting and restarting are highly reversible and do not intentionally remove data; updating addresses compatibility while preserving the app’s data; checking architecture is diagnostic; reinstalling can replace damaged files but may remove app-stored information. That is why deletion belongs after the backup and export checks, not at the beginning.
Choose the next action by symptom
Use the observed behavior to decide which branch deserves attention after the basic quit, restart, and update checks. These branches do not replace the sequence; they prevent you from applying a high-impact remedy to the wrong problem.

Know when the problem is beyond a generic fix
If the utility still fails after its supported update, the macOS update, a compatibility check, and a carefully prepared reinstall, the cause is likely specific to that utility or one of its components. Apple directs users to contact the app developer for further help when the general steps do not resolve the problem (Apple Support).
Send one concise report rather than a vague statement that the app is “broken.” Include:
- the utility’s exact name and version;
- the macOS version and build, if shown in About This Mac or System Settings;
- the Mac model and whether it uses an Intel processor or Apple silicon;
- the exact warning text, or a description of the crash, freeze, or failed feature;
- the date or macOS upgrade after which the behavior began;
- the Finder Kind value for the main app and any relevant plug-in or helper;
- whether the utility came from the App Store or the publisher’s official site; and
- which steps you completed, including updates, restart, architecture checks, and reinstall.
Include crash logs or screenshots only through the developer’s requested support channel, and redact passwords, license keys, personal documents, and other sensitive information. The developer can then determine whether a build, extension, permission, or data format needs correction instead of sending you through the same generic steps again.
Ask a focused question in the support request: whether your exact app version supports your macOS release, whether a Universal or Apple silicon build exists, whether a helper or plug-in must be updated separately, and how to preserve or migrate local data. Those details make the response more actionable than a request for a generic “fix.”
What a safe stopping point looks like
Stop troubleshooting when the utility launches, performs the feature that originally failed, and continues to work after a normal restart. Keep the symptom record and the working version information in case the problem returns. If the utility remains unusable, do not keep escalating destructive actions: preserve its data, leave security overrides disabled unless the source is verified and the publisher specifically supports the step, and move to developer support with the complete report.
